October Book of the Month:Permafrostby SJ NormanPermafrost drew me in and unsettled me in equal measure. I could see parts of myself in the characters, and in the familiarity of the settings, as SJ Norman traces the outline of Australian cities, the expanse of Lake George on the road to Canberra, the experience of being young and queer, or an Australian abroad, or a bookseller in a small, second-hand bookstore. And then, just like that, the prose takes a dark turn and reality seems a less tangible thing. Gothic and haunting, many of these stories are plagued by a sense of loneliness, longing. Unnerved but intrigued, I finished this collection in a day.

One of the most inspiring writers I had read in a long time. Odd and acute, this intriguing collection of short stories consume a sense of Place that has left me feeling... unusually lonely, cold and yet somehow uplifted. It is the strangest of sensations to feel after reading a book. Fulfilled yet at the same time hollow. How can a book make you feel extreme opposites at once? An experience only an extremely skilled writer can achieve!

Each story is lead by a character whos gender is unknown. How much I adored this! The connection to Place is headstrong, taking you from Australia, Poland, London, Berlin. No matter which city, I was there. I was experiencing. I was 100% in. A collection of enigmatic shorties which are lyric, dynamic and the finest Australian writing Ive read in a while. I loved this one so very much. Im still thinking about it weeks later!

In compliance with the NSW government orders, Better Read Than Dead is currently closed for browsing, but there are many ways you can help to support us and find new books to read during lockdown!

If you would like to purchase a book, you can order from our website and collect at the shop when your order is ready. You can also call us on (02) 9557 8700, email us at books@betterread.com.au or message us on social media. We're offering free shipping across Australia over the lockdown period.

Alternatively, you're welcome to come to our door and telephone us with the names of the books you would like (or some hints for a recommendation) and we can grab your books from the shelves and bring them outside to you. We'll need you to sign in with our QR code and, of course, masks must be worn by customers and our booksellers will be doing the same! You can use our mobile POS machine, or you can pass your card to one of our booksellers and we can tap it at the front desk, to make your purchases. There's a sign in front of the shop, with all this information on it. We sincerely appreciate your patience and support as we adjust with government restrictions.
