Description:

There is certainly less to do in the garden at this time of the year, which is just as well as there seems to be plenty to do indoors anyway!  Something I have done this year to add some sparkle to my front garden is to ‘plant’ some lovely little white solar powered led lights through the planting – the latest solar powered outdoor lights are now really reasonably priced, and the solar panels no longer seem to require  much in the way of sunshine to operate well.  I’m thinking of leaving them there all year anyway now….they are so lovely! This week I have planted out some red tulip bulbs. Tulips are really the only bulbs that can still be planted out this late in the year, and even into January the great thing is that they will flower at the very same time as any planted earlier in the autumn, just with slightly shorter stems, which can be a bonus.  The expectation of watching them popping up early in the spring is very exciting! Last week was National Tree Week and we planted numerous native saplings in public places around Faversham –– leaving everyone feeling tired, but so full of optimism for the future!Fern Fern Alder of Full Frontal Gardens attended the RHS Flower Show Chelsea this year in her expert capacity. FF Website admin Angela Fleming sought her out at the Pure Land Foundation s garden, designed by Fernando Gonzalez.  The garden is inspired by the Chinese landscape; harmonious, contemplative and serene.  The flowing shape of the garden aims to evoke a sense of wellbeing and positive energy in spirit with nature.  Here are some shots of the garden which contains a planting colour palette influenced by the principal colours used in Buddhist art. The Summer of 2014 has been truly magical, staying warm until just a few days ago! I m afraid I find myself already looking forward to 2015 and when I heard that the Plant of The Year was going to be the sunflower,  I got pretty excited.  You get so much for so little with these wonderful statuesque happy plants.  Pop in a tiny seed in the spring and just watch all that growth.  Now sunflowers are being sold as edible plants, but even without this they certainly always make me smile and the bonus of providing food for birds over the winter and giving numerous seeds for the following year making them a very attractive option.  I discovered this year that if you should happen to have a glut, they last looking good for at least three weeks in a vase.I m certainly hoping we can make a really big splash of sunflowers around the towns next year  I ll have lots of seeds to give away and the Spring Plant Swap could be a great opportunity to share out different varieties with each other.   Something to plot and plan and enjoy the thought of over the coming winter months. My plants were mostly hidden behind the wall, apart from the ones on the window-sill.  This meant that they couldn t be seen and may not have been getting enough light.  When I got some new garden furniture, I found a way to re-use the old furniture (which I had thought was only fit for the dump) and solve the plant problem.  The small table went into the corner, with plants arranged on the top and I hacksawed the back off the chairs and used them as plant stands too.  The front now looks very full, much more effective, the plants are getting more light and a few less items went into groundfill.
