Eesti Keele Instituut on riigi teadus- ja arendusasutus, mille põhieesmärk on aidata kaasa eesti keele säilimisele läbi aegade. Instituudis uuritakse tänapäeva eesti keelt, eesti keele ajalugu, eesti keele murdeid ja soome-ugri sugulaskeeli. Instituut täidab mitmeid riiklikke ülesandeid: rahvuskultuurile oluliste eesti keele sõnaraamatute koostamine, avalik tasuta keelenõuanne (sh nime- ja termininõuanne), üleriigilise terminoloogiatöö koordineerimine, teenused erivajadustega inimestele (kõnetehnoloogia, viipekeele sõnastik), e-teenused keeleõppijatele (eri keeletasemetele mõeldud õppesõnaraamatud), keelearhiivide kogumine ja arendamine. Instituudi ülesanne on tagada eesti kirjakeele norm, mille seaduse järgi sätestab instituudi uusim õigekeelsussõnaraamat („Eesti kirjakeele normi rakendamise kord“, RT I, 2011, 3). Samuti on instituut määratud nimeteaduslikuks usaldusasutuseks („Nimeteadusliku usaldusasutuse määramine“, RTL 2004, 87, 1376; RTL 2005, 28, 397), kelle ülesanne on anda nimede asjus eksperdihinnanguid ning korraldada kohanimede sihtuuringuid.TAGS:ee EKI Eesti eestikeeleinstituut;eestikeel;sõnastik
