Consulting, Publishing and Training
for Cultural Heritage Professionals About Us

Archives Museum Informatics is a partnership of two respected leaders, researchers, and theorists in museum and cultural informatics: David Bearman and Jennifer Trant.

We are now on an extended sabbatical. We might even be retired.

Consulting

For many years, our consulting services emphasized inter-institutional collaboration, and strategic planning. We've specialized in organizational development, business model design, collaboration, multi-institutional projects, knowledge organization, standards development, and requirements analysis.

We also provided research services. Our international clientele has included archives, museums, libraries, cultural heritage networks, consortia, funders, philanthropists, businesses and governments.

Publications

Publications from Archives Museum Informatics chronicle the development of interactive multimedia in museums and the impact of the Web on museums and libraries. Most are freely available online, embodying our commitment to open access.

Museums and the Web and ICHIM conference papers are catalogued and available online. Many of our own articles and papers are also available online.

Between 1987 and 1996 Archives and Museum Informatics published a quarterly newsletter. These are freely available online as PDF files. See the Index to issues.

Print publications are also available to order.

Conferences

We founded the conferences Museums and the Web and ICHIM on the belief that knowledge and best practices should be openly shared amongst colleagues. These became internationally known venues for information-sharing across a broad range of cultural professions, and attracted a diverse, vibrant group of managers, marketers, new media / technologists, curators, educators, and researchers.

Museums and the Web has been held annual from 1997, and is ongoing under new leadership. See museumsandtheweb.com.

ICHIM was held biennially from 1991 - 2007 and has now ended.

We also hosted several research meetings on Electronic Records.

Online Community

We established an online community of cultural heritage professionals, that has grown to thousands of members. Originally at conference.archimuse.com, and then museumsandtheweb.com, you can now join the conversation at museweb.net

Informatics: The interdisciplinary study of information content, representation, technology, and applications,
and the methods and strategies by which information is used in organizations, networks, cultures, and societies.
