The current chapel was built in 1899 with the baptistry an integral part of the full emmersion baptism that is a part of baptist practices. The word ‘baptise’ means to completely dip something under water, in the same way that you would with a sheep dip, and the practice of baptism derives from a passage in the bible, Mark 16:16, He who has believed and has been submerged in water shall be saved . It is a symbolic washing away of previous sins and the start of a new life as part of the church. Before the current chapel was built, there was an earlier chapel erected in 1764 which did not have a baptistry until subscriptions paid for one to be built in their fold in 1819. This piece from the history of the Birchcliffe Baptist Church published in 1899 shows how popular the practice of full emmersion was. Previous to 1819, it had been the rule to perform the ceremony of Baptism in any of the running streams of the locality. Fervent were they in those days! Good old soldiers of Christ! One candidate being so desirous of joining the happy band of Jehovah s followers, that, though seeing the river in which she should be immersed frozen over, she bravely broke the ice around her, and thus entered the fold. If you would like to have a look at the baptistry yourself, please look out for the next Pennine Heritage and Birchcliffe Centre open day.Pennine Heritage Community SurveyThe survey is now closed. Thank you to everyone who responded.Congratulations to the 3 lucky people drawn from our recent survey who win a print from the Pennine Horizons Digital Archive. They are Raj Ladwa, Sue Fenton and Lisa Graydon. That s a job well done! Enjoy choosing your prints folks! We are now able to share the fascinating End of the Roll film about the life and work of pioneering Hebden Bridge photgrapher Alice Longstaff produced recently in partnership with the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival.Alice Longstaff is a remarkable figure in photography. Her career is one of the longest in photographic history, starting in 1921 when she was 14 and continuing until her death in 1992 aged 85. An archive of her photographs and negatives is now cared for by Pennine Heritage at the Birchcliffe Centre.Incredibly, Alice’s photographs are not widely known, even within the photography communities. Very limited selections of photographs were exhibited by Pennine Heritage, as part of last years Hebden Bridge Arts Festival (‘The Lost Negatives’) and long term plans are in place to create a major exhibition and book. In the meantime, volunteers are still uncovering exciting, previously unseen photographs from the vast holdings in the archive, creating a growing body of work and knowledge about Alice’s practice and the history of her subjects and place. As interest in photographic history shift towards the vernacular, documentary testimony and the real, this film will mark a particular moment in the history of the development of the archive, and will celebrate Alice’s talent and photographic eye.The film is narrated by Ian McMillan and produced by Greg Hobson and Pete Rush, in partnership with Pennine Heritage Ltd, the Pennine Horizons Digital Archive and Hebden Bridge Arts Festival.See more of Alice s photographs HERELloyds Banking volunteers working hard at the Birchcliffe CentreA massive thank you to Annis Khalifa and his team from Lloyds Banking who spent yesterday volunteering at the Birchcliffe Centre. Their hard work in the grounds and building was much appreciated !The Open Studios weekend is a great opportunity to visit local artists and craftspeople in Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, Heptonstall and Mytholmroyd. This year over 90 artists will be opening their studios and homes. Browse at your leisure, purchase original work direct from established and new talent from this flourishing creative community. Look out for our magenta signs at each of the venues. Admission is free!As part of the open studio’s weekend, Harriet Quilty and Jo Gornall are hosting a musical happening and would like you to join us on Saturday, 6th July at Birchcliffe Centre from 3pm. There will be booze aplenty, great conversation and amazing visual stimulation to feast your eyes upon. On top of all this, there are live acoustics by Inbetween Music – Andrew Daley and Steve Lacey-Marsden. They look forward to entertaining you with clarinet, mandola and probably a few other instruments as well. They love a good tune and have built up a great collection from around the world, some old, some new. Is it folk? Is it jazz? Is it something else? Who cares, it’s going to sound amazing!Harriet Quilty and Josephine Gornall’s art will be available at Phinefibre studio, Birchcliffe Centre, throughout the event. Tea, biscuits and a warm welcome to greet you!Hebden Bridge OPEN GARDENSSATURDAY 6TH JULY AND SUNDAY 7TH JULY 2019The Birchcliffe Centre will be participating again in Hebden Bridge Open Gardens 2019. Made possible by money raised from National Lottery players, the grant will fund our Resilient Future Project. Pennine Heritage manages the Birchcliffe Centre and Hostel in Hebden Bridge and works to promote and conserve the heritage of the Upper Calder Valley and the wider South Pennines. This includes a major historical photographic archive of over 40,000 images dating back to the mid 19th century. This year we celebrate our 40th anniversary, the Resilient Future Project aims to ensure that we build on that foundation, to make an ever stronger contribution to celebrating and recording the heritage of our communities in the years ahead. The project will produce a 5 year Business Plan for the charity, including a detailed technical programme to restore and maintain the Birchcliffe Centre, a new community marketing campaign to get local groups, businesses, residents and visitors more involved in the future use of the Centre and  expert advice to improve our working arrangements. This will increase our income to fund more heritage work in the future. Finally we will invest part of the grant in supporting our volunteers who manage the Pennine Heritage Digital Archive and helping them to prepare an exciting new exhibition drawing on our historic photographic collection.Commenting on the award the Chair of Pennine Heritage, Judith Schofield, said: “We are privileged to receive this award thanks to National Lottery players. It comes at an important time of change for the charity and will help us to meet the challenges and opportunities we face in the years ahead.”About The National Lottery Heritage FundUsing money raised by the National Lottery we inspire, lead and resource the UK’s heritage to create positive and lasting change for people and communities, now and in the future.Follow @HeritageFundUK on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and use #NationalLotteryHeritageFundInternational Women’s Day CelebrationSaturday 9th March 2019  2.00pm to 4.00pmCelebrate International Womens Day at Birchcliffe Centre at 2.00pm till 4.00pm on the 9th of March Saturday with the Annapurna Dance Company.
