The University of California Observatories operates two observatories: Keck, located top of Mauna Kea volcano on the big island, Hawaii, and Lick , located on Mount Hamilton, near San Jose, California.The Lick electronics lab supports the Astronomy program at University of California Observatories / Lick Observatory . We design and construct electronic and electro-mechanical devices for the new astronomical instruments used on the Lick telescopes on Mount Hamilton, and the Keck telescopes in Hawaii. We also provide technical support for these instruments.Early projects include the ESI (Echellette Spectrograph and Imager) located at Keck Observatory, the PFCAM ( Prime Focus CAMera) located on the Shane 3-Meter telescope on Mount Hamilton and the MOS (Multi-Object Spectrograph) also located on the Shane prime focus. The biggest project we've ever built here is the HIRES (HIgh Resolution Echelle Spectrometer). This spectrograph is mounted on the Keck 10 meter telescope.Our latest project is the DEIMOS (Deep Extragalactic Multi-Object Spectrograph). It was installed on the Keck II telescope in spring of 2002 and saw first light on June 3, 2002.
