MDIs contribute to nearly 4% of the entire NHS carbon footprint and about 25% of the General Practice prescribing carbon footprint. Dry Powder Inhalers (DPIs) are an alternative that do not contain a propellant and have a small fraction of the carbon footprint of MDIs. The most commonly used inhaler in the UK has a carbon footprint of 28kg per inhaler. That s the same as driving 175miles in a car. DPIs on the other hand typically have a carbon footprint of less than 1kg, that s only a 4 mile drive! If you would like to discuss switching your current inhaler(s) to a more environmentally friendly alterative, please get in contact with the surgery. We would also like to ask our patients to return all used inhalers to our dispensary or a pharmacy for safe disposal. They should not be put into household waste as even after the inhaler is empty it still contains significant amounts of these environmentally damaging gases. I joined the practice on completion of my GP training in York and feel lucky to have lived and worked in such a beautiful area and worked with a supportive team dedicated to delivering high quality healthcare to our patients over all these years.I am also grateful for the support of the community and patients, many of whom I have got to know as individuals as well as patients. Their frequent appreciative words and acts of kindness have meant a lot to me in what is not always an easy job. I have greatly valued the continuity of care that we have strived to achieve and am pleased that the practice continues to recognise its importance. 1991 2021We have some excellent new recruits at the practice (doctors, nurses and support staff) to add to those who, like me, have been there many years. I know that I am leaving the practice in capable hands.I am sad that the Covid pandemic has so disrupted our way of working that I will not see many patients in person before I go.
