Between doing the dishes a couple times a day, washing your hands and doing all of the things you have to do around the house– it’s hard to keep your fingernails looking nice.Nail polish isn’t a good solution for me because it never lasts longer than a day before it’s chipped and ragged looking. So, a better option is to rely on essential oils for naturally pretty nails without polish. How to Use Essential Oils on Your Fingernails I start by strengthening them with a mixture of ten drops each of frankincense, lemon oil and myrrh combined with two tablespoons of Vitamin E oil. I use this mixture twice a week, or more if I’m having issues with peeling or chipping of my nails.Next, I get rid of any yellow discoloration on my nails by doing a nourishing night treatment of a half cup of jojoba oil and two drops lemon oil. To do this, just spread the mixture generously over your hands and then apply a cover overnight. I use inexpensive winter gloves that are 100% cotton for this, but a pair of socks will work, too. Finally, I encourage nail growth so that my naturally thin and sometimes brittle nails can actually grow out to an attractive length. To do this at home, just add ten drops of lemon and 20 drops of lavender to one tablespoon olive and one tablespoon jojoba carrier oils. Apply it once a day I like to use a simple glass vial and a cotton swab to apply it. Not only does this strengthen and encourage nail growth, but the smell is also really soothing and it’s an enjoyable part of a beauty routine.Essential Oils for Fingernail FungusIf you have any issues with fingernail fungus, essential oils can solve this problem as well. Lavender, orange and tea tree oils will all do the trick. Just combine two or three drops with a carrier oil and generously coat your nails twice a day. The fungus will be killed, so your problems with brittle, discolored or thick nails will be over. Make sure to continue the treatment for a week or two after the nail looks normal again, because it will help to prevent the fungus from coming back. One of the best things about this routine is the smell. Instead of the chemical smell of nail polish or acetone permeating the room, you have beautiful nails that also smell like natural, pure essential oils.Find more beauty tips in my essential oils guides these natural remedies can be used in almost any way imaginable! With love,Becki Written By Becki AndrusYou have probably heard the term “antioxidants” and know that they are good for your health, but do you know why they are so essential for health and wellness? Many research studies have been published that show the countless benefits of antioxidants, and it has become a popular topic that companies often use in their marketing to increase sales. A lot of people that I talk with have heard of antioxidants and they know that antioxidants are good for the body but they don t understand exactly what antioxidants are and why they are so essential for a healthy lifestyle. My goal with this blog post is to help you understand what antioxidants are, why we need to have antioxidants, how they will benefit you, and how to include antioxidants with your everyday habits. I m good about keeping up with laundry, so it wasn t an issue of the towel being dirty, but I noticed that some of the towels smell funny even when they are freshly cleaned (right out of the dryer). Can you relate?I found out that towels can start to smell funny over time because of the build-up of detergent and fabric softener in the fabric. This residue build-up makes the towel less absorbent, and it will start holding in the smell. So, I looked around online and found an easy solution to get rid of the smell and make my towels fresh again! Here s what you need to do:1. Run the towels through a wash cycle with HOT water and 1 cup of white vinegar no detergent!2. When the washing cycle is done, keep the towels in the machine and start it again. This time, use 1/2 cup baking soda and hot water (again, no detergent). I also like to add 10 15 drops of lemon essential oil, or any other fresh smelling essential oil.3. If you live in a warm climate and have the option, hang-dry the towels in the sun which will also help to get rid of the smell. Otherwise, use the dryer to dry the towels as normal, and presto fresh, clean towels that smell great!Note: Keep in mind that you can avoid the funky towel smell by decreasing the amount of laundry detergent in each load. I use half the recommended amount of detergent, and don t use fabric softener since it just causes build-up.Also, always make sure the towels are completely dry before they are folded and put away. Folding a wet towel is a recipe for disaster, because mildew may start to form in the damp creases of the fabric. Even if the towel is a little damp, allow it to dry completely before folding. With love,Becki Did you enjoy this blog post? Check out my Natural Cleaning Recipes ebook for more ways that you can use essential oils around the house! You probably know by now that I tend to use natural products for home and beauty, and I like to avoid chemicals. There are a few reasons for avoid these chemicals, and once you understand the harmful effects of household cleaners you will want to avoid them too! One reason is that chemicals are very harsh on sensitive skin, so if you are easily aggravated or you care for children with sensitive skin, you should have a home that is as chemical free as possible.Another reason has to do with allergies. You just never know which of the chemicals in a cleaner or spray will aggravate someone in your family. There are allergies to natural ingredients as well, but I’ve found that the store-bought cleaners have such long lists of ingredients that it ups the odds of allergic reaction by a lot. Plus, those chemicals are terrible for your health! The environmental impact of buying can after can of cleaner is also something to think about. Instead, you can make your own and reuse the bottles. For myself, a big reason that I avoid store bought cleaners is actually economic – I can make my own for pennies!Disinfecting SprayDisinfecting spray is the best example of an easy, natural cleaner. When I need to spray down my countertops or trash can, I used to grab a pressurized metal can disinfecting spray. But now I save money (and the environment) by making my own easy disinfectant with essential oil! This will work with any antimicrobial oil such as lavender, tea tree or peppermint.Just add 20 drops of essential oil. Add a teaspoon of baking soda and top the spray bottle off with water. Shake the bottle to dissolve the baking soda and then spray away.Be sure to use this within a few days and then rinse out the bottle really well. A plastic spray bottle will eventually corrode using essential oils so replace your bottles after a year, or try to find a glass one. An alternative would be to simply make a large mixture in a glass jar and apply to countertops with a towel. You’ll notice that this smell is much more pleasant than the store bought sprays, and it still comes with germ fighting power. Depending on the oil you use, there will be additional benefits that don’t come with the store bought brands. For example, peppermint will banish bugs from your kitchen, lavender will give you stress relief and tea tree will energize you. This can’t be said for store-bought sprays! With love,Becki P.S. It is not uncommon for me to talk with someone who tells me that they mentioned their essential oils to a doctor, and the doctor completely shut down the idea of natural remedies. The problem is, that if a doctor says something then it must be true, right?! Sometimes the reasons doctors tell us can be funny, so I thought that it would be humorous to put together a list of the reasons why your doctor may explain that your essential oils aren t a real treatment option. I hope that you enjoy the irony of this list!Top 10 Reasons Why Your Doctor Will Say You re Crazy For Using Essential Oils10. Essential oils won t work and if it does, the only reason you experience relief is because of the placebo effect. 9. But, there s nothing about essential oils listed in the reference books from my medical school.8. It s not possible for essential oils to provide relief so quickly (within 30 seconds), because medications usually take 15-20 minutes before you can feel the effects.7. The side effects of XYZ drug are rare and millions of people take it across the US, so it s safe to use. Essential oils haven t been tested on that many people, so you d better not risk it.6. If essential oils haven t been approved by the FDA, then they re definitely not a treatment plan to consider!5. Treating a health concern cannot be as simple as rubbing a few drops of snake oil on your body.4. Plants can t provide a real treatment option, because they haven t been chemically developed to treat the problem that you are experiencing.3. All of those natural remedies are hokey, they never actually work.2. In my experience, the ONLY way to treat your condition is with XYZ medication, there aren t any other options available.1. How can something smell so good and benefit your health at the same time?I m glad that my essentials oils smell so pleasant, I would take that smell over the sterile doctors office smell any day! Luckily, there are a few medical professionals out there who understand and implement an integrative treatment approach by using natural remedies along with modern medicine but those professionals can be hard to find.I am grateful to live in a day and age when we can have the option to use natural remedies and/or modern treatment options. Sometimes natural remedies are sufficient, sometimes modern treatments are needed as well there is a time and a place for each option, and each situation is unique and different. The fact that we have essential oils in our home for everyday first-aid care brings me a peace of mind and happiness for myself and my family.I hope that you enjoyed this funny list!
