Until the end of the year 2007, the Laboratory of Computer andInformation Science (CIS) was one of thelaboratories of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering atthe Helsinki University of Technology.In the organizational revision of the University the departmentstructure was radically changed, and from the beginning of 2008 a newDepartment of Information and ComputerScience (ICS) was established and two former laboratories wereabsorbed into it: the CIS Laboratory, and the Laboratory ofTheoretical Computer Science.The mission of the CIS laboratory was to conduct research and provide education in the area of adaptive informatics.By adaptive informatics we mean a field ofresearch where automated learning algorithms are used to discover therelevant informative concepts, components, and their mutual relationsfrom large amounts of data.Adaptivity enablescomputers to adapt to the needs of individuals, groups, enterprisesand organizations in the changing world. Interfacing with the continuously growing amounts of datain scientific,medical, industrial, and financial fieldsand theirtransformation to intelligible form for the human user is one of our main foci.Techniques that can quicklydiscover and analyze complex patterns and learn from new data will be indispensablefor information-intensiveapplications.The research of the CIS laboratory was conducted within two Centres of Excellence:the Adaptive Informatics Research Centre and thePattern Discovery group of the From Data to Knowledge Research Unit.We offer undergraduate and post-graduate studies on our research fieldswith the goal of educating knowledgeable, skillful and reflectivepractitioners and researchers for the field. Our majors are Computer and Information Science, Bioinformatics and Language Technology.There is information for members and visitors of the labon the local pages,which are accessible only from within the lab.
