links to online petitions, offer discussion forums Free no credit card needed, no trial period Upgrades available to remove ads or get your own domain name We publish over 4000 annual program guides. The first year we devoted half a page in the guide to letting people know that we had our own website with up to date information as well as printable info so there was less need to reach a staff person and potential natural area guests had a lot more freedom to decide what they wanted to do at their leisure. -Kim, Caledon Natural Area, USA I think our members keep coming back because we have a website with lots of interesting information. We keep them updated through mailing lists and we also have three weekly features that change every week. By doing this, we keep them coming back. -Zach, Youth for Change International We put our freewebs website address on all correspondence and emails that we send and also word of mouth promotes it. They keep coming back as we have a page called Latest News and folks visit regularly for updates on our project. -Alison and Val, BabyPack Project, South Africa We were able to advertise our site by putting up flyers and encouraging our current members to view the sight by putting pictures of them on the sight, with their consent of course. We keep our members viewing our sight by making sure to add something new regularly and then asking our members if they have seen it. Freewebs has a nice tool that we call daily facts, the our members really enjoy. -Duduzile, Alpena Youth Volunteer Corps, USA My members either came to the site through the link on the main La Leche League GB website or via a Google search. I also tell all new mums who I make contact with about the website. Each month I email all the mums on my list with a reminder about the next meeting and I always include a link to the website and refer them there for any changes. -Philippa, La Leche League Stourbridge, United Kingdom Be sure there is a contact email address for people to get in touch and answer their questions as quickly as possible. Even though we may be a non-profit organisation customer service is my main priority. -Pamela, Knit4Charities, Australia Have 1 or 2 people only in charge of the site and updates. Too many people can lead to problems. Too few people can leave the site with out dated information. -Kim, Caledon Natural Area, USA -Kim, Caledon Natural Area, USA Our Freewebs site has been a godsend for our charitable project THE BABY PACK PROJECT and our numbers of supporters has steadily grown as a result. -Alison and Val, BabyPack Project, South Africa My organization does not have an office (it's based online) so we NEED to have a decent website. Freewebs has given us the tools we need to get youth involved in making a difference. -Zach, Youth for Change International Our website allows us to not only gain new members, but allows current members to be in touch with what is going on as far as the schedule etc. It also provides the opportunity for our old members to keep in touch and share stories about how YVC has positively influenced their lives. -Duduzile, Alpena Youth Volunteer Corps, USA The website helps the group because mothers can find us via an Internet search, and keep in touch with any meeting changes via the notice board. -Philippa, La Leche League Stourbridge, United Kingdom Our freewebs site is essential to the promotion of our group. I have been able to put links back to it from several other websites who promote groups like mine. Without it I would not have had an outlet to sell my book which raises money to help my members postage costs. -Pamela, Knit4Charities, Australia Since Caledon Natural Area is part of Virginia State Parks, Caledon's information is available via the state parks website but the staff of Caledon does not have the freedom to monitor or change the information available to the public via the state site. With the freewebs site, we have access anytime to make changes and updates whenever necessary. -Kim, Caledon Natural Area, USA The site managers area is very user friendly as well. I had absolutely no previous training in developing a website and I have managed to take care of the site on my own and have made it pretty informational just through using what was available to me through freewebs -Kim, Caledon Natural Area, USA I love my freewebs site because it is so easy for me to use Freewebs site builder is very user-friendly. I know absolutely nothing about this but have had no problems building a site that I am quite proud of and that gets lots of compliments. Build a site, spread the word, improve things as you go along -- you will think of new ways of doing things as you go, dont be afraid to change. Dont build it and forget it -- work on it as often as you can! -Pamela, Knit4Charities, Australia My 11 year old daughter showed me how to use the template and edit the site and before that my 13 year old son introduced me to it and set up my Freewebs account! So any other non-profit groups should find it quite easy to set up. -Philippa, La Leche League Stourbridge, United Kingdom With the shortage of funds that most non-profits have, freewebs is a great way to be able to appeal to the Internet community without breaking the bank. -Kim, Caledon Natural Area, USA Go ahead. You have nothing to lose and it costs nothing to create a freewebs website. Of all the free ones on offer this one was the most straightforward and the easiest to complete and update. Make sure that the site is easy to navigate, and to be sure to add lots of pictures. Keep the website simple and fun. -Duduzile, Alpena Youth Volunteer Corps, USA The essential details for any website are 1. Information as to what your organisation do, how it started etc 2. How readers can help you 3. Your Contact details 4. Regularly updated News page 5. where possible put photos on the site. -Alison and Val, BabyPack Project, South Africa 3. Most important -- keep your website up to date! 1. Keep it simple - non-profit groups do not need all the bells and whistles like music, games etc. 2. Explain what you are doing in easy to read terms, dont make it too long and drawn out. Include a Comments page for readers to have their say. Give links to other sites of similar interest. Make it interesting without going over the top. -Pamela, Knit4Charities, Australia My top tips would be to keep the site simple but attractive with lots of pictures, the freewebs template of the baby's feet is very eye-catching. When deciding content - imagine yourself finding the site for the first time, what information are you looking for? Break it down as much as possible using different pages and headings! It's important to update the site regularly and keep contact details up to date. -Philippa, La Leche League Stourbridge, United Kingdom Start small and upgrade as more people learn about the organization and website. There really isn't a need to spend a lot of money hiring someone to develop a site. Save some of the funds and do it yourself until you just get so busy that you can't anymore. -Kim, Caledon Natural Area, USA
