COVID-19 Information for Valentine Eastern Sierra ReservesAt the Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserves we are committed to protecting the health and well-being of our researchers, students, staff and local community. We are following the guidance provided by the University of California, the Centers for Disease Control, and the state to limit the spread of this virus. Many of our operations will be temporarily shut down or limited this summer so that we can prevent the spread of this virus. We have cancelled all of our K-12 and public programs this spring and summer including the OSEP summer classes and public tours at Valentine Reserve. USCB is only allowing the reserves to open to limited research use this summer, and we are not allowed to host university classes until further notice.Please see the UCSB NRS COVID-19 Information page for guidance from UCSB and for up-to-date information, as this situation is changing rapidly.We know that these are difficult times for all, and we believe strongly in the healing power of the outdoors. We sincerely look forward to seeing you all back at the reserves when we are able to re-open, and look forward to continuing on our mission of connecting people to nature through science, education and outreach.About the ReservesValentine Eastern Sierra Reserves (VESR) consist of two separate reserves, Valentine Camp and the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL), located approximately eight miles apart. They are situated in Mono County on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, near the Town of Mammoth Lakes, CA. VESR became part of the University of California Natural Reserve System (UCNRS) in 1973 and is administered through the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). VESR provides protected wildlands, on-site experimental facilities, as well as the support facilities for conducting studies of natural systems over a large part of central, eastern California and western Nevada. The Reserve is open, by application, to any bona fide researcher or instructor. We welcome your interest and your inquiries. UCSB Natural Reserve System Fall 2020 Seminar Series From The First Humans To Forest Fires: Scientific Discoveries Spanning UC Santa Barbara’s Seven Spectacular Natural ReservesEvery Thursday evening at 7PM from October 8 to November 19 2020 Valentine Forest Project To address the ever increasing threats of tree mortality and wildfire, and with funding and project support from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the Valentine Camp Reserve is engaged in a fuels reduction project aimed at increasing the health and resilience of the forest and decreasing the risk of fire to not only this important research and education site, but also to the Town of Mammoth Lakes, which surrounds the reserve. Fuels reduction work started in Summer 2020. COVID-19 Information for VESR Due to the COVID situation, UCSB NRS reserves are only open to RESEARCH use.  Please plan ahead, as we cannot accept last minute reservations due to the additional requirements for approval. Each researcher or research group leader needs to submit a COVID safety plan (see step 5 below).  This plan must be approved by the UCSB NRS committee before we can approve your reservation.
