*** The CHARGE program ended on September 30, 2019 and some links may be outdated. *** NSF ADVANCE Program The goal of the NSF ADVANCE Program is to increase the participation of women in the academic science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and social, behavioral and economic (SBE) science careers. Since 2001, the NSF has invested over $130 million in over 100 institutions to help affect the underrepresentation of women in these fields. The exhibit features photographic and narrative portraits of women STEM faculty at UVA and juxtaposes this with a history of women attending UVA and the recent conversations about women in STEM taking place on social media. Check out UVA CHARGE Facebook to catch up! (Re)Imaging Women in STEM Portrait Narrative Exhibits | Special Speaker Series Joanne M. Cohoon It is with deep sadness that we report our colleague, friend, and Co-PI for CHARGE, Joanne M. Cohoon, lost her battle with breast cancer on February 14, 2016. Joanne was a National Center for Women in Information Technology (NCWIT) Consultant and Research Scientist, and a Professor in the Engineering and Society Department at UVA. Her research area was gender, technology, and education and she published numerous studies on departmental factors that influence recruitment and retention of women undergraduate and graduate students in computer science. Joanne was recognized for her innovative approaches to teaching that attracted young women to computing, engineering, and math with the A. Richard Newton Educator ABIE Award, and, with her husband Jim, ran the successful Tapestry Workshops each summer for high school computer science teachers. The CHARGE team remembers Joanne's sense of humor, intellectual rigor, and passion for diversifying STEM. We will miss our colleague. In honor of Joanne's life achievements, we announce the Joanne McGrath Cohoon Enhancement Grants that will support professional development and advancement for women STEM faculty. At the request of her family, all donations to NCWIT between now and the 2016 Summit will be received in Joanne's honor. You may make a donation here. Donations help support NCWITs programs, campaigns, and alliances with the goal of increasing women's participation in technology and computer sciences. American Council on Higher Education (ACE): Pipelines Pathways and Institutional Leadership Status of Women UVA CHARGE Program Update Last Spring, the CHARGE program hosted its 3rd Year Site Visit by NSF. The purpose of the site visit was to provide an external mid-point evaluation of the program and a set of recommendations to improve programmatic results. Overall, CHARGE had a very positive NSF site visit resulting in some exciting changes in our program. Many faculty members participated in the site visit, and we send a heartfelt thank you to all participants—you made it a success! As a result of the site visit, CHARGE combined and restructured the program goals in order to take advantage of synergies between old and new projects. We are also proceeding with institutionalizing our projects that have shown success so they will be sustained beyond the life of our grant. As part of the CHARGE “institutionalization” process, responsibility for this portal has moved to the provost’s office. They have joined forces with the office of Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights (EOCR) to develop a new search portal, utilizing some material and resources from the CHARGE portal. This module will acquaint you with policies, procedures and resources related to the recruitment and selection of faculty, staff and healthcare professionals. It also offers information about bias as it relates to academic searches.
