Our faculty are well known for their research world-wide and work on externally funded research projects, many of which have a positive impact on our community. Our student clubs (co-)organize many events and activities.[photo from 2019 SheInnovates, Pitt's Women Hackathon] We are located in the City of Pittsburgh, consistently voted one of the most livable cities in the US. The Department of Computer Science is celebrating 55 years of research and teaching excellence. Our community includes 32 full-time faculty members, two staff members, over 100 graduate students, over 900 pre-CS/CS majors, and thousands of alumni. We are part of the School of Computing and Information (est. 2017). Dr. Adriana Kovashka receives NSF Career Award Dr. Adriana Kovashka (assistant professor, CS) just received an NSF Career Award. Her project is looking into object detection, i.e., the task of recognizing object categories (e.g., dog, car) by learning from a dataset. Existing methods assume a dataset labeled meticulously by humans who draw boxes around objects in images and provide the category name. Dr. Kovashka's project explores a new form of more accessible (less expensive), but also noisier supervision akin to how children learn to name objects.  More Information WiCS Club Creates Space for Community WiCS (Women in Computer Science) is open to students of all genders and is a club designed to foster diversity in the field of computing by creating a community of support for its members.  Diane Litman receives Provost’s Award Dr. Diane Litman (professor, Computer Science senior scientist, LRDC) received one of the three Provost’s Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring in 2020. CS Undergrads Create VaccinatePA.org Four CS undergraduate students created a website to make finding a COVID-19 vaccine appointment easier by collecting information from users about vaccine availability and allowing users to easily find the most up to date information. Colloquium on Inclusive Teaching Practices Dr. Colleen Lewis (UIUC) discussed teaching practices that faculty can easily integrate into the classroom. Most importantly, these are practices that can have a differential benefit for students of color, women, and first-generation college students. New Pitt Cyber Accelerator Grant Dr. Malihe Alikhani (assistant professor, CS) received one of the four Fall 2020 Pitt Cyber Accelerator Grants, which provide initial funding for novel and innovative multidisciplinary efforts that advance Pitt Cyber’s mission.
