Thoughts on the impressive Fuji X-H2S

Most mirrorless cameras aimed at filmmakers are so much alike these days, so does the X-H2S stand out?

The X-H2S assumes flagship status over the X-T4 for both stills and video users. It remains to be seen whether there will be an 8K resolution X-H2R later, for the high resolution stills and video crowd.

I’d love to see progress with the long list of features that matter more than higher numbers on a specs sheet, but the X-H2S floats my boat in many ways. Open Gate Anamorphic. 4K at 120fps. Internal ProRes. It is like a GH6 with a larger sensor (albeit $500 more expensive). Unfortunately there is no internal e-ND filter, and of course no compressed RAW video format for internal recording due to RED’s patent. The ergonomic concept is still rather stills-orientated too.

Let’s take a closer look at the X-H2S’s cinematic abilities.

Surprise, surprise! RED files lawsuit vs Nikon over internal RAW recording on Z9

As has been the case in the past, with everybody (apart seemingly from Canon) RED are flexing their claim to compressed RAW again.

The target this time is Nikon.

With the latest firmware update, the Z9 bravely has not one but two internal RAW codecs. N-RAW and now ProRes-RAW.

It might be unlikely Nikon will be able to continue to offer the internal RAW firmware update, so you can download it here for the time being, should you ever wish to own a Z9 in the future.

New ARRI ALEXA leaks – Dubbed ALEXA 35, 17 stops dynamic range and 4K/120fps

Here it is. The new ALEXA 35. The replacement for the decade old original film industry work horse, ARRI ALEXA.

Expected to be announced on May 31st, the new camera is much smaller and resembles an ALEXA MINI but with brand new 4.6K sensor.

The new ALEXA is also confirmed to have a build in ND filter wheel.

The new sensor isn’t as fast as some of the other options on the market but the interesting part will be the overall image quality, with 17 stops dynamic range promised. The ALEXA 35 will be capable of 4K at 120fps (in 16:9) but only up to 75fps in 4.6K 16:9 and 4.6K open gate mode.

Netflix and the END of the subscription model

When you’re wallowing in self hatred like the UK culture secretary Nadine Dorries, a good way of advocating the destruction of a national broadcaster is to suggest they follow Netflix’s business model.

Help me write a movie – Part 1 – Taking inspiration from Paul Schrader / Taxi Driver

I am taking a break from reviewing cameras. I am getting out of video for now.

As I am sure many of you may have guessed, I am dissatisfied with the latter world to the max. Got to call it like it is. Filmmaking and creativity is what I’m interested in. So for the time being, EOSHD is going to change focus.

EOSHD will now cover movies, with the overall arc being of me writing and directing one myself. Together we can learn together, come up with inspiration and ideas together, from our real life experiences, and by watching great movies, learning how the masters do it.

Secondly, EOSHD will soon be two websites. The second website will be focussed on photography, under my own name (Andrew Reid). I will be revealing my stills work here, with my favourite techniques explained and on show. I have a huge stock of photos from the last 12 years that nobody has seen.

On the film side, Taxi Driver has always been a big inspiration for me and the funny thing is, since I’m now an outsider in the camera industry, hating my job, disappointed with the world around me and alienated from colleagues, I can truly get into the head of De Niro’s character myself! Understand the movie on a deeper level!!

So thank you Peter McKinnon. Thank you Fro Knows Photo. Thank you Philip Bloom’s idiotic followers. You by virtue of being fucking unbearable have led me into a new much more interesting world. A world where I can come up with my own world. My own fascinating characters, ideas and stories. Let’s go. Let’s do this together and learn together, study the masters and discuss the greats.

After all if there’s anything that unites us even more than cameras, it’s movies.
