Our Projects
Low Budget Modular Standardized Solar Laboratories:
The Solar Laboratories projects aims to establish sustainable long lasting partnerships between universities and companies from both EU and Non-EU countries for evaluating solar thermal, PV and PVT collectors in a Low Budget Modular Standardized Solar Laboratory. The solar laboratory will be able to do quality measurements to meet the requirements for performance certification while maintaining a low cost.
What are the main objectives?
1) Create a solar laboratory that will be used for:
a. Research - evaluating and comparing the different types of solar thermal, PV and PVT collectors.
b. Education – the local universities can give practical lectures to students.
c. Industry - evaluate and compare innovative solar collectors for companies.
2) Ensure the long term sustainability of the project by:
a. Creating local competences to manage these labs at each university through courses.
b. Creating an online forum that will help the maintenance of the solar laboratories after building phase.
c. Leaving a tool that the local universities can use to create some level of revenues by certifying collectors, running projects with companies, and by attracting more students and research projects
d. Establishing partnerships between Universities, Institutions and Companies
3) Disseminate solar energy technologies and solar energy knowledge worldwide
Each laboratory unit will consist of nothing more than a simple wall where all the components are mounted. This wall will be inside a box to ensure easy transportation. All components will be pre connected with the exception of the connections to the collectors and the grid, also they will be standardized and pre-calibrated in order to lower the cost of deployment but still maintaining a high level of flexibility in order to be able to evaluate different types of collectors and serve different testing purposes.
How to get there – Main Milestones
1) Find the adequate calls for the financial support of the project (EU grants, National Agencies, University grants, etc)
2) Establish partnerships between universities and companies from EU and Non-EU countries interested in research in solar energy
3) Further improve the existing solar laboratory design taking into account the needs of the local university and industry for each particular case
4) Plan in detail the deployment stages of the project and prepare the solar laboratory unit
5) Install the solar laboratory unit and do training on the laboratory equipment
6) Follow-up: create an online forum for the partners with the objective of supporting ongoing project and divulge new project proposals
This project is open to any universities, institutes and companies that wish to collaborate forthe development of solar energy.
The Maputo University Project, 2011 (Mozambique):
This laboratory is able to measure any type of solar collector and it is equipped with state-of-the-art concentrating solar hybrid (thermal-photovoltaic) solar collectors, as well as, tracking equipment, solar radiation sensors (pyrometers), loggers, IV tracers, flowmeters, etc.Our team has tought a course on the principles of solar energy and collector simulation.
Solar Laboratory in India, 2013 :
In 2013, the Solar Laboratories project has been awarded a planning grant from Tillväxtverket - the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.Three universities in India were visited: Alliance University, IIT Bombay and Amrita University. The goals of this project were: - Establish partnerships between Gävle/Mälardalen/Lund University and the universities in India, based on long term commitment and sustainability, for the construction of a small scale solar laboratory;Test Rig for Thermal and Electrical Efficiency Measurement, 2019 (Gävle):
Before industrializing productions, prototypes are tested under real environment conditions. MG Sustainable offers an integrated solution of thermal and/or electrical efficiency measurements of solar collectors. Each of the modules is produced under a customized design and dimensioning, according to the system output. The Solar Installation allows the user to monitor the electrical and thermal output. This solution provides domestic and industrial energy producers a solution for grid connection. We have delivered a pre-manufactured feed in station for a district heating connected solar thermal field of 536m2 (400kW) is considered. This system includes an adaptive climate based flow control. This system also allows the delivery of heat to the district heating grid, with 1K accuracy on temperature. The installation was done in Ystad, Sweden, and it is operational for three years. The system has dual connection principles with both return/return and return/supply capabilities.Research grade measurement equipment and cloud based logging with 5s interval are vital parts for the system remote features. The designed Rig is capable of working at 16 Bar and 120C. Our team works with 3D Modeling and Rendering softwares to produce virtual images of on-going projects/products. This is a powerful tool for company's both internal and external marketing campaigns. The aesthetics and mechanical behaviour of the product can be evaluated before creating physical prototypes.
This product is used for industrial applications and it can also be integrated in University Educational programs. Students and PhD researchers can benefit from the system's features to learn about fluid dynamics, heat transfer processes and overall equipment standard working conditions.
It also allows users to understand the mechanisms and modes of heat transfer and to identify the corresponding governing fundamental equations. The system can be used in a simplified way to introduce students to heat transfer experimental techniques.
The Test Rig is designed to allow the user to make changes in the system operation conditions:
• Easy Calibration of flow sensors
• Automated Flow Control
• Accurate Collector Inlet Temperature Control
• Online datalogger

On Phase 2, the activities are focused on developing the business concept further into a market-ready product, aligned with the company’s growth strategy. Activities include trials, prototyping, validation, demonstration and testing in real-world conditions, and market replication. If the activity concerns a primarily technological innovation a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6 or above is envisaged.
The proposal must be based on a strategic business plan that was either developed in Phase 1 or by another means.
The proposal must specify the expected outcome for success, as well as the expected impacts on your company in both qualitative and quantitative terms (e.g on turnover, employment, market size, IP management, sales, ROI, or profitability).
IP and ownership issues are very important, and applicants must present convincing evidence or measures to ensure the possibility of commercial exploitation (often known as ‘freedom to operate’).
