Prayer WarriorJourney to knowing Jesus, through increased prayer and worship Reading the proverbs chapter on the virtuous wife, it suddenly struck me that all she ever seems to do is work. She is one busy bee focusing so much on her family first, her household, her servants and her businesses. She is after all a modern woman; educated, well dressed, earning her own income and well you can say that she is Ms Independent! Of course we are talking about the virtuous wife here not the good wife. The virtuous wife is described as a ‘wife of valor- in the sense of all forms of excellence’. Who can compete with that! She outshines us all in all aspects of her everyday life, her husband praises her and her children call her blessed!I have heard time and time again at kitchen parties how she is praised and put on that high peddle stall for all to see, for the new bride to see so that she can be emulated. She is the one example that has been set as standard for every wife in this world. A lot of us strive to be just like her, to have a perfect home, perfect children and a perfect husband. We get ourselves in debt trying to buy the perfect clothes, perfect furniture, to have our children in perfect schools, make sure our husbands clothes are laundered perfectly, but alas not all marriages are perfect. In fact most are far from being perfect. If all this trying of perfectionism leaves you feeling like a total failure, and mightily disgruntled at most, why then should we try and emulate the virtuous wife?And the good wife? Who is she? She is at most very ordinary. She is the everyday person, in most cases she is just a house wife, who waits for her husband to get home from work, give him his meal. Put the kids to bed at an awkward hour. She tries to get up early to prepare breakfast, get the kids ready for school, the husband up and ready for work etc. she has no ambition, is rarely well groomed. Always nags her man for money, is highly insecure about where he has been and who he has been talking. Will have children like its running out of fashion, just because she seeing the neighbor hanging napkins on the wash line. If she has a job, then she is mostly running the home alone, husband who drinks too much and cares very little for his children and she has a whole hoard of his relatives to look after…the list is endless. In the end the good wife is just ordinary, nothing special to talk about, no outstanding achievements, no praises from her husband or children! Most importantly problems are her middle name and she is over run by circumstances beyond her control. There is nothing wrong with her, she is just human!The picture of the good wife is not very pleasing that is why we all want to become the ‘virtuous wife’; she is after all the perfect picture of success! The question then I would pose is, is there such a thing as a virtuous woman? I believe the answer to that is no. Many times we confuse the virtuous wife as in representing the total package of womanhood. What about the unmarried woman, will she then be represented using the same standard as that of the ‘virtuous wife’? Shall she not receive praises for the all the work that she does even in her unmarried state? What about widows? How fair is it then to place all women in this one standard of perfectionism?Anyone can become the ‘virtuous wife’, in fact most women I know have been or still are ‘virtuous wives’. All the things that the ‘virtuous wife’ does they do them. They cook, clean, run their households, mind their maids, pick kids up from school, some are a little more ambitious than others, some run small businesses on the side, we strive to earn degrees and PhDs… We all work so hard to do all these things that the ‘virtuous wife’ does and yet we still want to look for justification and praise from our friends, relatives, husbands and our children. Praise. We get none. Still we strive to be become better at what we do, in the hopes that the men in our lives will love us more and better.In the end we are all just women, whether you are single, widow, a good wife or a virtuous wife wannabe! What we do for our families is very important, if it wasn’t we wouldn’t have proverbs 31! But the most important thing for a wife, a widow, a single lady is to be…. A woman who fears the LORD… after that is done, only then…  She shall be praised. A virtuous woman doesn’t exist; you are a work in progress. God will mould you, He will re-create you, He will chip out the roughness, He will soothe the pain, dry the tears shed in the privacy of the night, He will remove the fears that beseech you, and He will fulfill His promises towards you, only if you allow Him to.
