There seem to be some competing ideas on affirmation. I have a mentor that regularly affirms those around him, setting aside intentional time to share what he sees in others and call our their good. On the other hand, I have a friend whose father—a former pastor—refuses, on principle, to give affirmations. He believes it leads to a big head and to thinking too highly of yourself.So what’s the deal with affirmation? Is it necessary, or narcissistic, to need affirmation… In our last blog, we talked about how we’re experiencing a fairly turbulent time globally. Between an escalating political climate, a global pandemic, multiple natural disasters, and social upheaval, we’ve got good reason to be feeling a little tense.It may feel new to us, but it’s not new to the Church. The bride of Christ has lived through a lot of upheaval, uncertainty, and dark times. Christ Himself has promised to be with us, regardless of what the world is experiencing… What a time to be alive, eh?We’ve not only got a global pandemic going on, fires all over, devastating hurricanes, social unrest and protests, waves of job loss, several conspiracy theories, and an asteroid headed toward earth but, to cap it all, it’s a presidential election year. Whew. I’m sure I missed a few, too.“God is our refuge and strength,an ever-present help in trouble.Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give wayand the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”Psalm 46:1-2This sure feels like an “earth give way” kind of time, doesn’t it? It can feel like the whole world is falling apart. How do we as followers of Jesus engage with this time? There’s plenty to say on this subject so we’re splitting it into two parts.TAGS:Trueface
