GRAMEEN KALYAN is a not for profit Company established in 1996 under Bangladesh Companies Act, 1994; founded by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank. It is also registered under Bangladesh Foreign Donation (Voluntary Activities) Regulation Ordinance, 1978. Professor Muhammad Yunus is the Chairman of Grameen Kalyan (GK). The idea behind setting up of Grameen Kalyan (Kalyan means wellbeing) was: (a) to undertake support sustainable programs to improve the livelihood of the people living in rural area; (b) to contribute minimizing socio-economic and health inequalities between rural and urban; and (c) to provide financial support for the wellbeing of Grameen Bank's borrowers, employees and their family members.

The other major task of GK is to serve for the wellbeing of Grameen Bank (GB) borrowers, employees and their family members.  Currently GK is funding for them in following different areas:


Welfare program for Grameen Bank Borrowers:
a. Higher Education Loan
b. Scholarships to meritorious students

Welfare Program for Grameeen Bank Employees:
c. Medical loan
d. Home appliances loan
a. Higher Education Loan:

GK pays interest subsidy for higher education loans provided by GB to the children of its borrowers. Till December 2018, GK provided 2,227.90 million BDT for this purpose. GB calculates 12% interest for this loan of which the students pay only 5%, that starts immediately after the completion of their study.  However, GK pays 12% interest during the period of their study and pays 7% interest after end of their study until the loan is paid back. b. Scholarships to meritorious students:

GK awards scholarships in following categories to the children of GB borrowers' families for their outstanding performances in education, sports culture:

Up to December 2018 GK provided BDT 528.62 million for this scholarship program.  

c. Medical loan:

GK provides interest subsidy for medical loans borrowed by GB employees for themselves/their family members.  Out of 12% imposed interest on this loan, the GB employee pays 5% interest and the rest 7% is paid by GK as subsidy on behalf of the GB employees. Until December 2018, GK has provided BDT 16.56 million subsidy against this loan.

d. Home appliances loan:

GK also pays interest subsidy for home appliances loan borrowed by GB employees. For this loan the GB employee pays 5% interest and on behalf of the employee GK pays additional 7% interest subsidy to GB which continues until the loan is paid back. Till the end of December 2018, GK paid BDT 794.07 million for home appliances loan.

Health Care Programs

Health program is one of the major activities of GK in terms of helping the low income population directly. GK is operating healthcare services through establishing community based health centers in the rural areas. Currently GK is operating 135 health centers in different districts of Bangladesh and covering over 7 million service recipients. Through these health centers, GK is providing primary healthcare services emphasizing on prevention and early detection of communicable non-communicable diseases and in average treats over 7,50,000 patients annually.  GK believes that prevention and early detection of health problem could save both life and money of the poor.   GK introduced micro-health insurance scheme for its beneficiaries to provide healthcare at affordable cost. The healthcare services provided by GK health centers are include outpatient services, outreach satellite camps, free school camps, specialized camps, mobile health services, domiciliary services etc. and follow the functional system of referrals for secondary and tertiary healthcare services. Other than social business Grameen Kalyan gets involved in creating businesses to address the issues like poverty reduction, job creation, and other specific social causes. GK is the shareholder/Investor of the following Grameen companies and till the end of December 2018 it has investment an amount of 889.90 million BDT:
