The purpose of this website is to to provide a research tool for anyone interested in researching their ancestors and the localities where they lived within the area of Ulster covered by Co. Londonderry and North Antrim - read more. See, also, my paper - Some thoughts on researching families and localities. The website is organised through three menus.

The left-hand menu covers the sources that you will need to consult when researching your ancestors or studying a locality. Clicking on the Sources link at the top of the menu will give you some idea of how I see the process of researching ancestors and localities and how this has influenced the way that I have constructed this website. There is also a Further Reading link at the bottom of this page where you will find a bibliography of some books and publications [both hard copy and electronic] relevant to the study of Family and Local History and a list of useful addresses. Note that because there are so many PRONI documents now online I have included a link to PRONI in this menu.

The right-hand menu concentrates on databases that I have created from census substitutes that relate to Co. Londonderry and North Mid Antrim. My databases cover the period c.1630 to c.1860. There are separate links in the menu to those covering, the seventeenth century, the eighteenth century and the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries [1800-1911]. Recently, I have added a new Sperrins link which contains links to databases [in Excel format only] that cover the Sperrins area of Co. Tyrone and parts of Co. Londonderry.

The top menu contains a link to Administrative Divisions where you will find details of the administrative divisions that you need to be aware of when using sources. The Case Studies link will provide some working examples of the process of researching families and localities in North Antrim and Co. Londonderry, particularly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Most of the records on this web site have been sourced from the Public Record Office (PRONI), Belfast and are reproduced with the kind permission of the Deputy Keeper of Records, Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.

Note that, recently, I have revised the database of the 1831 Census Returns for Co. Londonderry.
