New Florida Law Will Shrink Medicaid Waiting List Nearly 60,000 poor, disabled and elderly residents are on a waiting list for placement in Florida’s Medicaid managed long-term care program. But the number of people on the list will be drastically reduced in the coming months. The Legislature this year passed a law to ensure that the list only includes the names of residents who are most at risk of nursing home placement and that people with “low priority” scores will not go on the list. Read MoreOfficials in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties are talking about relaxing their mask ordinances - but decisions are still a ways off. State versus federal? Which data set nursing homes should rely on as a benchmark for coronavirus testing has been a pressing question for Florida facilities the past several weeks as they begin using rapid testing kits provided by the federal government. Over the objections of drugmakers, the Trump administration is expected within weeks to finalize its plan that would allow states to import some prescription medicines from Canada. Six states — Colorado, Florida, Maine, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Vermont — have passed laws allowing them to seek federal approval to buy drugs from Canada to give their residents access to lower-cost medicines. But industry observers say the drug importation proposal under review by the administration is squarely aimed at Florida — the most populous swing state in the November election. Trump’s support of the idea initially came at the urging of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a close Republican ally. Health experts predict a coronavirus vaccine could be approved by the end of the year, but it may take another few months before it’s distributed. We spoke with Dr. Cindy Prins, an epidemiologist at the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions, about how a rollout would work. Holly Donohue didn’t find @maskoffuf on Instagram. It’s the third straight day there have been over 140 coronavirus-related deaths reported in the state. Eighteen of the deaths occurred in the greater Tampa Bay region. The deaths were recorded by the state since Wednesday’s report, but they may have occurred days or weeks earlier.
