10/23/2020 - AHF Honors the heroes of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution Hungarians from all walks of life rose up against insurmountable odds to fight the brutal Soviet-installed Communist government. Thousands died fighting, tens of thousands were wounded and imprisoned, others - men, women, and children - tortured and executed, while 200,000 fled their homeland, many to the USA.Their enormous sacrifice may have seemed futile then, but today it is universally recognized as having contributed to the ultimate demise of Soviet domination of Central and Eastern Europe and the restoration of constitutional democracy and independence in Hungary and the region.[read more]

6/4/2020 - The 100th Anniversary of the Treaty of Trianon.On June 4, 1920, over one hundred years ago, the Hungarian delegation to the Paris PeaceConference was forced to sign the punishing Treaty of Trianon, arguably the most severe of allthe post-World War I settlements concluded at the conference. Led by the Big Four - theUnited States, Great Britain, France and Italy- those treaties were collectively designed toconclude the First World War and make the "world safe for democracy," according to PresidentWoodrow Wilson.[read more]

4/16/2019 - "It with sadness that the AHF learned of Mr. Laszlo Hamos' death on April 16th. He was an ardent supporter of protecting the collective and human rights of the Hungarians left by the unjust Trianon border changes dictated to Hungary by vengeful victors of WWI, resulting in minority status to Hungarians in the successor countries. These countries to this day treat the Hungarian minority as second class citizens and often engage in what can only be described as "cultural ethnic cleansing".

On January 27, the Kossuth Foundationsponsored and hosted a lecture on a scholarly volume, July 1944: The Deportation of the Jewsin Budapest Foiled. The AHF-supported book relates to the military intervention of ColonelFerenc Koszorus and the First Armored Division under his command in July 1944 that blockedthe deportation to the Nazi German death camps of a quarter of a million Jews living inBudapest. 12/1/2018 - 2018 AHF Advent Program. On December 1st AHF held an extraordinarily moving event about what the Hungarian family really means, about the excitement of children at Christmas, about love, about celebrating Advent, about working together, about remembering our Hungarian heritage and Christmas folk tales and songs. Families of diplomats and from all walks of life and religions celebrated Advent together. There were prayers from the clergy, the lighting of the first advent candle, children and adults singing carols together, and Christmas gifts from a famous Mikulás. This wonderful event brought tears to many of the 95 guests at the Hungarian American Athletic Club in New Jersey. [read more]

11/14/2018 - AHF co-sponsored the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation's Triumph of Liberty Gala Dinner held on November 14th in Washington DC, attended by over 250 persons. The Foundation presented its Truman Reagan Medal awards to those who made significant contributions helping the Victims of Communism. 10/20/2018 - The 1956 Hungarian Revolution Remembrance at the New York Consulate: Five AHF Board members attended this moving ceremony. At the remembrance AHF Co-President Gyula Elemér Balogh, and President of the Amerikaiak a Magyarokért Alapítvány in Hungary received the Order of Merit Officers Cross award signed by the President of the Republic of Hungary. He sadly remembered being 12 years old when the 1956 Revolution took place and being unable to help the Hungarians from the US. This left a lifelong impression on him and he vowed to help Hungary whenever he could. [read more]

09/02/2018 - AHF Successful In Helping Reduce U.S. Interference With Hungary's Media and Other Domestic Policies: AHF's efforts to block a State Department grant of $700,000 to fund media opposition groups in Hungary paid off when it was reported in the New York Times on August 18, 2018, that the funds would not be used in Hungary but instead would be redirected into other State Department programs. The article also discusses an overall change in U.S. diplomatic relations with Hungary urged by AHF that will be more respectful of a strong democratic NATO ally. [read more]

09/13/2017 - Ukraine Language Law: AHF submits letter to US Secretary of State Tillerson regarding the inexplicable decision by Ukraine prohibiting Hungarian children of western Ukraine to study in their mother tongue (as well as in Ukrainian) beyond the 4th grade. That discriminatory law threatens the Hungarian minoritys culture and infringes on fundamental freedoms insofar as the survival of any national minority is to a large extent dependent on its ability to preserve and cultivate its culture, especially its language. 7/14/2017 - On July 7, 2017, AHF Chairman, Frank Koszorus, Jr., met with US Charg d'Affaires, David J. Kostelancik of the United States Embassy in Budapest. The discussion covered a number of issues but focused on steps that could be taken to improve U.S./Hungarian bilateral relations. The meeting followed the Ferenc Koszorus Memorial Day event in Budapest.

6/12/2017 - AHF lays wreath on the 10th Anniversary of the Victims of Communism Memorial. The American Hungarian Federation was proud to participate in the 10th Annual Roll Call of Nations Wreath Laying Ceremony honoring the memory of more than 100 million victims of communist regimes. [read more]

The purpose of the meeting wasto follow up on AHFs November 4, 2015 letter to Ambassador Bell in which AHF suggested that U.S. interests promotion of democracy and human rights, strategic and economic -- may not always be served by public criticisms which are perceived by the man-on-the-street in Hungary, whether a supporter of the government or not, to be demeaning and humiliating. October 21, 2017:

AHF Celebrated 110 years of service to the community with a wonderful performance of the musical production entitled Coming to America which brought tears to many of those who remembered the sacrifice and travails of leaving their homeland and coming to the United States. Additional highlights of the evening were remembrances of 40 persons who made significant contributions to the Federation and 12 Awards for Service given to those who made major contributions to the Federation and to the Hungarian nation.

Memorial Day 2007:
AHF lays wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.AHF's 2007 Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery included a wreath laying the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 40 members and guests and throngs oftourists witnessed the special ceremony as AHF President Atilla Micheller was escorted by Lt. Col. Steve Vekony (US Army) and the First Califiornia Hussar Regiment. Arlington National is the final resting place for a number of Hungarian American Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. Following the wreath laying, the program included a remembrance and walking tour of Hungarian-American gravesites. [read more]

AHF presents the Louis Kossuth Bust in the United States Capitol
A Gift to the People of
the United States from the
American Hungarian Federation

To celebrate the friendship and shared values between the people of the United States and those of Hungarian descent, the American Hungarian Federation commissioned a bronze bust of Lajos Kossuth and offered it to U.S. Congress in 1990.

March 15, 1848

March 15 is Hungarian National Day commemorating the 1848 War of Independence and fight for Liberation and Democracy.Kossuth Lajos (Louis) (b. 1802, d. 1894, pronounced co-shoot luh-ysh) was Governor of Hungary and leader during fight for independence which was eventually defeated by the union of the royalist Austrian Habsburg and Russian Czarist Armies (1848 - 1849). Kossuth envisioned a federation in the Kingdom of Hungary in which all nationalties participated in a vibrant democratic system based on fundamental democratic principles such as equality and parliamentary representation. The bloody conflict eventually led to a great compromise known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in which Hungary gained some autonomy, although Kossuth would have no part in it and demanded full indepependence until his death. It also inadvertantly set the seeds for Hungary's dismemberment after WWI. [read more]

Publisher, Civil War Volunteer, Father of the Pulitzer Prize:Responsible for building of the Statue of Liberty

Hungarian-born Pulitzer was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the 1st New York Cavalry Regiment which he joined almost immediately upon his arrival in the US. After a time in NewYork sweatshops, he went west and became a reporter. He saved his money, bought partial ownership of the Westliche Post, and when successful sold it. He then bought the St. Louis Dispatch which he merged with the Evening Post, and once that was a success, went to New York, bought the New York World, and a publishing tycoon was born. He then turned his attention to the Statue of Liberty which sat disassembled in disgrace with New York refusing to pay for its erection. Pulitzer started a fund with this aim and put the name of anyone donating to this project in his newspaper, making him one of the earliest known adopters of crowd-funding. [read more]

Katalin Kdr Lynn, Ph.D. is a sustaining AHF Kovats Circle Member. She was born in Budapest and emigrated with her family to Germany at the end of WWII and then came to the US as part of the Displaced Persons immigration program. She was educated in the United States ( BA from the University of Colorado and an MLA from Washington University in St. Louis, MO). After a long career in the world of business, including a stint as a business professor at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO, she returned to graduate school to obtain a PhD at ELTE in Budapest and was awarded her PhD with honors. She is a publisher and author specializing in 20th century history, with an emphasis on WWII, the Cold War, and U.S.East European political relations and migr Political Movements. AHF Book Review: Transylvania Today: Diversity at Risk, edited by Csaba Zoltani. Written by noted experts, describes the issues faced by minorities in Transylvania in their effort to retain their identity in an adverse environment. The essays of the book capture some of the fault lines in Transylvania, created by the incorporation of a territory with western traditions into one of Byzantine culture. AHF Book Review: Rememberance (Pami): Polish Refugees in Hungary 1939-1946 (Emlkezs - Lengyel Menekltek Magyarorszagon 1939-1946) by Grzegorz and Krystyna Lubczyk. Throughout its history, Hungary offered refuge to a wide variety of ethnicities trying to escape persecution in their homelands. At the beginning and throughout the Second World War, Poles, including considerable number of its military, sought and received refuge from Nazi and Stalinist persecution. Eventually most of the soldiers went on and joined the Allied war effort and played an important part in the defeat of Nazi Germany.

A new two volume work by the former Polish ambassador to Hungary, Grzegorz ubczyk and his wife Krystyna under the patronage of the Polish president, document the story of the Polish refugees in Hungary in Emlkezs (Pami or Rememberance) Polish Refugees in Hungary 1939-1946. The first volume gives an overview of what transpired and the second volume gives personal stories of many of the nearly 120,000 Polish refugees who were granted redoubt at nearly 200 locations scattered throughout Hungary. Csaba Zoltani writes: Deborah Cornelius Hungary in World War II: Caught in the Cauldron (Fordham University Press, New York 2011) gives an excellent overview of the events leading up to and the horrendous events of World War II in Hungary. The effect of the Treaty of Trianon, that without plebiscites, truncated Hungary and deprived it of its natural resources and forced a sizeable portion of its population to live under alien jurisdiction, set the political and sociological climate in Hungary from the 1920's on. Cornelius gives an excellent overview of the readjustment that expressed itself in the politics and led to the belief that revision of the treaty was only possible through German intervention. 9/1/2017 - AHF and the entire Hungarian-American community mourns the loss of a great Hungarian and great American, Rev. Imre Bertalan, Jr.

Former AHF board member, Rev. Imre A. Bertalan, 67, of Ligonier, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017. He was born Oct. 4, 1949, in New Brunswick, N.J., son of the late Rev. Imre G. and Margaret Kosa Bertalan.

Rev. Bertalan was the executive director of Bethlen Communities since 1999 in Ligonier. He was an ordained clergy for the Hungarian Reformed Church of America and the Calvin Synod of the United Church of Christ. He was past president of the Rotary Club of Ligonier, and was a member of the Ligonier Valley Association of Churches and the Ligonier Valley Ministerial Association.

He was board member and member of the Executive Committee of the American Hungarian Federation and very active and dedicated to the Hungarian-American community, serving as Chairman of the Board of the Kossuth Foundation. [read more]
