The Oxford component of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) is a prospective cohort of 65,000 men and women living in the UK, many of whom are vegetarian.The main objective of the study is to examine how diet influences the risk of cancer, particularly for the most common types of cancer in Britain, as well as other chronic diseases. The study began in 1993 and since then a great deal of important research has been published from EPIC-Oxford and its collaboration with other EPIC centres in Europe. In 2015 EPIC-Oxford was awarded a new grant by the Medical Research Council titled “Health of Vegetarians”. This research will be a major focus of our work over the next five years, and will include analyses of the relationships of vegetarian and vegan diets with the risk for heart disease, strokes, bone fractures, arthritis and various disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract. We will also continue our work on diet and cancer risk, which is supported by Cancer Research UK.The EPIC-Oxford study becomes even more valuable for understanding the long-term effects of diet on health as time goes on and the continued support of participants in this important study is vital for its continuing success.Our Privacy Notice can be accessed hereEPIC Newsletter 2019 Here is our new EPIC-Oxford Newsletter showing our progress over the past couple of years which includes some examples of published papers.Also we have now established a participant panel for the EPIC-Oxford study, the EPIC-Oxford Participant Panel. This panel consists of a group of existing participants who meet with the EPIC team via video conference at least once a year. Their role is to provide the study with advice and guidance on our research plans and findings. The first online meeting took place this September.We would like to expand the number of volunteers on this panel so if you would like to volunteer or wish to know more about the panel, please email us at queries@epic-oxford.org for further information.
