Jan Schakowsky, U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, State Sen.Sara Feigenholtz, State Sen.Heather Steans, State Rep. Ann Williams, State Rep. Greg Harris, and State Rep. Kelly Cassidy. State Rep.Margaret Croke was elected for the first time, winning the seat formerly held by Sara Feigenholtz.Looking NE at Broadway Wilson (Pappageorge Haymes)After revisions with the city's Department of Planning, the development that most of Uptown has been patiently waiting for is finally moving forward. You might recall that The John Buck Company along with Free Market Ventures are now partnering to develop the 9 story project at 4601 N. Broadway. Final details of the project have been worked out and demolition approval has been granted by the Landmarks Commission for the property stretching from 4601 N. Broadway through 4617 N. Broadway. The John Buck Company shared the following details of the project with Uptown Update:"The general contractor will be McHugh Construction and the architect is Pappageorge Haymes. There will be a total of 200 units with a mix of studios, one, two and three bedroom units. The ground level will feature 9,000 square feet of retail with the hopes of attracting a retailer such as a restaurant or a coffeeshop.Residents of the building will enjoy mobile-device controlled entry points and touchless elevator system, as well as individual reservable office spaces on each residential floor. The building will also feature a dog wash center. The top floor amenity space will include a robust co-working center, fitness center, game room and resident lounge adjacent to expansive outdoor lounge with grills and fireplaces."It's been a long time coming, and we look forward to seeing demolition crews on site soon!1025 W. SunnysideThe retail space on the SE corner of Broadway Sunnyside has been vacant since Mattress Firm closed down last year but according to permits posted on the building, that won't be the case for long.Howard Brown Health currently has office space in the building but they are expanding their footprint with a prominent space on the corner. Another permit was issued so a tent could be erected on the lot directly to the south for COVID testing. This space will eventually be landscaped as part of the Howard Brown expansion. Reed Construction is listed as the general contractor.Howard Brown does great work for the community and we look forward to seeing what they have in store for this space.Workers are now dismantling the street level facade. The upcoming "Wilson Club" apartments at 1124 W. Wilson have been completely gutted and rebuilt on the interior. Now we are getting a glimpse at what City Pads has planned for the exterior. The metal cornice that wrapped around the front of the building and back onto Clifton has been cleaned up, primed, and painted a dark gray/black color. All of the windows have been replaced and tuckpointing has been completed.Exposed brick on storefrontsNow, the 1960s era stone is being removed around the street level storefronts. According to the rendering, new windows will stretch upward, almost double in height, and fill the majority of the section currently being removed. That is certain to be more welcoming than what pedestrians have been greeted with for as long as most anyone can remember.Future home of "Falafel Grill" at 1433 W. MontroseA well-known Mediterranean restaurant in Wicker Park is expanding to the corner of Clark and Montrose in a space previously occupied by Uptown Update favoriteReal Kitchen.Tasty kabob platters (F G Facebook)Falafel Grill has been serving up delicious Mediterranean fare for over 8 years at 1317 W. Milwaukee. According to the website, they pride themselves in preparing everything fresh daily, down to the sauces. You can expect traditional fare such as hummus, grape leaves, and shawarmas. If you are feeding a large group, they do offer catering. No official opening date posted, but we will let know you. In the meantime, be sure to follow theirFacebook page.Daylight Saving Time officially ended at 2am, so set your clocks back and enjoy the extra hour. (On the other hand, an extra hour of 2020 may not be anything anyone wants.)We are now officially back on "real time" and celebratingDía de Muertos, and/or All Saints Day, take your pick.Daylight Saving Time returns on March 14, 2021, for those craving brighter evenings. If you haven't yet voted in the upcoming election, there are plenty of options still available. From now until Monday, you can vote at any Early Voting location in the city. The hours are 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday, and8:30am to 7pm on Monday. All locations are listed here; the ones closest to Uptown are:Mather High School, 5835 North LincolnInterAmerican School, 851 West WavelandTruman College, 1145 West WilsonWelles Park, 2333 West SunnysideBroadway Armory, 5917 North BroadwayNew Field Elementary School, 1707 West MorseWarren Park, 6601 North WesternIf you have a Mail-In Ballot, your best bet is to bring it to a dropbox anytime up to and including Tuesday. There are dropboxes at each Early Voting location (you won't have to wait in line, you can just drop it off). There's also a dropbox inside the Bezazian Library, 1226 West Ainslie (open Saturday and Monday during library hours), and on Election Day only, 6am-7pm, at Wrigley Field (at the Gallagher Way Gate, on Clark). If you're waiting to vote on Election Day, which is Tuesday, November 3rd, you must do so at your precinct's polling place between 6am and 7pm. Or you can go to the United Center (1901 West Madison), which is a new thing, Election Day only.Closing with a quote from the late, great John Lewis:"The vote is precious. It's almost sacred, so go out and vote like you never voted before."4530 N. Beacon (Loopnet)We've received a few inquiries as to what was taking place at 4530 N. Beacon, which is currently undergoing interior construction. 4530 is one of the hidden gems of Sheridan Park, a building that was likely beautiful when built but fell on hard times.Neighbors might recall that this was formerly the Methodist Youth Services building back in the early 2000s. Since that time, the building has functioned as storage for the neighboring rehab center and we grew accustomed to having the building empty. From chatter on local block club pages, it appears there had been at least one proposal to buy the building, demolish it, and replace it with a multi-unit building. It appearsBeacon Block Club denied the proposal, and the contingent sale fell through. The building then remained vacant waiting for a new owner.4530 finally sold in August, however, for $680,000, and we have been watching for what's next.According to new building permits, we now know that a daycare center is planned to fill the building. From the permits, the structure will be completely rehabbed and a new metal deck and stairs will be added to the rear.As soon as we know the daycare operator, we will update the post. We are very pleased that the building has been saved, and especially pleased to have another daycare option for local parents. The City of Chicago recently passed a resolution declaring October 31 as "Fiesta Mexicana Day."To celebrate, a small socially-distanced group will gather at 4806 N. Broadway on October 31 at noon to receive a copy of the resolution from Ald. James Cappleman and Sean Tenner.Fiesta Mexicana is proud to be recognized by the city for its 41 years of service to the Uptown community as well as being female owned operated.Tania D Agostino, as president of Fiesta Mexicana Restaurant, will receive the honor for the family and staff. The family will also speak to the challenges facing small businesses and restaurants. Additional information on community partnerships with NeighborFoodMeals, Saint Mary s of the Lake and Lakeview Pantry will be shared. With USPS operations being slowed down at the instruction of the Postmaster General, and millions of mail-in ballots going through the system this week, voters are being advised to use dropboxes instead of mailboxes for their mail-in ballots to ensure they arrive on time. All early voting sites in Chicago have dropboxes, which can be used through Election Day, November 3rd. That includes Truman College in Uptown. There are several libraries that have supervised dropboxes as well, including Bezazian in Uptown, located at Magnolia and Ainslie. Library dropboxes are NOT available on Election Day, but will be accepting ballots through Monday.A complete list of all ballot dropboxes is here.Be sure to vote!photos by Bill BiedermanLast night, neighbors were treated to a socially-distanced laser light show on Sunnyside Mall presented by Coherent Designs. The 20 minute laser show was set to scary Halloween tunes and repeated throughout the evening. Sunnyside Mall runs along Sunnyside from Beacon Street to Magnolia Avenue. Our thanks to neighbor Bill Biederman for capturing the fun event and of course to Will Kent of Coherent Designs and the Sunnyside Mall Committee. Neighbors interested in following events on Sunnyside Mall or getting more involved can visit the Facebook page.MCZ's 4511 N. Clark (2RZ Architecture)The current one story retail spaces at 4511 N. ClarkMCZ Development's proposal to replace a nondescript one-story retail building with a modern residential building (with ground-floor retail) was approved Wednesday evening by the 46th Ward Zoning Development Committee. The zoom meeting ran for nearly 3 1/2 hours but in the end, committee members voted to approve the development with a vote of 15 in favor, 7 against with Uptown United abstaining. The proposal had already received the approval of Clark Street Neighbors Block Club, who met with the developer and submitted feedback regarding increased outdoor space and a reorganized mix of studios, one- and two-bedroom units. The developer made the requested changes to the proposal. The retail on this stretch of Clark has been in decline for years, and we expect that this development (and others) will bring some much-needed life to Clark. Also interesting to note that 4547 N. Clark is undergoing a rehab and we are excited to see what's to come for 4537 N. Clark, currently demolished and scheduled to be replaced with a new retail building. We expect this stretch of Clark will be unrecognizable in a few years, and businesses up and down Clark are certain to benefit from a new influx of residents.Everyone, including people giving out candy, must wear a face covering. For those homes giving out candy, leave a light on or put a sign up in your window indicating that your home is participating in safe trick-or-treating.Maintain social distancing and have hand sanitizer available.Keep it moving don t congregate in front of one stoop or on the sidewalk.Only eat candy after thorough hand washing after returning home.No haunted houses, due to their potential germ-spreading.Keep trick-or-treating crews small, specifically six people or fewer. Sticking to members of your household or quarantine bubble is recommended. No house parties.Buena Park Neighbors will be onsite on Saturday, October 31st from 5-8pm on Kenmore (between Irving Park and Montrose) to help maintain one-way traffic and encourage masks for all Trick-or-Treaters. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete this form and return by Friday, October 23rd.We will also still hold our annual Halloween Decorating Contest and will award a prize to the Best Decorated House on Kenmore!
