Indeed. Although singing The Song That Doesn t End off key for over 24 hours, might be considered cruel and unusual punishment.I am a bit torn there...1. if that is the case - I would not wish to support that2. and you need the money for yourself and medicineon the other hand 1. it could bring new readersBy the way: did you see the news on TWC (https://www.topwebcomics.com/news/212)? you now have to confirm that the comic is active once a month... Definitely. I think Cent is rather intrigued. Personally; I d add finger nails on a chalkboard, the old fashioned slate kind, as well.Muahhaha Top Webcomic, how many new readers do you get from them ?Does it make sense to throw money at them ?As for the confirm activity, I think that s actually a good idea, there is a LOT of inactive comics on that list, in fact, here s a quick test - If you go and vote, you have to click on a name decided by a thumbnail from a webcomic, if you are not logged in.After you vote, it shows the vote incentive, and underneath that, will be a link to the webcomic that they used a thumbnail of - If you go visit that comic, most likely you will end up at a dead link. And I m talking about 70-80% of them don t exist anymore. The list needs some cleaning up, that s for sure. I noticed that, same as if something looks interesting and you click on its banner in the list, half the time those are dead links too, even for some in the top 100 o.OMaybe the comic changed hosts and never updated it s link, but it gets me wondering if some of them aren t created in house to pad the list and they never were more than a banner ad, a lot of them seem to be done by the same artist... An interesting, twisted New Rome take on Scharff. From Wikipedia he really was their best and only friend. After a prisoner s fear had been allayed, Scharff continued to act as a good friend, including sharing jokes, homemade food items, and occasionally alcoholic beverages. He was fluent in English and knowledgeable about British customs and some American ones, which helped him to gain the trust and friendship of many of his prisoners. In addition, he could empathize with the captured Allied aviators, drawing on the fact that he was not only married to an Englishwoman but also a son-in-law of a World War I British fighter ace (Claude Stokes, as noted above). Some high-profile prisoners were treated to outings to German airfields (one POW was even allowed to take a Bf 109 fighter for a trial run), tea with German fighter aces, swimming pool excursions, and luncheons, among other things. Prisoners were treated well, medically speaking, at the nearby Hohe Mark Hospital, and some POWs were occasionally allowed to visit their comrades at this hospital for company s sake, as well as the better meals provided there. Scharff was best known for taking his prisoners on strolls through the nearby woods, first having them swear an oath of honor that they would not attempt to escape during their walk. He chose not to use these nature walks as a time to directly ask his prisoners obvious military-related questions but instead relied on the POWs desire to speak to anyone outside of isolated captivity about informal, generalized topics. Prisoners often volunteered information the Luftwaffe had instructed Scharff to acquire, frequently without realizing they had done so. On TWC, I don t like their attitude (if it is true). I used it to find you, years ago, but no longer use it (new phase of life, now looking out for new web serials rather than new comics). So... unless you paid for ads, it does seem that they just made their ads more effective at getting people to vote rather than blocked people from reaching the top 50 without buying ads First things first. @Centcomm, for what it s worth, I didn t find my way here from TWC. I got here from reading Luna Star, which was suggested to me years ago by an ad on another page by Project Wonderful. I don t know how many readers here got her by the TWC ranking. Long story short, I don t know what the TWC ranking means to you. If it can increase your readership, and, by extension, your income, it might be worthwhile. To me personally, it doesn t matter; I d read DC anyway, because it s good. By comparison, I don t read any of the ones currently in the top slots. I ve never even heard of most of them. The Cassians, and Samanta in particular apparently know the difference between being aware of Scharff s techniques, and knowing how to use them. I did find you on TWC and was intrigued, but at the time, you were not in the top 100 yet.Does that help? I think I found DC through TWC rankings, but I also dug way past the top 50 looking for stuff that looked interesting. I m sure you were near the top at the time. I probably went down through the top 100.I don t know if the rate of return would justify the expense of advertising on TWC, I don t even know how you would measure it.I do wish DC had more Patreon supporters. More readers would be great, but more supporters would be even better. My primary reason for being a patron is to help keep the DC going, but more incentive activity would probably drive subscriptions. The other comics I support through Patreon which seem to be the most successful are really active with their incentives. Activity on Pateron might do more good than TWC advertising, but I totally understand how much work goes into the art. I don t know how much investment in effort it takes before one reaches the critical mass to make it all pay off. Of all the top ten comics on TWC, I read only two .. Grrl Power and Stand Still, Stay Silent.I have never even heard of the Epic Escape comic that is listed as #1. I m going for the get bent option. I honestly don t think it benefits you at all. I ignore the rankings myself and also found you thru Luna Star. As for the interrogation, I suggest Baby Shark :) I m doing polls on a social site about all time annoying earwigs, so, the following 3 songs are submitted for your consideration!Green AcresMy Ding-a-lingWake me up (before you go-go)Any one of these will get you results... (we will not name the song that may not be named... based on a ride at disneyland. that one IS cruel and unusual punishment) be very, very careful..most of the songs I inflict on the poor, suffering readership started out as earworms I had to get rid of... voting has been so flawed at twc for so long that I no longer look really hard where a comic is on the list, and look at if the comic premise is interesting and how many and when was the last update. That should be the real criteria not this votes BS, but then they can t pay their own webhost fees. This is a fairly obvious money grab but I m doubtful it will be effective if more creators advertise this malarkey. Without Active creators, TWC doesn t have a resource. Many high-ish comics have dedicated followers of their current series who also vote to the older version. This. I m pretty sure I found this comic from TWC, but I ve spent a lot more time looking at comics in the 101-1000 range than I ve spent looking at the 1-100 range. @Centcomm: well. On one side I d like to suggest you d tell them where to stuff it.On the other hand ... without Top Web Comics I probably never would ve found your site ... they finally put me to the point that I stopped voting entirely...except for the ones that put up new vote incentives on a regular basis and just to see those ;)I don t know what they re trying to do but it s not going to do them as much good as they think it will.It s said you catch more flies with honey than vinegar but the little vinegar flies we get swarming around here prefer that so another old adage bites the dust ;)Singing that song off-key while very slowly pulling fingernails out might do the trick in less than 26 hours ;) I still keep voting. I vote for comics with merit, not incentives. The comic is the incentive. Basically, my voting pattern has not changed. ;) DC is on my list. and if you re going to tell them to stuff it, tell them to stuff it sideways...with rotation It seems to me that Scharff had the very real mailed fist of the Gestapo with which to threaten his prisoners. What mailed fist does Centcomm have in New Troy that would invoke that fear in a prisoner? At least Samanta could imply that her sisters would employ more...percussive...techniques...TWC just went on my shit list. I say follow the money, and try to find out the REAL reason for this crap.On the one hand, if your revenue from TWC is higher than the new fees, then it may be a good idea to pay;On the other hand, if a site institutes a payola-driven ranking system, that site may be in pretty dire straits; On the gripping hand, you have your own medical, rehabilitation, and prescription bills to pay - which I feel is MUCH more important than a corrupt ranking system: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PayolaPM incoming. I can t remember where I first found DC but I know it was long before I was even aware of TopWeb, I think I found both that and Comic Fury from the links here.I m pretty sure it was a link on another comic s page but darned if I know which one, it was just after DC first started and then I lost the link for quite awhile when I forgot to save my bookmarks and firefox erased all the new ones during an update, DC included.Found it again when it was referenced on yet another comic s comments and read quietly until I found out I could comment too.If topweb is bringing you a net profit then stay there, or stay anyway and take what exposure you get for free , you do what s best for you, just don t follow the new trend of posting a few interesting pages then saying you have to pay me on patreon to see the rest .I m pretty sure that would lose you readers, I know I ve stopped reading a lot of comics lately that I liked. oh Samanta, that is just Evil... And I see Marcus wheels turning as to how he can use this technique at some point. And while I have no doubt that it would break even the strongest, there is always the fact that there is another Cassian somewhere with a pair of pliers just waiting for her turn at bat. Got to be in the back of your mind, why are they being so nice to me? and when do they stop and just break out the blowtorches? It would also be hilarious if every once in a while Noctis would just wander past the cell door, peek in, and innocently ask Is it my turn yet? As far as TWC is concerned, personally I would go with the get bent answer. Honestly, it s been forever since I even looked at the sight, and I only vote for comics I already watch, and for the incentives. I just looked, and there are two comics I follow on the first page, and the rest I have never heard of. I often don t notice the author s comments under a comic (sorry), but the community here is so...much that I almost always come back later for the comments.TWC s ad content has exploded over the last couple of years. What I don t know is what has driven that. But let me tell you what I do know...I developed web sites for five years. After that, I was at Google as an SW-SRE for a while (I m looking!) I would be shocked if the AWS bill to support the entire site was more than $100/month. (Although their uptime has been REALLY good...) What s more, a single dev would be bored out of their minds if all they did was maintain the site.Properly managed, the site doesn t need the money. At all.But I ve been hearing increasing complaint from creators about TWC since the start of the year. Something s rotten in Denmark. There has been a lot of garbage with comic site hosting over the years. Now TWC seems to have decided that you don t have to actually host comics to abuse creators. It sounds like it s time for you guys to start boosting some TWC competitor. (A live one--Comic Basement is no longer registered...)I doubt that you are gaining much in the way of readers via TWC. If you don t have the analytics to demonstrate the clicks that you are getting through their ads through their rankings, it s probably worth getting them. When I mwas running an Elizabthan Country Dance troupe, we called The Gilligan s Isle Theme (Title AND ending if needed) The Waiter Summoning Song . We d be in Elizabethan garb at, say, a Red Robin, and they d almost always stick us in a corner and try to forget about us. If water and a server didn t arrive when we d picked what we wanted, we d start singing. Loudly. And Poof , a waiter would arrive. Almost any song in 4/4 can be sung to The /Gilligan s Isle Theme/Waiter Summoning Song...although I haven t tried Baby Shark to TWSS tune yet. On Babylon 5, it was demonstrated that you can sing any Emily Dickinson poem to the yellow rose of texas ) The Gilligan s island theme can also be sung to the tune of Yellow Rose of Texas ...and you re doing it right now ;) Oh. How about the song Bananaphone !? Either version. Or Row, Row, Row Your Boat ? Or A Song That Gets on Everybody s Nerves(sung to Battle Hymn of the Replublic )? I never used TWC to find DC (and Luna Star). I got a recommendation from another author. I still don t use TWC except for voting. Too many people expect things free online. Without enough readers who donate, you don t eat. If you starve, your comic dies. I disapprove of that. You need to be more explicit.I know authors like Patreon, with regular income, not windfalls. I don t Patreonise, for private reasons. However, I do make a good donation to each comic I like - to thank the authors for their work. I repeat this now and then if I follow the comic. Some fans read author comments, but not all. A minority of fans read the comments below. I udually don t. So, occasionally you need a splash page asking for Thanks money. Or a flashing arrow pointing towards Donate and Patreon. (I am a weeee bit sensitive about people who grub money from small business owners) Uh, our comic has never bought ad space on TWC or at The Duck where it s hosted and we seem to be doing okay. Last we looked, we are in the top 50... So are you!Datachasers was at #44 when we came here to read today s page. That s still way down from a long time consistent 5th place at the start of the year when things got wonky in the ratings... Yeah, Datachaser were solidly in top 10 for about a year or so, and then suddenly drops 40 spots or so.Something had changed, for sure. With that last panel alone, I think Samanta would be an absolute delight to know....just as long as I m not the.... houseguest she s entertaining ... I think its safe to say, that one prisoner either lost thier mind or welcomed execution after that Tip of the hat to whoever wrote the dialogue for this page ;)It s almost as if you read our speculations on Noctis et al and their tongue loosening abilities and said... they forgot about Samanta and her sonic powers mwuhahaha...let s drop that in But if it was scripted in advance, that s even better and you know us too well...Granted, some songs do qualify as aural weapons , like the majority of what s currently getting airplay, but I always liked Shari Lewis, RIP, and that song never bothered me.
