Well, it looks like Hollywood is finally ready to throw in the towel on the 2020 moviegoing year and acknowledge that a potential comeback for U.S. movie theatres will have to wait until next year. With the U.S. setting a new daily record for new COVID-19 cases yesterday, Disney has quietly pulled the upcoming 20th Century Studios releases Free Guy and Death on the Nile from their release schedule. They were among the few major studio films still scheduled to hit theatres before the end of the year but this seems like a pretty strong indication that the other remaining titles (in particular, Wonder Woman 1984) will soon follow suit. Read more Between Bill Ted Face the Music and the release of his documentary Showbiz Kids on HBO, Alex Winter has already had a pretty busy year, but now the trailer for his second documentary of 2020 has also dropped. Zappa is a feature-length exploration of the outspoken and inimitable music icon Frank Zappa and was made in cooperation with Zappa s estate. The movie mixes never-before-seen home movies, interviews and live footage that show him pushing boundaries not just in terms of music but also politics and ideas as well. It is being called the definitive documentary on Frank Zappa and one that aims to please both hardcore fans and outsiders alike. Zappa arrives in theatres for one night only on Nov. 23rd followed by a VOD release on Nov. 27th; check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Read more Although it seems unlikely that the original live-action Star Wars Holiday Special will ever get an official re-release from Lucasfilm even under new ownership, this year Disney is putting together a brand new animated special that at least acknowledges it indirectly. The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is a brand new 44 minute adventure that picks up after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (does that make it canon?) but through some sort of time travel device brings Rey back through other eras of Star Wars history in celebration of Life Day. Kelly Marie Tran, Billy Dee Williams and Anthony Daniels lend their voices along with several members of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars voice cast. For better or worse, it looks like a very self-aware, very family-friendly Star Wars spin-off but whether it will be a travesty on par with the original remains to be seen. Read more Although Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele s Candyman remake keeps having its theatrical release pushed back due to the ongoing pandemic, that hasn t stopped Peele from moving forward with another 90s horror remake in the meantime. This time around he has reportedly set his sights on Wes Craven s 1991 film The People Under the Stairs, another cult movie that seems ripe for rediscovery and ready to be molded to current day social issues. The original film starred Brandon Adams and Ving Rhames as two residents of a Los Angeles housing project who are being evicted and decide to break into the home of their greedy landlords (played by Everett McGill and Wendy Robie). That being said, the movie does not seem to be one of his bigger hits (it reportedly performed the worst out of all the major releases for China s National Day Golden Week last month). Directed by long-time collaborator Stanley Tong (Rumble in the Bronx, Supercop), it stars Jackie Chan as an accountant who is being chased by mercenaries and protected by a covert security company called Vanguard. The set up makes a certain amount of sense considering that he is doing less stuntwork himself these days and instead relying on younger action stars to handle the heavy lifting. Vanguard is set to hit U.S. theatres on Nov. 20th but no VOD release has been announced as of yet. Check out the trailer below and see what you think. Read more Some sad news to report from over the weekend that is sure to hit James Bond fans hard. The original 007, Sir Thomas Sean Connery, passed away on Saturday at his home in the Bahamas. His son Jason reported that he had been unwell for some time and that it was A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor. In addition to being the first to play James Bond, Connery had a long and successful career with many other high points including an Oscar win for his role in The Untouchables and a beloved performance as Indy s father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He was 90 years old. Read more It has been eight months since COVID-19 hit and we re just now starting to see some movies being released that were shot over that period of time including Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Totally Under Control (not to mention a handful of smaller indie films). Also this week we have the first trailer for Songbird, a Michael Bay-produced thriller that was not only shot during COVID but also uses the pandemic as a starting point for a dystopian near-future scenario. Co-written and directed by Adam Mason (Into the Dark), the movie revolves around an immune courier trying desperately to make it across Los Angeles to save his girlfriend from being thrown into a quarantine camp after her neighbour is found to be infected. Songbird stars KJ Apa, Sofia Carson, Demi Moore, Bradley Whitford, Craig Robinson, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Walter Hauser and Peter Stormare and the release date is still TBA. Read more It wouldn t be Halloween without an appearance from Michael Myers and although the next installment in the long-running horror franchise was delayed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Universal and Blumhouse have given fans a new teaser to hold them over. The sequel is once again directed by David Gordon Green and features Jamie Lee Curtis returning along with several other actors from the past including Nancy Stephens as Nurse Marion, Robert Longstreet as Lonnie Elam and Kyle Richards as Lindsey Wallace. Anthony Michael Hall is also taking on the role of Tommy Doyle, previously played by Paul Rudd in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Read more Fresh off its premiere at the Raindance Film Festival, the first trailer for the upcoming David Bowie biopic Stardust has arrived online. Needless to say, any Bowie biopic was bound to be under a lot of scrutiny but this is an unauthorized film without the blessing of Bowie s family and without the rights to use any of his music, which makes it an even harder sell. Starring British musician Johnny Flynn (Emma, Lovesick) in the lead role, the movie focuses on Bowie s 1971 tour of the U.S. and the creation of his Ziggy Stardust persona. Marc Maron plays publicist Ron Oberman while Jena Malone plays his then wife Angie. Directed by Gabriel Range (Death of a President), Stardust arrives in select theatres and on VOD on Nov. 25th.
