Description:

A playfully derisive name given to the game of Australian Rules Football by non-followers. It comes from observation that players frequently use long, high kicks through the air to pass the ball (footy, sherrin, prune, pill) to each other. Alice Springs, the third largest town in the Northern Territory. Noted for its harmony and lack of social issues. The height of fashion and style. Or used in a negative sense of someone with an unreasonably high opinion of themselves. 'Ant's pants' is used in the same way that 'bee's knees' is. Australian soldier. Anzac is an acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, originating from the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. The Anzac spirit or attitude is one of determination and courage in adversity. The name of the trophy in a test cricket competition held regularly between Australia and England. The ashes are literally the burned remains of a stump now held in the trophy (an urn). A crowd cheer, usually at an international sports event. It is a variation on the UK's Oggy Oggy Oggy chant from the 1970s. Have a go, you mug. Said to encourage someone to do something they might otherwise wuss out of. Bachelor and Spinster ball. A party for singles in the country. A pleasant escape from the up-hill slog that is farming To bail someone up is to rob them (cf. stick-up), give them a good earbashing, or physically confront them. Dig up potatoes but leave the leafy tops in place to either: disguise their removal; ensure that more spuds grow in. Something extremely interesting. Anything interesting enough to interrupt a barbecue must be a hell of a showstopper. Term of endearment. Usually used affectionately, but sometimes just used of an actual bastard. Dogged, hard-working Australian (often blue collar) who courageously carves out a meager living. An emotional trigger-word used by politicians and talkback radio presenters to manipulate those gullible enough to believe them. The geographical line that supposedly separates Darwin from the rest of the Northern Territory. It deliniates the haves (Darwin) from the have nots (those south of the Berrimah Line). A football spectator expression appealing to game administrators to stop coming down too hard on good old-fashioned brawling. A pool of water left sitting at a river bend when the water flow dries up. From the Wiradhuri (indigenous) language. An indigenous Australian. Generally this is on a similar level to how 'black' is used in the USA: fairly neutral and used by both white and black Australians. Very; extremely. British origin, but extremely important to Aussies who have made it their own. Swag, a traveller's possessions all bundled up (traditionally, in a blue blanket). Bluey can also mean luggage in a broader sense. Suburban scum. Traditionally bogan meant wearers of mullets, ugg boots, acid wash jeans, and AC/DC wife-beaters. Now the definition is much broader, to mean anyone less sophisticated, intelligent, fashionable or cultured than you. A surprise result in a sporting event, from horseracing upsets when a hot favourite is defeated. He’s a bit thick. (he can’t tell the difference between Melbourne's brightly-lit Bourke St and Christmas lights). Derogatory name for rugby because of the set-piece known as the scrum. In rugby union (and in a token way, rugby league), each team's eight forwards bind together, crunch into each other, and try to push the opposition eight backwards. This is the mechanism that creates cauliflower ears, and while bums may not actually be sniffed, a lot of nut grabbing and dirty shit happens here. Any sparsely-inhabited natural region, largely uncultivated; anywhere outside urban areas. Using the term "bush" of a thing or activity gives it a rural or country context. Bash through thick bush (vegetation) with your body, a stick, or a machete. What you do when you're on foot and the official track runs out. Also refers to rally driving your car somewhere in the bush . Block one nostril with your finger and blast the other one with both barrels (or just the one, as it were). Best done surreptitiously to avoid judgement, and into vegetation to be a good citizen. A fee restaurants might charge when people bring in their own dessert (like corkage for wine). A well-off person who hypocritically espouses left-wing beliefs while guzzling lustily on the teat of the good privileged life. To take a day off sick from work when you aren't sick at all, or only a tiny bit crook. Something that is largely illusory or exists in name only; a poor substitute or imitation. A term that was born out of a tv ad for a non-alcoholic drink. Sick (feeling crook). Also, injured (crook back), bad (crook attitude), difficult (crook footy season). A derogatory name for Rugby League. To fans of other codes, primarily Australian Rules Football, a game of Rugby League looks far too much like sweaty grappling.
