Event description Description

We're bringing back movie night and combining it with bookclub! We're going to start things off the summer with the Hunger Games. Will gather and socialize and snack at 6:30 PM and will start the movie at 7 PM. Afterwards, we'll talk about the movie and the book. Here are some questions that we may be discussing:

How did the casting of the movie compare with the images of the characters that you had built in your mind while reading the book? What made the Hunger Games (book and/or movie) appealing to you? Unappealing?Do you feel this is an original work of art or derivative? How does the Hunger Games relate to the trend of dystopian fiction coming out now? What do you think is fueling the popularity of dystopian novels?Plus whatever people want to talk about! Please add discussion topics in the comments.

Also, we have a challenge scheduling this … June is a month chock full of activities especially for the queer community. It was actually possible for us to pick a date that didn't overlap with something else (because, quite simply, there is something going on every single day in June). If there's something going on on the 27th that you feel is enough of a conflict that we should change the date, please let us know.

This event is organized by The Miracle Bookmobile and Liberating Ourselves Locally.

Organizer Liberating Ourselves Locally

Organizer of Hunger Games Movie and Book discussion w/ the Miracle Bookmobile!

Liberating Ourselves Locally (LOL) is a POC-led, gender balanced Oakland Maker Space. Come visit and make cool things!

Founded and led by people of color, Liberating Ourselves Locally (LOL!) works for a future where members of our community can be involved in all aspects of creating things that sustain us, such as food, entrepreneurship, clothing, energy, technology, shelter, and art. We intend to be a center that addresses head-on the race, gender, and income gap in STEM and startups. We are a local movement whose primary purpose is to serve our communities: people of color, immigrants, poor folks, women, youth, transfolks, and queers in and around the Bay Area. We intend to preserve and celebrate the beautiful diversity of our communities by ensuring that our leadership reflects the people we serve. We seek to make our primary services available to everyone regardless of means.

We're at:

1234 23rd Ave.
Oakland, CA 94606

We don't have regular hours yet, but if you want to visit outside of an event, please leave a note on our Facebook page.
