Love Learning.Make Magic.We offer learners aged 14 to 19 a different kind of education to mainstream secondary provision. As the industry school specialising in creative media arts, performance and production technologies, alongside our vital core offer in English, Maths and Science, we equip our learners to be credible and successful within the creative and cultural industries such as television, film, theatre and digital media productions. These continue to be bizarre times. Ordinarily I would be welcoming all our new prospective students into school for an induction day - a chance to meet us and each other and familiarise themselves with our campus and facilities. Sadly due to lockdown, we can not offer this so our induction needs to be ‘virtual’… Exciting times… I have been longing to write this blog for over two years! As many of you know, Elstree UTC has been on a mission to establish itself as a leading school for the provision of specialist training and education for the creative and cultural arts… Following my blog post last Friday where I reflected on Raymond William’s ‘Resources of Hope’ and Riz Ahmed’s speech to parliament, a friend and colleague sent me this booklet entitled ‘Strength and Power: The Resource For Black Students’. I find it to be exactly what Raymond Williams was calling for - a ‘resource of hope’… 2020 is truly an extraordinary, and traumatic, year. We’ve had extinction rebellion and the mass demonstrations around the dangers of climate change, we’ve officially left the European Union following a highly divisive national debate, we’re in the throws of a global health pandemic and impending economic and unemployment crisis… What and AMAZING topic for assembly this week - ‘Untold Stories’. Where do I even begin… I am a lover and teller of stories, I work in a creative media and production school whose primary purpose is to tell stories. We are sponsored and partnered by one of the greatest factories of storytelling in the world - Elstree Film Studios… My assembly this week would have been on the theme of COMMUNITY... So I have made you a vlog assembly on youtube. We are really missing you all. Elstree UTC remains a strong and supportive community during this time of physical distancing and national crisis. Make sure that you are remembering to connect online… I made a small video featuring a few faces of the staff here who love you. We know who you are and who you have become and are becoming… your time with us HAS been worthwhile. The relationships and the learning still counts for EVERYTHING. We will celebrate together on the other side of all this physical distancing and self isolation… as a thank you to all our community of staff and students, and in recognition of the very considerable achievement of being formally recognised by Ofsted as a GOOD school, we got everyone a lego brick. It is of course a token - a symbolic gift which says you are a piece to this whole. You have a part in what we are building together… A fair amount of work has gone into identifying the learning 'sweet spot' - that is to say the optimal condition for deepest and fasted learning. What are the conditions that make for the best learning and fastest progress. According to TeachWire, the answer is when you are 20% safe and 80% taking a risk… Especially interesting for us at EUTC. In our fairly small creative college, which specialises in 'hands on', project-based learning in digital media arts, performance and production technology, this is a real issue for us and one that speaks directly to our vision and core purpose… I am both elated and dismayed today - elated by the wonder and reverie of a great exhibition but dismayed because, while I was sharing my appreciation of the artworks with parents, students, governors and industry partners, a parent from our wonderful 'Friends of Elstree' PTA group brought yesterday's article from The Daily Mirror to my attention… The intricacies and tiny details which give the Hogwarts world a sense of reality and truth were often breath taking. For example, when I saw Professor Snape's potions classroom, I was amazed to see that the insides of all the text books have actually been designed and printed (even though they are not seen on camera)… Students have been voting for which successful media industry practitioner they want to name as their studio icon. The short list was extensive including Great British Makeup artists like Jenny Shircore, Cinematographers like Laurie Rose, Graphic designers like Paul McNeill, Game designers like Jenny Curry and Filmmakers like Hitchcock… The 'golden era' of the Hollywood Studio System has long passed but next week marks the launch of our own EUTC Studio System. It's aim is to bring a strength and clarity to the way we support our learners. In other schools and colleges, they may talk about 'houses' but we are Elstree UTC so we're going for studios… I was moved by this piece, enough to buy it for our staffroom. A number of times last year, it was important to hold on to what we were doing, to stay faithful to the watering and feeding and weeding even when we could not yet see the plant. We believed in the potential of Elstree UTC and believed that this would be the year of growth and improvement. We cared for our seedling and encouraged all of our students to do more ground work… BYOD means that, while we will continue to provide the high level industry and specialist technology which is often very expensive, we will also use high quality WiFi to make cloud based software available for students and staff with their own devices…Opening HoursMonday - ThursdayOpen at 7:30 am.
