ASCE Blog: Pioneer of Life-Cycle Cost Analysis Honored with 2016 OPAL for Education http://blogs.asce.org/pioneer-of-life-cycle-cost-analysis-honored-with-2016-opal-for-education/ Lehigh University s Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Engineering Research Center, under the direction of Joseph T. Stuart Professor of Structural Engineering Richard Sause, Ph.D., P.E, is a national center for research and education on structures and materials of the infrastructure. We welcome you to learn more about the Center, including its people, projects, programs, and educational opportunities, and how the Center can be of benefit to you or your organization.Researchers at the University of Arizona are examining steel collectors used in the building industry to help create earthquake-proof structures. Major earthquakes in central Mexico and the Iran-Iraq border last year caused large scale devastation and death, killing about 900 people, and destroying hundreds of buildings that also left many homeless. Working in partnership with Lehigh University and the University of California, San Diego, the Arizona University-led research team is now studying steel collectors, which are reinforcements used in concrete floor slabs, and responsible for horizontally transferring seismic forces. Click Here for Full Article Funding for the FY2018 PITA program has been appropriated by the Commonwealth of PA in its most recent budget, but the award has not yet been released by the funding agency. In anticipation of this funding being released to ATLSS by the Commonwealth in the upcoming months, ATLSS is now soliciting proposals for PITA projects for the FY2018 funding period. These proposals should fit within the 7 Technology Focus Areas listed below, or if outside of these areas, justify as Other with a description of the technology focus area for consideration. Proposals are due by Friday, November 3, 2017. Approval memos for selected projects are targeted to be issued by January 1, 2018, contingent on the funding being released to ATLSS by this timeframe.  Read more... Lehigh University’s Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Engineering Research Center is offering undergraduate research fellowships for Summer 2017. Funding for the program is provided by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Technology Alliance (PITA). The program is a 10-week research experience during which students will work under the direction of faculty advisors and graduate student mentors on an active research project focused within an ATLSS Engineering Research Center focus area. Professional development workshops and offsite engineering-related industrial tours will be included in the program.  ATLSS research areas include Earthquake Engineering, Structural Design and Analysis, Bridge and Building Systems, Finite Element Modeling, Innovative Materials, Sensor Technology, Foundation Engineering, Field Testing, and Blast Resistant Engineering.Click Here for Application Click Here for Flyer Read more... "How do ASCE members encourage policy makers and the engineering community to take the long view rather than focus on the upfront sticker price?" That's a question Dr. Dan M. Frangopol, the Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture, posed to fellow educators and industry leaders in civil engineering at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) annual convention in New York City this fall. It's also a question that's propelled him to the forefront of a critically important area of study and practice within the civil engineering community.  Read more... Lehigh University’s NHERI Experimental Facility will be hosting a 1-day Research Workshop on Monday, November 9th at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.  The objectives of the workshop are:To provide participants information about the NHERI@Lehigh Experimental Facility capabilitiesTo provide the basics of real-time hybrid simulation through lectures and hands-on demonstrationsTo understand how the NHERI@Lehigh Experimental Facility capabilities can enhance your researchTo provide information for preparing NSF proposals which use the NHERI@Lehigh Experimental FacilityPartial travel financial support will be available for on-site participants.  More details, including a registration link and application for the participant financial support, will be available in the near future.  We encourage interested researchers to visit the ATLSS Engineering Research Center (www.atlss.lehigh.edu) for updates on the workshop.  Questions regarding the site workshop can be addressed to Dr. Chad Kusko, Administrative Director, ATLSS Engineering Research Center, Lehigh University at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
