12:00 pm Vermont Cooperative for Practice Improvement and Innovation, The First Amendment prevents Congress from passing any laws that abridge the freedom of speech. But what does that actually mean? In this presentation, professor Meg Mott considers the history of speech laws in the United States, how states and municipalities have tried to curb offensive speech, and how the Supreme Court has ruled on those efforts. Through a combination of both fiction and non-fiction, this series explores the connection between mob violence and American culture, historically spurred often by racism. 7:00 pm Vermont Humanities Zoom, While some have sheltered themselves from the effects of climate change so far, others are already traumatized by wildfires, droughts, hurricanes, rising seas, and wars over land and water. And for Indigenous groups, climate change follows centuries of world-destroying, identity-rupturing trauma. Gleaning from classical mythology, UVM professor Adrian Ivakhiv suggests three paths for navigating climate-related trauma: those of Chronos (science), of Aion (arts and humanities), and of Kairos (action without guarantee). 6:45 pm Carpenter-Carse Library, Hitchcock famously said “Some films are slices of life; mine are slices of cake.” His career spanned forty years and many film eras. Film expert Rick Winston will discuss the evolution of Hitchcock’s craft, exploring his favorite themes, his relationship with his collaborators, and his wry sense of humor no matter how grisly the subject matter. By drawing on twelve film clips, starting with his 1925 silent The Lodger and continuing through to his Hollywood classics such as Notorious and Rear Window, Winston will illuminate the arc of Hitchcock’s brilliant career.
