Issue Highlights Reviews SectionComparison of time to healing and major complications after surgical fixation of nondisplaced femoral neck stress fractures: A systematic reviewJensen G. Kolaczko, Christopher J. McMellen, Steven J. Magister, Robert J. WetzelDOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.injury.2021.02.046Injury, Vol. 52, Issue 4PreviewFull-Text HTMLPDFxFemoral neck stress fractures are an uncommon injury and account for around 5% of all stress fractures [1]. These fractures are usually seen in active patients undergoing excessive physical activity, such as young military recruits or marathon runners, and in patients with poor bone quality from underlying metabolic abnormality or osteoporosis/osteopenia [2]. The most common symptom is groin pain that worsens with activity and weight bearing [2]. If left untreated this injury can progress to fracture completion, nonunion, malunion, and osteonecrosis from fracture displacement and disruption of the femoral head blood supply [3].ORIF versus MIPO for humeral shaft fractures: a meta-analysis and systematic review of randomized clinical trials and observational studiesFrank JP Beeres, Nadine Diwersi, Marijn R Houwert, Björn C Link, Marilyn Heng, Matthias Knobe, Rolf HH Groenwold, Herman Frima, Reto Babst, Bryan JM van de WallDOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.injury.2020.11.016Injury, Vol. 52, Issue 4PreviewFull-Text HTMLPDFSupplemental MaterialsxThere is a growing interest in minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) in the treatment of humeral shaft fractures [1]. The advantages of MIPO compared to traditional open reduction with plate fixation (ORIF) include less soft tissue damage and preservation of the biological environment of the fracture zone [2]. However, close proximity of neurovascular structures to the humeral bone has raised concerns about the appropriateness of MIPO in this region [3].Hip fracture surgery performed out-of-hours–A systematic review and meta-analysisRaymond G. Kim, Vincent V.G. An, Jeffrey F. PetchellDOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.injury.2021.02.049Injury, Vol. 52, Issue 4PreviewFull-Text HTMLPDFSupplemental MaterialsxHip fractures in the geriatric population are one of the most common orthopaedic hospital presentations, with the number of admissions increasing annually in Australia and worldwide. [1,2] These fragile patients have numerous medical conditions, suffer from increased morbidity and frequently require post-operative institutionalisation, adding significant burden to the health system.
