Description:

Across the world, researchers are racing to develop a safe vaccine for COVID-19 and, depending on their progress, approval of one or more vaccines could come assoon as the next couple of months or, more likely, into the second quarter of 2021.And then, mass production of vaccine would just begin. As California makes the steady, grim climb toward 20,000 deaths resulting from COVID-19, policy makers andthe leaders offront-linehealth careorganizationsalreadyare turning some of their attention to how we can improve our response when widespread disasters strikein the future. Late Tuesday, the state took an important step towardimprovinghealth care for millions of Californianswhen Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 890, whichallowshighlyqualifiedand certified nurse practitioners(NPs)to provide primary care as they practice to the full extent of their training. If this was a normal year, late September would be a good time to offer a light reminder to the public about getting a flu shot.Doing so helps reduce avoidable strain on hospital emergency departments, helps kids stay in school, parents stay at work, and in the most severe cases, saves lives forpeoplemost susceptible to the virus. But this is 2020.So even something as routine as an annual flu shotremindertakes on heightened importance. On Monday, the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services(CMS)announceditsintent to withdraw a proposal thatwould have cut total Medicaid funding by as much as $49 billionannually (8%of the program). Earlier this week, Governor Newsom shared some encouraging news about California’s COVID-19 positivity rate, whichdropped by 2 percentage points, to 4%,over the past 14 days compared to the two weeks prior. We’re moving in the right direction, but we would be remiss to think we’ve truly turned the corner on this pandemic. Rather, this progress means we must be even more vigilant, to guard against a premature resumption of activities that could set us back months. California’s 120 stateassemblymembersand senators, like the rest of us, have been grappling with the new reality that COVID-19 has wrought. For the legislatorsand those who seek to influence them, it meant doing business very differently as they were pressed for time and consensus-building.It also meant a unique focus on taking action to mitigate COVID-19’s impact on Californians. In a year of global pandemic, one thing we owe toour communities is protect ourselves during flu season. In this spirit, CHA has partnered with dozens of hospitals, associations and agencies to promotetheFightFluTogether campaign. As California’s hospitals continue their life-saving work during the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital associations are grateful for the opportunity to support them. You can bet there will be new labor and employment laws along with updates to existing ones…every year. As the California Hospital Association, it is our job to keep our members current with all of them. Visitation challenges have become increasingly complex as hospitals address access issues and must comply with changing COVID 19-relatedrequirements and guidance. Establishingguidelines to determine who can visit which patientswhile keeping patients and staffsafe can prove challenging. This webinar can help.
