How MICHR is Helping Researchers Battle COVID-19 MICHR is taking important steps to aid researchers in the battle against COVID-19. Dr. Byrd is part of a multi-site study that is evaluating whether continuing medication versus discontinuing common blood pressure medications (ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers) at time of hospitalization for COVID-19 makes a difference in how people recover and respond to treatment, focusing on two of the most common blood pressure treatments in the U.S. MICHR’s unique participant recruitment site has received national recognition and attention across the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) consortium. UMHealthResearch is now being deployed across the country at half a dozen other CTSA programs in Illinois and Florida, with more expressing interest as the word spreads about its unique design and interface. The Expanded Acccess process is pretty complicated, requiring communications with the FDA, the University institutional review board, the pharmaceutical company, and lots of documentation. Early in the COVID-19 epidemic, I worked with the TEAMSS staff to obtain remdesivir for some of our first patients at Michigan Medicine. All I had to do was decide on the drug and they pretty much took care of the rest. They were available after hours and on weekends. They ‘made it happen.’ I was finding research funding options to be very complicated and confusing, until I stumbled upon the MICHR webpage… cue ray of light and angels singing.
