Description:

Pardon our e-dust!YES, dear friend! You’ve reached The New Colony’s website. In this period of transition and transformation, we are in the process of building and migrating to a new website. In the meantime, you can see what we’re up to and reach out to us via Facebook or Instagram, where we’re always happy to answer any questions you might have.We hope to have things up and running soon and thank you for your interest and support of new plays. This reading is free with a suggested donation to Chicago Votes, an initiative to help spread awareness around voter rights and resources. Featuring original cast members Will Cavedo, Emilie Modaff, Taylor Raye, Shariba Rivers and Allyce Torres with stage directions by Kelsey McGrath.About the Play:In the summer of 2001, a renowned physicist invites three strangers to her family’s cabin. Horrified by the results of the recent Presidential election, the team of scientists set to work building an experimental machine with a wild and irresistible purpose: to get them the hell out of their awful timeline. Political differences, personality conflicts and a disruptive drug-dealing pizza driver ratchet up the tension; as the machine grows closer to completion, the team must reckon with what they will do when it’s finally time to turn it on. About Chicago Votes: Chicago Votes is a non-partisan, non-profit organization building a more inclusive democracy by putting power in the hands of young Chicagoans. We’re engaging and developing a new generation of leaders by opening the doors of government and politics to young people from all corners of the city. For additional information, please visit chicagovotes.com. (top) Will Cavedo, Shariba Rivers, Kelsey McGrath(bottom) Emilie Modaff, Taylor Raye, Allyce Torres Black Lives MatterAt the end of May, The New Colony (TNC) released a statement announcing our solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. We explained how, as an arts organization, we strive to hold a mirror up to our times. We stated that we condemn the police violence against citizens, and the continued lethal targeting of Black people. We claimed that we condemn this police violence today, yesterday, and tomorrow. It’s been many tomorrows since the end of May, and our stomachs still boil with the injustice that has continued across our city, our industry, and our country. To call these spaces ours means making space for everyone.TNC understands that in order to combat systemic racism, releasing a solidarity statement is not enough. We have privilege as an arts organization committed to producing and developing new plays. If we claim to be an antiracist organization, it is our responsibility to do the work and make radical change at every level within our reach.Owning up to this responsibility, TNC has both taken the following actions and doubled down on existing commitments to become an antiracist organization:Lobbying our venue, the Den Theatre, to open its lobby as a safe space for protestorsOffering full and partial scholarships for our educational classes—Writers’ Room and Intro to TNC—removing barriers to entry for studentsAmplifying the voices of Black artists. Providing resources and removing barriers to develop art as well as creating new opportunities. As an Ensemble, protesting the lack of justice following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and countless other Black lives murdered by police. The following changes and actions are on TNC’s timeline to complete within the year:Participate in anti racism and anti-bias training at all levels of the organizationCreate an antiracism policy to be enforced at all levels of the organization, including administration, production, and educational classesAmend our Board of Director bylaws to establish clear antiracist policies from the organization’s top downCreate affinity groups within our Ensemble to reduce harm during the process of becoming an antiracist organizationBuild community by consensus organizing, collaborating with BIPOC communities before entering transactional relationshipsRevise the company name to remove “colony”Examine our relationships with funders and grantmaking organizationsWe promise transparency as we interrogate our role in the inherently racist structure underlying the theater industry and our country at large, and we encourage you to keep us accountable for our actions.Below are the resources we’re looking to right now for guidance; they by no means make up a comprehensive list, and we are committed to listening and following the lead of Black leaders.Learn:New Repertory Theater’s antiracism toolkitVideos - The danger of a single story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (TED talk), Want to become a fiercely antiracist organization?, Arts and Culture as Part of the Solution: Intro to Systemic Racism, Can art amend history? by Titus Kaphar (TED talk)Podcasts - The Nod, The Stoop, Risk!
