Terry Crews has come under fire for 'cosplaying as a poor person' in his new Amazon ad encouraging people to work for the online retailer, as critics accuse him of being a 'sellout' and a 'union buster.'
The cringeworthy commercial shows the 53-year-old actor dressed up in an Amazon uniform complete with an orange safety vest, mask, and gloves, while excitedly packing orders and palling around with employees at one of the company's distribution centers.
'I heard Amazon was hiring a bajillion people and thought I'd take a look for myself,' he says in the ad, which was rolled out on TikTok.
During what appears to be a leisurely lunch break, he asks a worker in a wheelchair if Amazon pays for college tuition. When she confirms the company does, he laughably replies: 'So what do you think my major should be?'
According to the Amazon website, 'eligible employees' can have up to '100 percent of tuition and fees (up to a yearly maximum)' paid for by the company to go 'towards a certificate or diploma in qualified fields of study.'
In another awkward scene in the ad, Crews' eyes light up when she sees someone driving a forklift in the warehouse.
'Wait, I get to drive a forklift?' he asks.
The commercial ends with the former NFL player touting Amazon's 'benefits,' 'paid tuition,' and 'flexible hours' while urging people to apply for the many open positions around the country.
Crews, who shared the video on his own TikTok account, has received hundreds of negative comments in response to the campaign.
Crews who has an estimated net worth of $25 million makes it seem like it's a joy to work for the e-commerce giant, which continues to face backlash over its treatment of its employees and grueling working conditions.
'Bro, I dare you to work there for a month. You would think twice about how they treat employees,' one TikTok user wrote, while another added: 'Terry no... don't support union busters.'
Others referenced claims that employees don't have time to take bathroom breaks, with one commenter asking: 'Yeah but do the benefits include bathroom breaks or nah?'
The Amazon ad has also been skewered on Twitter, where many have pointed out that the company has chosen to hire Crews for a commercial instead of paying its employees more.
'Amazon: We can't afford to pay our workers more. Also Amazon: We're going to pay Terry Crews a boatload of money to come roleplay as a poor person for a few hours,' one critic tweeted.
'This is Terry Crews cosplaying as a poor person to do an ad for union busting,' someone else added.
'Be interesting to learn how many hours every Amazon worker featured has to work to make what Terry Crews got paid for that spot,' another pointed out.
Many branded him a 'sellout' and a 'union buster' for his support of the company, which has headed off major labor unions since its founding in 1994.
The ad starring Crews was rolled out just a few weeks after it was revealed the company is hiring 150,000 workers for the holiday season.
Seasonal roles will include sign-on bonuses of up to $3,000 and, depending on shifts, an additional $3 per hour salary. The average starting salary was also increased to more than $18 an hour in September.
However, Amazon's working conditions have long been the subject of scrutiny, including reports of unsafe working conditions, too few bathroom breaks, and unmanageable productivity requirements.
Some dubbed the new commercial 'Amazon propaganda,' including one Twitter user who claimed to have worked for the company.
'I appreciate Terry Crews bringing some positivity and I can certainly appreciate that the dude is far more physically fit to do that job than I was, but as a former Amazon employee the whole paid tuition and flexible hours thing is 100% bulls**t,' he wrote.

Residents of the Atlanta area are experiencing the worst inflation among major U.S. cities, with October prices up 7.9% from a year ago -- more than double the rate in San Francisco.
The St. Louis and Phoenix metro areas also saw inflation above 7% last month, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show. The cities are above the national average of 6.2%, which itself was the fastest annual pace since 1990 in the county.
By contrast, prices in San Francisco and New York rose 3.8% of 4.3%, respectively.
October inflation data was only available for 14 major cities as of Tuesday, so its possible other metropolitan areas saw even higher inflation than Atlanta.
The numbers highlight a pandemic-era divide, with scorching inflation in regions that have attracted people during the Covid-19 crisis and more moderate increases in the East Coast and West Coast cities they fled.
Transportation costs are leading the way in Atlanta, whose residents paid 21% more for expenses including fuel and vehicles than they were a year ago, the data show. Georgias capital also saw outsize gains in the price of clothes, up 11%, as well as recreation and housing.
The nations soaring prices could pressure the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates sooner than expected, while also putting President Joe Bidens nearly $2 trillion tax-and-spending package in further jeopardy in Congress.
Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, whose potential vote on the package could be pivotal in a Senate divided 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, on Wednesday said in a tweet that the threat posed by record inflation to the American people is not transitory and is instead getting worse.

Since starting in April, Ishaan Thakur, 14, and his sister Aanya, 9, have made nearly $160,000 mining cryptocurrency.
On their first day mining, the siblings made just $3. But in the last seven months, their operation has grown substantially. In October alone, Ishaan and Aanya made $64,000. It's become a lucrative business, which they've called Flifer Technologies.
We have configured our computers to constantly scan for the most profitable coin and switch to that coin automatically, Ishaan tells CNBC Make It. Ether is the dominant coin we mine, with bitcoin and ravencoin being the second and third.
Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency by market value. Ether is the second-largest and is native to the Ethereum blockchain. And ravencoin is an altcoin amid the top 100.
The siblings, who are based in Frisco, Texas, can process 15 to 16 billion ether algorithms per second, according to Ishaan.
Even though we are now making a lot of money, we are just as proud now as we were when we only made $3 per day, since our main prize is not the money, Ishaan says. My favorite part about our experience is that we learned about a new technology.
Ishaan and Aanya hope to continue to reinvest in their business, but also use the income to save for college.

Ishaan and Aanya first learned how to mine by watching videos on YouTube and searching the internet. But the process of mining is far from easy.
Mining rigs must compete to solve complex puzzles in order to validate cryptocurrency transactions. It's not only difficult, but it can be very expensive, as it requires a lot of computer power and energy.
The siblings have nearly 200 processors, which their father Manish Raj, a former investment banker, helped fund by taking out a loan. Raj declined to disclose the exact loan amount, but the worldwide shortage of computer chips made finding equipment much more difficult and set prices at a premium.
Ishaan and Aanya have around 100 Nvidia RTX 3090s, 50 of Nvidia RTX 3070Ti, a mix of Nvidia 30-series processors and 24 specialized bitcoin mining machines. Nvidia RTX 3090 graphics cards, for example, can cost around $2,500 to $3,000 each.
We have additional cards on order, so we will be over 200 processors later this month, Ishaan says.
Ishaan built the majority of the computers, he says, which all run in parallel. Because they are all concurrently processing the same job, my homemade computers can process more graphics transactions per second than NASA can, he says. Many of my friends like to play games on their computers. Instead, I just like to build computers for fun.
Though their mining operation originated out of their home's garage, they've since moved to a data center in Dallas, Texas. It costs over $5,000 per month for the electricity bill and around $4,000 per month for technicians to monitor the rigs.
Since our school has started, we don't have time to monitor our computers in the garage. So we put all the computers at a data center, Aanya says. We use the garage only to build computers and then we send them to the data center. We have also hired technicians to monitor the computers because we have to go to school.
We only mine in our free time, Ishaan says.
Ishaan and Aanya's parents, teachers and friends are impressed with their mining business.
All of my friends read about our business on the internet, Aanya says. My friends and teachers couldn't even believe it! The principal wrote my name in our school newsletter. It made me so proud.
Our initial goal was just to save for college, but now we think we can do more, she adds.
For them, mining is just the beginning, Ishaan says. The siblings plan to launch their own cryptocurrency later this year called Flifercoin. They've had developers and an attorney help out during the process.
We think there are so many opportunities that involve crypto and we hope to be pioneers in this space, Ishaan says. But I am just a 14-year-old, so my school work and saxophone take priority. Therefore, I am not able to work on my business as much as I would like to.
