What is Rescape?ReScape is a nonprofit organization that educates about and advocates for a whole-systems regenerative approach to landscaping that works in harmony with the natural world and addresses the changing environment. Foundational to our work is a whole systems watershed framework that acknowledges that one landscaping input affects the whole ecosystem. All aspects of a healthy community, including of nature communities, must be in coordinated partnership with one another and speak to local geography, as well as regional impact, and rely on management techniques based on sound scientific data, tools, and techniques.ReScape California initially began as the Bay-Friendly Landscaping Gardening Coalition in 2009. The Coalition evolved to become ReScape California in 2015, and grew further when EcoLandscape California merged with ReScape in 2017.ReScape advocates for state and regional policies that encourage and enable positive investments and implementation measures to address the climate emergency. We work with public agencies and municipalities, government entities and communities who hire our 8 Principles professionals trained in ReScape policy-driven landscape standards and practices. Why Regenerative?Over the past few years, conversation began focusing more significantly on how sustainable landscaping should be defined. Sustainable implies keeping the ecosystem stable, the same, where it is right now. What ReScape is doing goes far beyondkeeping things the same.We focus on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, supporting biosequestration, increasing resilience to climate change, and strengthening the health and vitality of the soil.Our whole systems work nurtures resources, rather than destroying them. Leaving them better than before- because that is what our depleted planet needs now and into the future. It inspires a long-term vision, not short-term fixes, that encourages continual science-based innovation for environmental, social, economic and spiritual health and well-being.In the United States, 40 million lawnmowers consume 200 million gallons of gasoline per year. The EPA estimates that the few ounces spilled during each refueling of lawn and other garden equipment — during the summer only — totals 17 million gallons of gasoline nationwide. And energy use means releasing greenhouse gases that are contributing to global warming. Our FocusDiverse Workforce Training ReScape provides professional qualification for individuals, companies and public agency employees who design, install and maintain commercial, civic and residential landscapes. Trained professionals from a range of industry education, cultures, economic levels, ages, genders and experience are essential to revenue generating business success and to address the climate issues we are facing. ReScape creates demand by working with public agencies and municipalities, government entities and communities who hire our 8 Principles professionals trained in ReScape policy-driven landscape standards and practices. Climate EquityLandscapes produce 12% of GHG emissions. Opportunities exist to reduce emissions and increase the potential to sequester carbon from the atmosphere by enhancing sinks. At a time when climate change, coupled with biodiversity loss, provides such a profound, existential planetary emergency, there is an urgent need for the ‘nature-based solutions’ provided by restored landscapes. ReScape’s whole systems thinking acknowledges that earthscaping must include and listen to communities of concern, those lacking access and unequally effected by a warming planet. Advocacy PolicyReScape advocates for state and regional policies, permits, ordinances that encourage and enable implementation of and compliance in regenerative land use. Our policy focus creates the framework for adoption of legislation at governmental and civic levels to implement regenerative principles that address earthscaping climate change issues.
