We look forward to returning next year. The application cycle is expected to open by November 1, 2020 for the summer 2021 program, with deadlines anticipated in early February 2021. About the Program The Amgen Scholars Program is a national program to increase research opportunities for students committed to pursuing careers in the sciences. This program provides outstanding science undergraduates with research experience and increases participants’ competitiveness as candidates for admission to prestigious graduate and professional institutions. Additionally, this program encourages participants to pursue a Ph.D. or the joint M.D./Ph.D. degree and research careers in the sciences and biotechnology. Applicants from diverse populations and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Research with world renowned faculty Participate in hands on research in a UCB faculty member’s lab Receive $4,200 stipend plus meals Obtain transferable college course credit Live in provided housing Paid round-trip travel cost Variety of social activities Access to UC Berkeley campus facilities Participate in the National Amgen Scholars Program Symposium at UCLA in July (all expenses paid) Attend Networking events with faculty, administrators, and graduate students GRE Prep Course Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (international students are ineligible; please view Amgen's international programs) Undergraduate students enrolled in four-year colleges and universities in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and other U.S. Territories Sophomores who have completed 4 quarters or 3 semesters of college, juniors, and non-graduating seniors who are returning in the fall to continue their undergraduate studies (Freshmen and students enrolled in community colleges are ineligible to apply) Cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher Interested in research and the pursuit of a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. Prior research experience preferred Previous Amgen Scholars are ineligible to apply Full-time direct participation on a research project Attend weekly seminars or workshops Meet weekly with the graduate student assistant for the program Submit preliminary and final abstracts Attend the Amgen Scholars National Symposium in July 2021 Present reserach findings in poster and oral presentations Complete Amgen Foundation and UCB Amgen Scholars Program Evaluations Application Deadline: February 3, 2021 Submit an Online Application - Open November Submit a Statement of Purpose (included in the online application) Submit requests for two letters of recommendation (name and email address of letter writer required) Upload college transcript(s) via the Online Application. Contact our program for assistance Yes, you can apply to multiple program sites. Each site has the same minimum eligibility requirements; however, other requirements and application process may vary slightly. Be sure to read each site's requirements carefully. Is there one common application form for all of the Amgen Scholars Program sites? No. Each Amgen Scholars site has its own application process. Yes, we will accept supporting documents for a short time after the deadline; however, only completed applications are reviewed. No. You should only list research experience you have obtained as an undergraduate. However, you can mention your high school research in your essay. The home page has the detailed requirements, in summary: U.S. citizen or permanent resident Enrolled in a 4-year college or university in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territory and be a sophomore, junior, or non-graduating senior who will return to school in the fall to continue your undergraduate studies Have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher No. You are ineligible to apply because you must have completed 3 semesters or 4 quarters of college before applying to the Amgen Scholars Program. No. You are ineligible to apply because you must be a US citizen or permanent resident. No. You must be returning to your undergraduate college or university in fall of 2021 to continue your studies. Yes. UC Berkeley accepts unofficial. Upload your transcript(s) as a PDF and your current transcript must include your 2019 fall grades. Study Abroad applicants may submit their fall grades later, if needed. Please do not mail, email, or fax your transcript to the program. Study Abroad applicants and those impacted by Hurricane Harvey, Irma, Maria and the California fires may submit fall grades later, if needed. Please email the program (amgenscholars@berkeley.edu) if your fall grades are not available by February 1st. Do I need to submit my transcript(s) at the same time I submit my online application? No. Transcripts can be submitted at various times including after you submit your application Visit UC Berkeley's GPA calculator and enter the units and grades for all your classes or just your science classes. For your major GPA, please calculate your GPA in classes required by your major. You will need your overall GPA and major GPA when you complete the online application. My school calculates the GPA using 5.0 scale. How do I convert my GPA to a 4.0 scale? To convert a 5.0 GPA to a 4.0 GPA, divide your cumulative 5.0 GPA by 1.25, or divide your cumulative GPA by 5 then multiply by 4. Both ways will yield the same 4.0 GPA conversions. Within your online application, you will request for the letter writer to submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf. To make this request, you will enter the names and email address of each letter writer. You can also change or add different request. Carefully follow the instructions provided within the online application. Letters from people who have experience working with you in a research setting, faculty mentors, principal investigators, professors, and teachers are preferred. Two letters from the same lab is consider as one letter (i.e. a letter from faculty member and one from your lab mentor-postdoc or graduate student you worked with in the lab) A letter from your pastor, resident advisor, music teacher, high-school teacher, or relative unless you have worked directly with one of these people conducting research is not preferred. What if my letter writer is having problems receiving the email request and/or submitting letter? Have your letter writer to check Spam/Junk mail, resend the request with your online application, and/or contact the program about this issue. Do I need to submit my letters at the same time I submit my online application? No. Letter writers can be submitted at various times including after your application is submitted and after the deadline. Applicants to the program will be notified starting March 1st and throughout the month of March. Can I request specific areas of interest and faculty labs for my summer research placement? Yes. As part of your online application, you will list your four top research areas of interest and your four top faculty members. No. You are required to participate for the entire 10 weeks except for students on a quarter system who must arrive late and participate approximately 9 weeks.
