The first two of the big four national championships are here! Russian and Japanese nationals start in just a few hours and The Judges' Table will be covering both of them. Grand Prix Final champion Yuzuru Hanyu is out with the flu, but other big stars will still be skating this weekend, including Shoma Uno, Satoko Miyahara, Mao Asada, Evgenia Medvedeva, Anna Pogorilaya, Stolbova/Klimov, Tarasova/Morozov, Bobrova/Soloviev, and what seems like several tons of other talented technicians and performers. I'm personally excited for the Japanese ladies event, which seems to be among the deepest of the competitions this weekend.

We have six judges joining us for each event! Thanks to all of them for participating during the holiday season. Because of the timing, expect that our rejudging will be available a little bit later than normal.

Here are the judges!

Japanese Nationals
Banana W.(@quadsal)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan, if any.I went to GPF 2015 and kind of cried the entire time. Also, a lady from the JSF laughed really, really hard at me once.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Akiko Suzuki's career??

Bea (@tweenershots) |You Only Lutz Once
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I co-founded and blog in You Only Lutz Once. I also co-founded Tropical Frost, a fan site dedicated to Michael Christian Martinez (PHI). Outside streaming, I've watched Four Continents in Taipei last season. (I was probably on TV too many times because of the many banners we had, especially that "The CHANpion is Back" banner. This season, I got to watch Asian Open Trophy and got to meet and cheer for many of my favorite skaters.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Tatsuki Machida's 2014 Worlds free skate

Heidi M. (@heihei_0422)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.Casually watched Euros and Worlds as a child, started to follow the sport more actively in late 2011 (why then? no idea) and now I'm at a point where every missed live stream of any A-level competition is A Failure At Life.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Satoko Miyahara's free skate at 2016 Worlds.

Ioana(@iguana012)|Tumblr
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.My experiences with figure skating have been staying up or waking up at ridiculous hours, arguing with my laptop, growing gray hair watching my faves, but also enjoying beautiful programs, unforgettable performances and making edits and gifs.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Daisuke Takahashi's Blues For Klook at the 2012 World Championships.

MJ C. (@arabesquing)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan, if any.I can swizzle and stroke around a rink! That's about the best I can do as a skater. :P I've been watching skating since the Sochi Olympics and had the great privilege to attend 2016 Worlds in Boston in person! (And got drunk in the hotel bar while surrounded by skaters, but that's another story.)
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Tatsuki Machida's 2014 Worlds short program should have broken 100.

Spiccine (@Spiccine)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan, if any.I fell in love with figure skating watching Plushenko's Euros 2005 FP on TV. After a few years I decided I absolutely had to learn to skate and now I'm teaching to kids. My fav skaters are Yuzuru and Shoma.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Misha Ge's programs in general, he deserves higher scores in Interpretation of the music and composition. Also Takahashi's 2012 Worlds FP, but there are so many, especially regarding PCs!

Russian Nationals

J.J. (@RealDetective) |Tumblr
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.One time Meryl Davis told me happy birthday and another time a security guard told me he took a picture of me and Zach Donohue but he unknowingly never actually pressed the button and I didn't want to ask Zach for another picture. It was all very sad. Except for the Meryl part. Which made being old worth it.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Davis/White 2014 US Nationals Free Dance and let me tell you why, you see one judge (specifically Mary Karen Henderson OF THEIR VERY OWN HOME STATE OF MICHIGAN) thought that they were worthy of only +2 GOE on two elements and had the gall, THE GALL, to give them a 9.75 in one (1) PCS category WHICH IS A FULL STEP LESS THAN WHAT IS SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE. Sure, these scores are thrown out and Meryl Elizabeth Davis and Chuck White scored the maximum amount of points possible BUT THE PRINCIPLE. The principle. (Don't @ me.)

Kara M. (
@NamasteRead)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I took lessons from 13-15, but ended up quitting during Freestyle 1 due to lack of finances and talent (ha!), but I've been a fan of figure skating since Katarina Witt skated at the 88 Olympics. I used to practice jumps in my basement in my socks. Sasha Cohen forever!
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Honestly? Anything Mirai Nagasu does. Until this season anyway. I think the judges have been really unfair to her over the years. Also, Ashley Wagner's short program at the Sochi Olympics. I'll never forget her face in the KC.

Matthew
R. (@mrusskie93)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.Never was a skater but have attended three Worlds (2009, 2013, and 2016), and three U.S. Nationals (2006, 2013, 2014).
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Mao Asada's Sochi LP: indisputably the best free skate of the event. More recently, Satoko Miyahara's LP at Skate Canada: lowish PCS and an invalid step sequence seemed like a convenient way to keep her behind Kaetlyn Osmond.

Nori (@NakedIceBlog)|The Naked Ice Blog
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.Long time fan, runner of the Naked Ice Blog...and I can stroke around pretty well on ice skates...I can even skate backward (very slowly).
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? It used to be Christina Gao at the 2013 Nationals but I think I'm going with Mao Asada's Sochi FS.

Ryan P. (@jetsfan_85)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I used to compete from ages 15-17 and casually skated for years later. Just got back into it this year (31y.o now). I watch every GP competition of the year as well as Canadian and American Nationals etc.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Bourne/Kraatz River Dance 1998 Worlds...they should have won gold.

TJ C. (@Tsk8c)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I am a current competitor in ice dancing (and a first-time national qualifier!). I'm a huge fan of the sport, but it's not like I have a problem or anything (hehehe...).
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje's FD at the 2014 GP Final.

For the first time, The Judges' Table is taking on the Junior Grand Prix final. JGPF is one of the few international junior events to be intertwined with senior events and therefore gets nearly as much attention - often more, it seems, than Junior Worlds, which we judged last year for our first junior event. The competitors at this year's JGPF range in age from 14 to 21, bringing along a huge variety in their technical and program components skill sets: some of competitors have never previously been on a stage this big, while others would be extremely competitive among their senior-level teammates. Several of this week's judges found the variety exciting and engaging. Others kindly requested that they never be asked to judge a junior event ever again.

It is with this in mind that I thank, profusely, this week's Junior GPF judges! Due to a website glitch(thanks, Weebly!),I wasn't able to introduce them to you before the event, but here they are now:

Clara P. (@jimboppa)|You Only Lutz Once
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I am the other half of skating blog You Only Lutz Once, as well as a founding member of Michael Christian Martinez (PHI)'s fansite Tropical Frost. I also try translating updates on Team Korea. Besides streaming, I've watched Four Continents in Taipei last season. (Yes, I was one of the two "banner-waving girls caught on TV too many times). Jin Seo Kim (KOR) hugged me at Asia Open Trophy earlier this August, and we had a conversation in both Korean and English.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Kim Yuna's free skate at the 2014 Olympics. Enough said.

Di L. (@magicaleggrolls) |So You Want to Watch Figure Skating
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.Sleep-deprived for skating since the 2010 Olympics. I post streaming links and other resources at So You Want to Watch Figure Skating. One time I met Takahiko Kozuka and accidentally touched his armpit.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Akiko Suzuki's 2012 NHK Trophy FS

Elisa|Tumblr
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I've been a roller skater for 15 years (and also competed nationally), but of course I am also into ice skating. I have always watched it, but become obsessed after the Sochi Olympics.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Satoko Miyahara's FS at Worlds 2016 - she was well judged generally, but SO underscored if compared to the other ladies.

MandyS. (@__heck)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I'd been a very casual fan since I was a kid, but I turned on the 2014 Olympics while I worked at home during a snowstorm and immediately developed A Problem. Since then, I've gone to almost every show in driving distance, lost countless hours of sleep watching overseas comps, attended Worlds (!), and made so many amazing friends.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Jeremy Abbott's SP at 2015 Nationals.

Patrick (@Team_PDD) |Patrick Commentates Skating
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I'm that crazy guy that leads prayer circles on twitter before competitions. One time I met Ashley Wagner, and it was awesome.

What a crazy weekend! If you didn't watch live and checked in on the scoring after the events happened, you were in for several surprises: gold for Tarasova/Morozov, a third-place short dance for Papadakis/Cizeron, Hubbell/Donohue beating Chock/Bates, Nathan Chen landing four different quadson his way to a silver medal ahead of multiple world champions, not to mention Shoma Uno putting himself back on the podium ahead of those same champions, and Maria Sotskova finding herself the third of the four Russian women at this event - and a much stronger contender for the world team - after Elena Radionova left the door open in the free skate.

Thank you to this week's Senior GPF judges! Due to a website glitch (thanks, Weebly!),I wasn't able to introduce them to you before the event, but here they are now:

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.Wanted to learn to skate for years, but didn't have the time, money, and courage all at the same time til a couple years ago; now I sloooowly work my way through the skills in between multiple jobs, grad school, and, you know, life. I've watching skating all my life, and in recent years have particularly gravitated towards ice dance.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Everyone keeps saying Mao's Olympic FS, so I'm going to go for the lower ranks and say Hawayek/Baker's 2015 US Nationals FD.

NHK Trophy included a weirdly one-sided Battle Royale for ice dance dominance and an insane number of possible qualifiers to the Grand Prix Final putting down fairly impressive programs. Now that we know who qualified in all four disciplines, all eyes turn towards Marseilles, where, in just a week, some of the best skaters in the world will compete for the only title that matters, according to a certain figure skating anime. (I couldn't figure out a witty way to includethis, so here you go, out of context.)

Thank you to this week's fantastic judges!

Happy Thanksgiving from The Judges' Table, based in the US. I'm grateful for all of you!

The 2016 NHK Trophy startstonight. With one last chance for the skaters to make the Grand Prix Final, expect the competition to be relatively intense, especially in the singles events, where qualification is far from clear. We'll also get our first head-to-head matchup between teammates Papadakis/Cizeron and Virtue/Moir, and an opportunity for one of the new Chinese teams to make a statement.

Thanks to the judges at the table for NHK Trophy this weekend!

Picture Credit: ISU Cup of China has not-so-fondly become known as Cup of Disasteramong a growing contingent of skating fans who have found themselves frustrated bypoorly handled crashesandmultiple ice dance falls, among other disappointments. This year was no different. Reigning world silver medalist Ashley Wagner was hit with sevenunderrotation calls. Daniel Samohin ended his Grand Prix season with a second place short program and a last place free skate.Hao Zhang had his first fall in competition since 2010 and none of the top pairs managed a clean combination jump. The ice dance team ofHong Chen and Yan Zhao performed quite admirably in their first Grand Prix event ever but managed to get three deductions - practically unheard of in ice dance - thanks to an extended lift, a fall, and an "interruption in excess" when it took Chen over five seconds to get up from the fall and the program was effectively paused.

But it wasn't all bad! With great skates by Elena Radionova, Patrick Chan, and the Shibutanis, among many others, there was plenty to celebrate at Cup of China this year. Thanks to this week's judges, who helped us navigate the good, the bad, and the extremely ugly:

Cup of China starts in roughly 5.5 hours and boasts probably the deepest ladies' field we'll see before the Grand Prix Final. Five women are legitimately in the medal hunt, all angling for a spot at the GPF in Marseille. Pairs features the debut of new team Peng/Jin against former teammates Yu/Zhang, which probably won't be at all weird for anyone, I'm sure. The Shibutanis and Weaver/Poje headline ice dance. Maia and Alex come in as the favorites, but drew first in the short dance, and expect Weaver/Poje to be at the top of their game, as they need to beat the Shibs to secure themselves a spot in Marseille. The men's event offers several attempts at redemption for the likes of Boyang Jin, Han Yan, Max Aaron, and Ross Miner, all of whom have medaled at Grand Prix in previous years but started the season with less-than-impressive performances.

The reigning figure skating world champions did not disappoint at Trophee de France this weekend: Javier Fernandez, Evgenia Medvedeva, and Papadakis/Cizeron each won their events by 15-21 points. But in a weekend marred by injuries and meltdowns, a few other skaters really stood out, including Adam Rippon, whose personal best free skate contained wowed the judges and the audience with his interpretation, and Misha Ge, whose presence, passion, and quality skating made his performances shine.

Here are our judges for Trophee de France!

What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?I still think Scott Tessa should be two-time Olympic Champions, definitely underscored in Sochi.

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. When I grew up there were no rinks around, so my skating experience was on roller skates, on which I could do all kinds of amazing tricks. My ice skating has been limited to ponds as a youth, and a few lessons as an adult.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Guignard/Fabbri at 2016 Europeans in the FD behind a bunch of stale and uninspiring Russian pairs teams and the acrobatic but mismatched Coomes and Buckland.

Sigrid (@Mirrorhands)
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?I always felt the Kerrs were underscored during their whole career. Their programs on the 2010 Olympics were original, fresh but they got harsh marks from the judges.

And we're halfway done! The second half of the Grand Prix series kicks off this weekend in Paris, where the newly-named Trophee de France will feature a lotof reigning world champions. Especially anticipated is - finally- the Grand Prix debut of reigning ice dance world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron. Rostelecom Cup champion (and world champion!) Javier Fernandez will be back competing for a second weekend in a row, and this time, he comes in as a clear favorite. But if quad-crazy American teenager Nathan Chen goes nearly-clean, Javi will be relying on his components to secure gold. German pair Savchenko/Massot are also back for a second week in a row and, thanks to clean elements, great components, and a throw quad salchow!? they also remain the clear favorites in a very, very small pairs field. The ladies event features the practically-unbeatable reign world champ Evgenia Medvedeva, the still-struggling Gracie Gold, and a surging Gabrielle Daleman.

Let's meet our seven (7!) judges for Trophee de France!

Emily E. (@JoyofEmily)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.Lifelong figure skater. Currently coaching teeny tiny Learn To Skate and Low Freestyle skaters, passing on my love of the Kerrigan spiral.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Hubbell Donohue's 2015/16 Short Dance certainly did not receive the credit it was due all season.

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I started skating 13 years ago and have been competing for 10 years. I am currently at the Novice level and I literally spend all of my free time on skating. Literally. Watching skating, researching skating, dreaming about skating.
What's your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years?Ashley Wagner's 2016 Worlds Short Program. She should have been the leader.

Judit F.
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.I was an ISU referee and ISU Technical Delegate until 2003. Since 2003 I have been a commentator for figure skating at Eurosport Hungary.
