During the COVID-19 crisis, we've doubled down on content, bringing readers service-oriented news you can use. We need your help – NOW – to continue this work. Please consider making a one time or sustaining donation to Nyack News And Views. Thank You! by Bruce LevineThe sale of the Nyack College property to a Hasidic girls school has created fear among many residents. I have fought overdevelopment in Ramapo, including winning the case against the proposed development of Patrick Farm, and can say that the sale of one school to another is not to be feared. At least, that is, provided that residents understand the planning and zoning process and the limits of, and opportunities for, local residents to fully participate in it. Just in time for holiday shopping, Rockland Center for the Arts (RoCA) is holding its annual Affordable Art Pottery Bazaar on Sat, Dec 5 and continuing through Wed, Dec 23, 2020 with beautiful hand-crafted jewelry, ceramics ready for home use, paintings, holiday ornaments, and more. And if you don’t want to go out to shop, this year RoCA will also feature items from the Bazaar on their website. Order from the site and it will be packed up and ready for you to pick up, or delivered to you in the parking lot.In Gallery One, Walter Cain’s exhibit, wREath, is a sampling of holiday decorations made for his home in Piermont. These wREaths rescue materials from burial in a landfill and give them alternative lives in a place of honor on the front door. The exhibit also runs from Sat, Dec 5 and continues through Wed, Dec 23, 2020. by Mike HaysElectricity was in the air on Friday night July 8, 1887. The full moon paled by comparison. Villagers celebrated. Bands paraded through the streets. Fireworks were launched.  Politicians made speeches. Houses glowed. An elaborate celebration dinner was held at the largest hotel in town. Across the river, Westchester residents envied Nyack’s big city lights. We take nighttime lights for granted now (except when the power goes out) but they were a huge deal 133 years ago. Our village nights were changed forever. by Evie TolandWild Earth is a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 that works to empower youth in the New Paltz and Kingston area through nature-based programming. From their perspective, nature connection is not just about getting kids outside. It s about teaching youth how to resolve conflict in healthy ways; finding each child s unique gifts and encouraging authentic self-expression; understanding and fighting racism and inequality; acknowledging the history of displacement and oppression of indigenous peoples; and providing opportunities for children to develop a deep love for nature. All of these skills are required if the next generation is going to heal our complex, intersectional, dynamic ecological crisis. If that all sounds like a tall order, well, it is. But Wild Earth is finding that it can be done effectively and meaningfully, even if it s just during a twenty minute school recess. Here, Gonzalez explains how.  by Bill BatsonFor over 30 years, Hickory Dickory Dock has welcomed visitors into their European Advent themed interior. Now, they ve turned their shop inside out, offering handcrafted collectables as well as the work of local artisans under tents festooned with lights. This week in the villages: South Nyack will hold a Dissolution Workshop in preparation for the Dec 17 public vote. ArtWalk has been a Nyack tradition since 2006, turning local businesses into mini art galleries each Father s Day weekend. Although the 2020 event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, event founder Paulette Ross will present a virtual ArtWalk Retrospective online at 7p on Thursday night, December 3. Due to COVID, we had to pivot and could not let the year go by without producing an event, says Ross.Join the ArtWalk poster artists for a live panel discussion on Thurs Dec 3 at 7p as they look back over the past 14 years of Nyack ArtWalk. I used to sit on the rocks down there and he would just be painting,” Ursula D’Auria, a member of Edward Hopper House s Visitor Services tells me.In the early Hopper sketch from the Whitney’s archive included in this Dispatch, we see Hopper creating what seems to be one of his first river scenes. by Dave ZornowToday is Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year. Which begs the question, Says who? Turns out, no one really knows. Although you have to give a lot of credit to retailers and their publicists for making it a real holiday at least as far as sellers and shoppers are concerned. by Mike HaysFor the last 15 years, Marydell Faith and Life Center, located at 640 N. Midland Ave. just beneath Hook Mountain, has held a special holiday lighting of the Tree of Peace and Light to celebrate world peace and to commemorate the lives of those who have been lost. Friends of Marydell gather for a special program of remembrance and peace, celebrating and sharing together in song, music, reflections, and peace prayers from all religions. The celebration would end after sunset with the lighting of a live tree. A candlelit walk leads to the tree. However, as with many events this year, it is not possible to safely gather together even at a time when our need for hope is greatest.  The loss of fellowship and needed donations was so heartrending that a decision was made to offer the program virtually starting at 5:30p on December 5.Nyack People Places, a weekly series that features photos and profiles of citizens and scenes near Nyack, NY, is brought to you by Sun River Health and Weld Realty.
