Sharper Iron: In the Iron Skillet

Tuesday, August 21, 2012 SI Please refer to the Revised and Expanded version of this article at my primary blog In Defense of the Gospel.

Sharper Iron (SI) is infamous for a history of castigating and besmirching Fundamentalism at virtually any opportunity. SI has never posted and, therefore, cannot produce even one article from its Front Page that is thoroughly positive on Fundamentalism and uplifting for the fundamentalist. SI has never allowed for a blog, that is unapologetically positive toward Fundamentalism, to appear in its Blogroll. SI never passes on an opportunity to heap lavish praise and run interference on behalf of the so-called conservative evangelicalism, its star personalities and conferences.

SIs leadership beginning with Aaron Blumer to Jim Peet, Joel Tetreau, Joe Roof, Larry Rogier, Susan R, JayC and a small, but aggressive pack of vocal SI members historically gang-tackle any participant who tries to present an apologetic for Fundamentalist concerns or take on the doctrinal aberrations, ecumenical compromises, cultural relativism and worldliness of the conservative evangelicals. SI is a willing participant in and a conduit for the influences of the new wave of non-separatistevangelicals in and around fundamental circles. SIs double standards, bias and favoritism is obvious to any objective observer.

And SI cant figure out why they have alienated and driven off almost every person who might participate on behalf of a truly good and balanced Fundamentalism?
For over two months it has been widely known that Dr. Matt Olson and Northland International University (NIU) lauded a Charismatic Church. On July 2, 2012 Matt Olson from his personal blog posted Confidence in the Next Generation. In the article Olson stated, I have great confidence in this next generation. They get what matters most. This was evidenced in my visit Sunday to Grace Bible Church in Philadelphia

What is the Crux of the Controversy?
The Grace Bible Church (Philadelphia, PA) is a member of CJ Mahaneys family of Sovereign Grace Churches. It is a Charismatic Church. NIUs current Articles of Faith and doctrinal statements in its Undergraduate and Graduate Handbooks explicitly state the universitys rejection of, and opposition to the modern Charismatic movement.1 From his blog Matt Olson announced that an NIU graduate/staff member, Greg Dietrich, will be in the membership of this Charismatic church and would be on NIUs payroll. All of this has been fact checked and documented here at IDOTG, by Don Johnson at his blog (an oxgoad, eh) and the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship International (FBFI)Proclaim Defend blog.

SI once alleged that itis a fundamentalist place.... that SI is about how fundamentalists see the world.2 The story of NIU president Matt Olson praising and initiating a fellowship with a Charismatic church is highly relevant to a wide crosssection of believers in fundamentalism. So, why didnt SI carry its own report of this widely known development?

The liberal mainstream media heaps lavish praise on liberalism, but besmirches and demonizes conservatism. The mainstream media protects their liberal friends by refusing to report on and/or will censor negative stories about them. SI is no different than the liberal mainstream media when it comes to praise, bias, censorship to protect and favoritism on behalf of non-separatists in conservative evangelical circles and/or the new wave New Evangelicals circulating in fundamental circles.
SIs media style is the first cousin of liberal mainstream media bias!
For the nearly two months after publication of Matt Olsons public praise for the SGM Charismatic church nothing appeared at SI. The external pressure on SI, however, was begun through the initial blog articles of the NIU/Charismatic connection by Pastor Don Johnson in Getting What Matters Most at his blog an Oxgoad, eh?. I followed Dons article with the current on-going series of articles on Matt Olson and NIU at this blog. The presence of Don Johnsons blog article and my series alone did not move SI to bring this major doctrinal discussion to their site.

On the morning of Friday, August 31st the FBFI entered the Olson/NIU Charismatic discussion. Once the FBFIs Proclaim Defend blog published Don Johnsons Questions for Matt Olson and NIU3 SI no longer had any excuse for the stories non-appearance at its site and could not claim ignorance of the issue. Within minutes a link to the FBFIs Proclaim Defend appeared in SIs Filings, and a comment thread was opened. Predictably certain members of SIs leadership and its membership immediately gang tackled Don with impunity. SI is not about to allow for, tolerate or let go unchallenged critical commentary of a person or ministry that is pursuing the same non-separatist evangelicalism they are.

Until the Proclaim Defend article Questions for Matt Olson and NIU appeared it was purely another example of Censorship by Omission at SI. Its just that simple.

On the other hand, as fast as Matt Olson can issue statements (on the current controversy and questions) SI has those articles posted on their site post-haste. Case in point was Dr. Olsons Sept 3 article from his personal blog.4 That article was in SIs Filings before daybreak the same day. What do you suppose the chances are that SI would add to their Filings a critical review of Matt Olsons recent statements from this or Don Johnsons blog?

SIs censorship of the NIU/Charismatic issue and critical reactions to the issues was predictable. SIs subsequent media support of Matt Olsons attempts to dismiss, ignore or legitimize a serious contravention of NIUs doctrinal statements is consistent with their objective to advance non-separatist evangelicalism, advance the agenda of and protect compromising men who circulate in and around fundamental circles. SIs moderators (referees) do not provide for or guarantee an even playing field in the forum. A perusal of the Olson/NIU Filings thread of August 31st demonstrates the absurdity of any claims of unbiased moderation and fair treatment at SI.
SI has NEVER been fair to or a friend of authentic Fundamentalism!
Sharper Iron IS a pseudo-fundamentalist site!
If you do not appreciate the slant of media bias at Sharper Iron you would do well to refrain from propping up the site through your participation.

Site Publishers Addendum:
Some are asking why nothing is coming from SI contributors Kevin Bauder and Dave Doran on the NIU/Charismatic church connection. Earlier this week I read a noteworthy premise for their silence. At an oxgoad, eh Pastor Brian Ernsberger wrote,
Based upon the track record of the above-mentioned men (Bauder, Doran, Jordan, et. al.,) they have no reason to denounce what Matt Olson has said and done. These men have, to one degree or another, opened up avenues to evangelicals without much in the way of warnings. So why would they denounce a fellow who is pursuing those same avenues?

SitePublishersAppeal:Have you ever wonderedwhether or not you should be participating at SI? SIs history of itsleaderships bias, playing favorites, double standards, besmirching non-favoredpersons, fellowships and doctrines as well as badgering dissenting SI membersis indisputable. Beginning with its first site publisher and continuing throughtoday with Aaron Blumer, SI has been a platform for castigatingFundamentalism with the broad-brush and advocating on behalf of a compromising,non-separatist evangelicalism. I urge you to consider ceasing any participation at or support of the pseudo- fundamentalist Sharper Iron.2 comments: Tuesday, November 22, 2011 Does Sharper Iron Allow for the Name of Christ to be Sullied?Bob Jones University (BJU) has posted a position paper under the title, The Position of Bob Jones University Regarding the Membership of Dr. Chuck Phelps on Its Cooperating Board of Trustees.

Today we will consider excerpted portions of the BJU position statement. From these excerpts we will demonstrate a pattern of disconcerting actions of Sharper Iron (SI) site publisher Aaron Blumer, SI administrator Jim Peet and the SI team for what has been to date their allowing for and participating in an Internet lynching of a Christian brother. My commentary will follow the excerpts.
Bible-believing Christians frequently face the question of how to respond biblically to criticism when it comes at them or when it is directed toward a Christian brother. In the last few weeks, an environment has been created on the internet in which BJU is being criticized by some people unhappy with the University for having Dr. Chuck Phelps on our Cooperating Board of Trustees. Because of the increasing attention the criticism is receiving, we believe an answer is now prudent.. We believe that the biblical way to approach this information is to get all the facts before judging Dr. Phelps or his actions, including going directly to him for answers to questions. Bloggers have been quick to judge and condemn Dr. Phelps. But a biblical approach would be an attitude of forbearance toward a Christian brothernot recklessly making accusations of crime or cover up against a man of good reputation before gathering the facts. The biblical principle is to go to the person directly and get facts before reaching a judgment. Dr. Phelps has offered to talk to several of his critics and even shared his phone number, but not one has called to talk with him directly. The internet posts criticizing Dr. Phelps are a great reminder of the consequences of the negative use of social mediahow it can be used to tear down a persons reputation with little verification of fact. In conclusion, we cannot overlook the human side in all of this.
A teenage girl was rapedthis is a tragedy.
A rapist is in jailthis is justice.
A faithful pastor is being pummeled in social media and his family malignedthis is unjust.
Our God is being grieved.

(The Position of Bob Jones University Regarding the Membership of Dr. Chuck Phelps on Its Cooperating Board of Trustees)
This week I confirmed that no one from SI has ever called Dr. Phelps to ask for his take on the issues. Instead, Aaron Blumer and Jim Peet have repeatedly provided the venue, allowed for, encouraged and participated in what has often been a high tech lynching of Dr. Phelps. While certain SI site managers may have come to Dr. Phelps defense on occasion, they continue to manage a medium that is far from edifying.

Yesterday, SI opened a Filing on the BJU statement. There is no wrong in reporting a significant and newsworthy statement. The problem, however, is that the thread has been opened for what predictably would be a rehash of the same sort of innuendo and hurtful gossip SI has been allowing for many months. At the outset of the thread Aaron posted this statement.
This thread would be a really weird place to post all the old accusations again. Every possible accusation has already been made many, many times. All the reasons for and reasons against have been aired innumerable times. So whatever there might be to discuss (if anything) repeating accusations again would certainly be pointless.
Aaron Blumer is not so naïve to think that because of his statement there would be no repeat of every possible accusation, is he? At the time of this writing there are 30 comments in the thread and of course some are a rehash of the same accusations that have been aired innumerable times. BJU also came under critical attack. If Aaron were serious about holding back accusations and that repeating accusations would be pointless he would have kept the thread closed to comments or remove any that repeat accusations.

Aaron Blumer has been derelict as a Christian publisher and sinful in his approach to addressing the entire tragic situation. There has been no attitude of forbearance whatsoever. Aaron has shown no inclination of forebearance. Aaron (and Jim Peet) have repeatedly allowed for the publication of reckless accusations of crime or cover up, which as SI site publisher and owner makes him complicit in the doing of it.
Aaron Blumer and Jim Peet have been enablers of sinful gossip, hurtful innuendo and rumor mongering.
Numerous times Aaron Blumer has acted in disingenuous ways suggesting that there should be no more discussion of the matter, that threads should be closed. Yet, he and Jim Peet repeatedly would not close a thread and/or would simply open a new article/thread to allow for a continuation of calling into question the motives, intent, honesty and integrity of Dr. Phelps. SI is a primary Internet conduit for, a faithful pastorbeing pummeled in social media and his family malignedthis is unjust.

What SI has been a party to is wholly unjust. I am hopeful Aaron will have his senses awakened to what he has done again. I am hopeful that he will, this one time, set aside personal bias of his site, forget about trying to keep a struggling site afloat and instead do the right thing, which would be to pull the many instances at SI where Dr. Phelpss reputation and his family has been maligned. I am hopeful, but in reality, SI under Aaron Blumer (and Jason Janz before him) has never shown any attitude of forbearance toward or correction of injustice that SI has committed against persons, sites or institutions. Instead, SI is a culture of bias, censorship by omission and playing favorites, which is well documented.

Gods Word (1 Cor. 6:1-8) challenges us that we are not to go to court before the gentiles and lets us know that we will one day judge angels. Why is that important to our discussion? Because the open-court communication that SI allows on sensitive matters will only give way for the name of Christ to be sullied. Honestly, SI becomes another 20/20 and the participants share rumor, innuendo and gossip without consideration of the need to confront, restore or edify. How much different would the current situation facing Dr. Phelps have been had the people involved done the right thing and contacted him before contacting the press and/or going on line?

A Personal Appeal
Have you ever wondered whether or not you should be participating at SI? If ever there was ample reason to quit participating in comments threads and/or contributing to it through advertising funds this is it. This incident is just another in SIs history of its leaderships bias, playing favorites, besmirching non-favored persons, fellowships and doctrines as well as badgering dissenting SI members. Beginning with its first site publisher, Jason Janz, and continuing through today with Aaron Blumer, SI has been a platform for castigating Fundamentalism with the broad-brush and propping up a compromising, non-separatist evangelicalism. I urge you to consider ceasing from participating at or supporting the pseudo- fundamentalist Sharper Iron.

LM26 comments: Thursday, November 10, 2011 Back Into the Skillet: A Second HelpingIn September 2011 I was asked a legitimate question by a regular visitor to my primary blog, IDOTG and the Iron Skillet blog. The question appears in the article, SI, YOU LIE! The name of the man with the question is Dave. He asked,
I guess Im not sure why Aaron must produce an article 100% positive on fundamentalism or be denounced a phony fundy. This standard you seek to hold him to is simply made up.
Daves question is based on my open challenge to SI site publisher, Aaron Blumer to- produce even one front page article at SI that is thoroughly positive and uplifting toward Fundamentalism and edifying for fundamentalists. Aaron has tried, but he cannot produce even one example because there are none. Instead SI continually reaffirms its open hostility toward Fundamentalism. What follows is my reply to Dave for your consideration.

Dave: This is one reason why I am calling on Aaron to produce even one front page article that is thoroughly positive on Fundamentalism and edifying for Fundamentalists.
SI is a fundamentalist place. We welcome readers of every kind, but remember that SI is about how fundamentalists see the world.
That is what, according to Aaron Blumer, SI is about and for, Fundamentalism. Instead we get a steady barrage of articles, Filings, Forums and blogroll sites that besmirch and demonize Fundamentalism. For example the article from Steve Davis1 and the KKK inferred Filing I discuss here, and from Kevin Bauder a three part attack (on the names and legacy of Bob Jones, Jr and John R.Rice)2 and his incendiary Lets Clear on This3 article.

Aaron and his leadership, Jim Peet in particular, obviously delight in not just posting articles like that of Davis and Bauder, but searching the Internet for non and/or anti-fundamentalists cannon fodder for SI to ignite. They are finding new and novel ways to use non-fundamentalists to besmirch and castigate Fundamentalism with the broad brush. The KKK article being the latest and surely will not be the last.

BTW, do you know that Aaron offered Phil Johnsons Dead Right from 2005 referenced at SI as a positive on Fundamentalism? Large elements of that article was widely criticized by Fundamentalists as out of touch and misguided.

Is it unreasonable to ask Aaron to produce just one article from the SI front page over the last six years that was thoroughly positive on Fundamentalism? No, it is not! And he cant come up with even one, because there are none.

For those who identify with or simply appreciate the best of fundamentalism and still participate at SI I would encourage you to consider ending your active participation there. Your participation is somewhat of a lifeline for SI to continue its crusade on behalf the so-called conservative evangelicalism (ce), promoting a convergence with the star personalities and fellowships of the ce camp, and positioning against what we find to be the best of fundamentalisms history, legacy, leaders and practices today. Your participation feeds the SI threads and fuels SI moderators and certain other participants to promote pro-evangelical personalities, doctrines and agendas at the expense of fundamentalism.

I would also encourage the few current or potential advertisers who feel strongly about fundamentalism to consider this: Is Sharper Iron the best place to invest the resources God has entrusted to you? Do you want to reach and/or attract the kind of persons to your college or ministry who frequent and support SI? SI is a site that frequently allows for, promotes, and its leadership happily joins in on, the redefining, castigation and besmirching of fundamentalism. SI, furthermore, heaps lavish praise on the so-called conservative evangelicals. SI does not tolerate legitimate criticism of its star personalities, preferred doctrinal positions or fellowships. Should those kind of messages from SI be sustained by financial support from fundamentalist institutions?4 comments: Wednesday, November 2, 2011 Jim Peet: In the Jaws of a LionSI Administrator Jim Peet has a long history of bullying and berating people at SI who's opinions rub him the wrong way. He cites SI policy in selective application to give himself an advantage and silence legitimate discourse that is not favorable to him or SIs known bias and favoritism. Today at SI Jim closed a comment about Dr. R. V. Clearwaters with this comment, Not afraid to acknowledge that dead fundamentalists were not perfect! Dr. Rolland McCune replied as follows.
Jim: On principle only, not my personal fondness for RVC, what, in the name of common decency and all thats Christian, is the point of introducing Doug McLachlans first tenure at Fourth into this discussion? Because (1) knowing Doug (one of the finest and brightest students Ive had, 1st of a small handful of summas from CBTS) as well as anyone, he would eschew vigorously such an act, (2) coming from a former fundamentalist who converted to a conservative evangelical always carries extreme prejudice both in motive and content, and (3) posting a website for the cyber world to see is nonsensical. Your parting shot that dead fundamentalists were not perfect was gratuitous, inflammatory and unconscionable. If this is any kind of resemblance to the apparently newly discovered and coveted kind and gentle fundamentalism, you have discredited them and embarrassed yourself. The mean, bad, unholy ole fundys usually were not as resourceful as you. This is as kindly and gently as I can put it. Comment Here
In his first comment at SI Dr. McCune wrote, bare their teeth and draw their swords in defence and propagation of truth itself along with doing so for the innocent and defenseless.

Jim Peet, maybe you just learned what strength under control looks like. Maybe you learned a valuable lesson in humility. Well, it looks like Jim didnt learn anything. Instead Jim responded with an exclamation point laden angered reaction. Jim responded with an acerbic, acrimonious and arrogant tone. The only missing part of Jims reaction is the threat to ban and pulling the comment* so that he (Jim) could assail the author with impunity, his common course of action when he takes personal offense. (Although no telling what Jim might have said if he sent a private message to Dr. McCune.) Maybe the caliber and reputation of the author (Dr. McCune) caused Jim some restraint that is certainly not common to him as SI administrator.

Who might be counted among Kevin Bauders contemporary pugilistic and bellicose, alpha males, big boys, bullies, chieftains, etc.? Jim Peets caustic reaction to Dr. McCune qualifies him for inclusion. And there is nothing about Jim Peets teeth and sword that can be considered a defence and propagation of truth itself along with doing so for the innocent and defenseless. Bottom line, IMO Jim got his feelings hurt and instead of a careful, courteous response he let his emotions lead the way.

Site Publisher's Invitation:
If you are visiting for the first time, or the first time in a long time, I encourage you to review and read any of the other articles you will find in the right column of the Iron Skillet. There are numerous, thoroughly documented articles, that irrefutably detail SIs bias and hostility toward historic, balanced Fundamentalism, gang-tackling of participants who express even legitimate concerns and questions over SI's preferred doctrines (Calvinism and Lordship Salvation), SI's corporate favoritism toward and unqualified promotion of the star personalities of the so-called conservative evangelicalism and their fellowships.

My open challenge to SI site publisher Aaron Blumer, which he for months ignored and then in one failed attempt, still has not been able to answer satisfactorily is to produce even one article from SI's Front page, a main page article, that is 100% positive toward Fundamentalism and edifying for Fundamentalists. Aaron can't provide that example because in the 6+ years of SI's existence it has never been done.

LMNo comments: Sunday, October 9, 2011 SI: Censorship by Omission?Citizens and visitors from another planet, please pay very close attention to the opening paragraph.
Twice, in the last two days, I sent to Aaron Blumer (SI Site Publisher) and certain others connected to SI the story of Calvary Baptist Seminary (Lansdale, PA) to host New Evangelical Dr. Haddon Robinson at the March 2012 Spring Forum. I included the promotional copy from and a direct link to Calvarys website.

On Sunday I, furthermore, utilized SIs Contact Form, completed the required fields and submitted it to SI for their attention. There is no way SI can claim they were not aware of this important news item, which has been circulating in various spheres of fellowship since as early as September 24. SI gives this description About Filings:
SharperIron Filings are links to bits of news around the world and the blogosphere. The items linked to are not published by SI and do not necessarily express the opinions of anyone at SharperIron. Theyre chosen because we believe they may be of interest to SI readers. (As is customary on the Net, we do not seek permission to link to Web content.) If you have suggestions or tips for Filings items, pleaseuse the contact form and select Filings item suggestion as the category.
SI routinely publishes bits of news [from] around the world on any number of topics that may be of significant, little or nearly no interest to SI readers. The invitation of Haddon Robinson by Calvary Baptist Seminary would without question qualify as news of interest to SI readers. SI claims,
SI is a fundamentalist place. We welcome readers of every kind, but remember that SI is about how fundamentalists see the world.
Without a doubt the news from Calvary Baptist Seminary (CBS) is significant and certainly of interest to fundamentalists. SI says it is a fundamentalist place [and] about how Fundamentalists see the world. Is it?

If SI is what it claims to be and if SI offers Filings, because we believe they may be of interest to SI readers then they have no excuse for ignoring or refusing to publish the story out of Calvary Baptist Seminary in their Filings section.

I do, however, have a possible reason for why SI will not run this story. If you review their list of advertisers you will note that Calvary Baptist Seminary is among the regular advertisers at SI. CBS pays to have their ads placed in rotation at SI.

Is it possible that the site publishers decision to ignore and bury the Haddon Robinson/CBS story may be due to the fact that they accept advertising revenue form CBS? Isnt it possible that SI will not risk putting up a story of interest to readers because they fear the subsequent reaction might generate sharp criticism of Calvary? Isnt it possible that SI is practicing censorship by omission to protect a source of sorely needed revenue to keep the site viable?

I believe it is more than reasonable to believe censorship-by-omission to protect a needed source of revenue is why SI will not publish this story from Calvary Baptist Seminary.

This afternoon at my primary blog, In Defense of the Gospel I have published, Calvary Baptist Seminary (Lansdale) to Host Dr. Haddon Robinson for your consideration.

If you are visiting for the first time, or the first time in a long time, I encourage you to review and read any of the other articles you will find in the right column of the Iron Skillet. There are numerous, thoroughly documented articles that irrefutably detail SIs bias and hostility toward historic, balanced Fundamentalism and its corporate favoritism toward the so-called conservative evangelicalism, its star personalities and their fellowships.

LM

Site Publisher Addendum:
I expect SI to offer some logistical excuse for the absence of the CBS story and then, to save face, just might make some mention in Filings. For related reading see, The Invitation to Larry Pettegrew: Will Central Seminary Continue the Drift Away From Its Historic Moorings?

SI: You guys just kill me!
UPDATE:
Shazaam!!! In less than an hour, after I posted my new article on Central Seminary inviting Haddon Robinson, SI has the news in their Filings section. What happened to the 36 hours previous that they have been aware of the Calvary Baptist Seminary news? One thing you gotta like about SIs leadership: Their anti-fundamentalism bias and favoritism on behalf of evangelicalism is predictable, and they are easily manipulated with the right kind of outside pressure. Oh, and this time there is no journalistic malfeasance by SI, I told them in my email they did not have to hat tip (HT) my blog.3 comments: Monday, August 29, 2011 SI, YOU LIE!"You Lie!"Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC), yelled out You Lie! during President Obamas speech on healthcare in September of 2009.

In todays SI Filings Aaron Blumer posted the following headline that originates from an article the Filing links to,
Fundamentalism provided fertile recruiting soil for another powerful movement -- the Ku Klux Klan.
No qualifying statement, nothing. At SI, under About SI, you find this statement, SI is a fundamentalist place...This is how Fundamentalists see the world? Which is it? Is SI a Fundamentalist place, or is the site, its publisher, admins/moderators hypocrites and impostors?

The evidence of hypocrisy is overwhelming and irrefutable. From this point forward anytime Aaron Blumer, his admins or moderators suggest that SI is not hostile toward Fundamentalism, that SI is for and about fairness toward or advancing the best of historic, balanced Fundamentalism, the right response is, You Lie!

The open challenge to Aaron Blumer is still on the table. Produce even one front page article at SI that is thoroughly positive and uplifting toward Fundamentalism and edifying for fundamentalists. Aaron tried, but he cannot produce even one example because there are none. Instead this SI Filing reaffirms SIs open hostility.

I urge any persons or ministries that participate at or support SI in any way to end the relationship. Your participation perpetuates a site that is not the friend of historic, balanced Fundamentalism.

LM

Addendum: SI administrator Jim Peet acknowledged that he personally uploaded the Filings. Aaron Blumer is site publisher and therefore responsible for all SI content. Furthermore, this Filing is just one of many examples at SI of its eagerness to besmirch and castigate Fundamentalism. SI's bias, hostility and aggression toward Fundamentalism is irrefutable.
