When Treasurer Michael Frerichs Thinks Aloud, His Fellow State Democrats Suffer It's well-known that the Illinois House Republicans (along with pretty much all Illinois Republicans) are using House Speaker Michael Madigan's bad reputation to bludgeon their Democratic opponents. Speaker Madigan has been enormously unpopular in Illinois. It's probably worse now because he's been in the news so much during the long federal investigation into ComEd and the company's resulting deferred-prosecution agreement with the U.S. Attorney in Chicago. Special Committee Will Call Witnesses to Determine If Madigan Should Undergo Disciplinary Proceedings During both the impeachment proceedings against Governor Rod Blagojevich and the disciplinary proceedings that led to the expulsion of State Representative Derrick Smith (D-Chicago), the Illinois House was able to call witnesses. But because of ongoing federal investigations in both instances, the U.S. Attorney limited what some of those witnesses could be asked. The 21 winning entities submitted well over 300 applications for those 75 licenses, which has forced a tie-breaking round. “The Rocky Horror Show,” October 3 through 31 If Halloween is approaching, it must be time for that annual theatrical command: “Let's do the 'Time Warp' again!” Consequently, the Circa '21 Speakeasy will stage its fifth-annual presentation of the cult-musical smash The Rocky Horror Show from October 3 through 31, treating audiences to live performances of classic songs in this nutty, interactive experience. Radio Performance: “An Enemy of the People,” October 2 through 11 An 1882 stage classic that the New York Times, in 2018, called “suddenly as timely as a tweet,” Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People (adapted by Tom Isbell) will be presented in radio-play format – and on radio station KALA 88.5 FM – by the St. Ambrose University theatre department October 2 through 11, its tale of a fight against injustice perhaps even more relevant now than it was in the 19th century. Dark Family, We All Fall Down and Coronaroma From a thematic perspective, stalwart free-form rock weirdos Dark Family from Moline seem to have taken the COVID-19 pandemic to heart, dropping two albums in mid-September that seem to float within a more morbid, albeit probably tongue-and-cheek, virus-type mood. The cover of We All Fall Down (you know, like, a “Ring Around the Rosie” plague reference) bears an unsettling collage of children crying, while the sister album Coronaroma carries the plague right there in the title. Virtual Concerts: Joseph s “All the Songs We ve Ever Played,” October 8 through 10 Praised by Paste magazine for their “honest words and genetically perfected harmonies,” the sibling pop/folk musicians of Joseph celebrate their repertoire through a trio of livestreamed concert events co-sponsored by Iowa City's Englert Theatre, the October 8 through 10 All the Songs We've Ever Played series boasting one night each for each of the band's three albums to date. “We Just Can t Stop Evolving”: The Live Adventures of Giallows, 2019 COVID-19 concerns, venue closings, and a near-total wipeout of legitimate live music has forced most bands to adjust their plans and change their approach in 2020. But even before the music world was thrown into disarray, Davenport's Giallows were already changing, arranging, and adjusting, seemingly at random but ultimately by design. Sunshrine, Sunshrine Moline-based indie rock crew Sunshrine whip up a heady cocktail of garage-rock tunes, psychedelic-rock excursions, and amorphous collage pieces, all frosted with a sheen of immaculate, Beatles-esque pop production for their self-titled LP Sunshrine. Virtual PASS Concert: John Patti, October 15 In lieu of hosting in-person events for its fall presentations in the annual program PASS (Performing Arts Signature Series), Quad City Arts invites music lovers, on October 15, to a special virtual dinner party and concert with gifted steel-pan drummer John Patti, an at-home experience featuring a performance by the previous 2017 Visiting Artist recorded specifically for Quad City Arts patrons. Party with a Purpose: “The Boys in the Band” Despite the bitchiness and anguish inherent in the material, Netflix's new streaming version of The Boys in the Band is one of the very few releases of the last six months that feels absolutely suffused with joy. You won't necessarily find it in the characters, and certainly not in most of the things they say and do. But as a filmed reunion for the cast and director of Broadway's 2018 Tony Award winner – a revival of playwright Matt Crowley's iconic examination of urban gay life in 1968 – there's so much love baked into the presentation that you might find yourself grinning even when situations are at their most dire, and they frequently are. Saints and Sinners: “Infidel” and “The Devil All the Time” No matter how many Thin Red Lines or Person of Interests Jim Caviezel makes, he's always going to be identified as He Who Was Jesus in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ – which makes his casting in this political thriller so on-the-nose it may as well be a nostril. Love on the Rocks, Love on the Walls: “The Broken Hearts Gallery” and “I m Thinking of Ending Things” As contemporary romantic comedies go, The Broken Hearts Gallery is like something you'd create from a kit. The instructions are easy to follow, every expected piece is dutifully included, and there's no veering from the manual – what you wind up getting looks remarkably similar to what's pictured on the box. (Or, in this case, the poster.) But a pandemic-era lack of cineplex options can make you inordinately grateful for simple, much-appreciated qualities such as charm and wit and personality, all of which writer/director Natalie Krinsky's debut feature has in abundance. “New American Scene: Recent Acquisitions to the Figge Collection,” October 10 through January 3 Natural depictions of American subjects will soon be on glorious display at the Figge Art Museum, as the Davenport venue showcases noted 20th-century artists and their timeless works in New American Scene: Recent Acquisitions to the Figge Collection, the latest Gildehaus Gallery exhibition on view from October 10 through January 3. Day of the Dead Catrinas, October 20 through November 3 On display in celebration of the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, Davenport's Figge Art Museum will showcase larger-than-life Catrinas – iconic skeletal images commemorating the event – throughout the venue from October 20 through November 3, along with a Day of the Dead altar that will be on view in the Quad City Bank Trust Grand Lobby. “Matthew Boonstra and Alan Pocaro: SIGNALS” and “Elizabeth Powell: Original Prints,” August 21 through October 9 A fascinating collection of sculptures, prints, and works on paper by a trio of Midwestern artists can be viewed in the latest joint exhibition at the Quad City Arts Center, with the Rock Island venue, from August 21 through October 9, showcasing new works in the exhibits SIGNALS by Matthew Boonstra and Alan Pocaro and Original Prints by Elizabeth Powell. “Nobel Peace Prize Collection: Peace Starts Within,” August 28 through October 28 Some of the greatest and most beloved figures in world history will soon be celebrated at the Beréskin Gallery Art Academy, with the Bettendorf venue, from August 28 through October 28, showcasing portraits by internationally recognized artist Cecile Houel in Nobel Peace Prize Collection: Peace Starts Within, a new exhibition co-sponsored by Quad Cities radio station WVIK. “Paint the River: Fourth-Annual Plein Air Paint Out,” October 2 through 30 Outdoor views of Bettendorf will soon be admired and enjoyed in the great indoors of a Bettendorf venue, with the Beréskin Gallery Art Academy, from October 2 through 30, housing its new exhibition Paint the River: Fourth-Annual Plein Air Paint Out – a collection of works by local artists all created outside, and all executed on subject matter set within the boundaries of Bettendorf.
