It waslate July and I was sitting on my front porch thinking about the upcoming ODTseason.I was wondering about dance companies and how they could become more engaged intheir community. Obviously our goal is to expand audiences, but it occurs to methat many view dance, particularly ballet as inaccessible.
The ideaof Beer Ballet is not new. I began to hear of dance companies using thisconcept as a way to reach new audiences about 5 years ago. The idea alwaysintrigued me and felt this fall would be a good time for us to try the event. Iapproached Artistic Director, Denise Gula about the idea of a more intimate instudio event featuring our own company dancers choreography along with theidea of food and beer. Denise agreed that it was an opportunity to connect withour local audience in a new way.
The freein studio performance gives our dancers a chance to create their ownchoreography in a more intimate setting. The audience will have a chance torelax and enjoy the performance then mingle with the professional companydancers. I sat down to talk with the three company members who arechoreographing for the upcoming event.
MonicaStarr is doing a selection from Rimsky-KorsakovsScheherazade. Starr states,Ever since I performed to Kathy Posins Scheherazade with the MilwaukeeBallet, I have loved the musical score. I consider this particular musicselection, very exciting as it builds from the slow and sultry melody of thesolo violin, into an impassioned musical explosion. I didnt enter intochoreographing the piece with a definedbeginning, middle and conclusion, butmore of a continual exploration that builds in determination, with an emphasison group support. I love this piece; it shows me more and more each day. Butwhat is most exciting is how the dancers take it and show itback to me in ways I didn't expect. And that is the great and exciting risk youtake when choreographing.

Thesecond piece being choreographed is by company member, Jennifer Norris. Choreographingis fun and a great experience for me. I learn how to work differently withpeople and how I can work to get what I want across to the dancers. The piece Ichose to choreograph is about Spanish maidens that are heartbroken due to theirmen having to leave for war. The piece's intent is about "Love". Thatis the original title for the piece but I might change it. It has been such apleasure to set this piece on the ODT dancers. The music is originally composedby Hayden Hinchman of Columbus. He made the music to my idea for the dance. Thesimple piano plays with the love strings of the heart and also takes youthrough the story.

Thelast of the dancer choreographed works for the program is by Kasha Hilton.Hilton expresses, My piece for Ballet,Brauts Beer is inspired by my incredible summer spent at Hubbard StreetDance Chicago. Within in the program we had two classes called Improvisation,creating movement on the spot without pre-planning, and Creation, creatingpieces of our own and collaborating with others to create viewable pieces. Bothof which proved to be entirely out of my comfort zone at first. Once I was ableto set aside the boundary of comfort and learn how to put myself into the twoconcepts, I was really able to allow movement to come to me naturally withoutmuch thought. Much of my piece is based off multiple phrases of improvisationthat have been formed into phrases of workable choreography. It is a two minutepiece set to an instrumental called Convergence by the rock band 30 Secondsto Mars. I did not necessarily choreograph to the music thinking of the conceptof converging or with that specific title. As of now it is more of conceptpiece, where the music and the dancing creates what is seen, rather than astory line."

He also studied at Les Jeunes Danseurs with Javier Dubraq and attended the Chautauqua Summer Dance Program, training with Jean Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride. In 1999, Mr. Ulbricht was invited by the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, to continue his training during their Winter Program. As a student at SAB, Mr. Ulbricht performed with New York City Ballet as a Jester in Peter Martins' The Sleeping Beauty. In December 2000, he became an apprentice with New York City Ballet and in November 2001 he joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet. In January 2005, Mr. Ulbricht was promoted to the rank of soloist and principal dancer in May 2007.Mr. Ulbricht is also the Artistic Director of Stars of American Ballet, formerly Daniel Ulbricht and Friends, a touring group that brings high-caliber dance to underserved markets in the United States and abroad. Dancers come from New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet and more.

Stocker Arts Center is located on the campus of Lorain County Community College, 1005, N. Abbe Rd., Elyria, OH.Adapted from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale and performed to Sergei Prokofiev's beautiful score, the ballet tells the story of a young girl who is treated cruelly by her stepmother and ugly stepsisters. With the help of her fairy godmother, she is magically transformed and attends the royal ball where she attracts the attention of the handsome prince. The company last performed Cinderella in 2003 but audiences will be treated to a freshly updated version according to Ms. Gula. "Often with full length ballets it's good to have some distance." stated Gula. "After all, the choreographer is just another kind of storyteller whose audience is treated to the vision the choreographer sees. There's certainly an intimate relationship between yourself and the dances you put on the stage", reflects Gula. "Like any relationship, it's always evolving, changing and hopefully growing," continued Gula. "A lot of the choreography has been reconstructed. There is more dancing and I think there is a better balance between characters."

From Radio City Music Hall to TV, Film and Broadway Carolyn has done it all. Carolyn has worked with such icons as Twyla Tharp, Blake Edwards and Martin Scorsese. She has danced leading roles in Billy Joel/Twyla Tharps Movin Out and Ms. Tharps Come Fly Away, Boardwalk Empire, and the soon to be released film Winters Tale.
This workshop will focus on learning original Broadway Choreography. Come to class warmed up. Studio will be available 30 minutes before class begins.
