On a whim, only three months after I officially closed Goodwin, I announced Duende. It felt like a very natural and smooth transition to begin sharing my finds, and I have found so much fulfillment in it. For as long as I can remember, I've scoured estate sales, flea markets, antique malls and thrift stores for pre-loved pieces for my home. I am often rearranging or coming up with new ideas, so many of my experiments have found a new home with friends. This led me to the idea for Duende—the perfect creative outlet and side project for myself.Duende means a quality of passion and inspiration, which feels like a fitting title for this project.I’ve also read it defined as “the mysterious power of art to deeply move a person.”It’s so fun getting to imagine (and see!) these pre-loved and vintage pieces taking on a new life in other homes. One of the most rewarding things about Duende is knowing these pieces will carry on memories—conversations enjoyed around a dining table, books devoured by an end table, meals shared around a coffee table.It feels good to be mindful about the way I shop, and I often find that the quality is better in vintage pieces, not to mention how much character these storied pieces can add to our spaces. I launch a handful of pieces at a time, and am currentlyonly offering local Nashville pickup or delivery for the larger furniture items (I am happy to ship the smaller items). I’m trying to do my part to reduce waste and am grateful for a brand that values and encourages this. LISTENINGTara Brach podcasts, my Certain Songs for Uncertain Times mixtape my husband and I made last month, this crazy remix by SAINt JHN that I blast and dance around my house to daily, and meditations from the Calm app (I also love their bedtime stories). COOKINGSmitten Kitchen’s takeout-style sesame noodles with cucumber. Perfect for a warm day on the back porch. This basic scone recipe is buttery and delightful—I add some blueberries and lemon zest.
