Friday, February 24, 2017 MLE802 (Jan 2017) -- Analyze and evaluate Yasmin Ahmad's film Sepet -- a "cultural adaptation" of Shakespeares original play text Romeo and Juliet. There are two parts to our first e-learning task:

1) Fill up the boxes in a table of comparisons on our Google Doc (see emails/announcements for lthe ink).

The table in Part 1 does not require you to analyze STYLE. Rather, the analysis of stylistic features will be reserved for the exchanges on this discussion forum:

2a) How does the playwright and the director employ various elements of style (e.g., imagery, metaphor, symbol, sound effects, irony) to render his/her story and its themes more moving and compelling?

Remember that the analysis of film involves not only literary concepts of style, but also the dimensions of film criticism. Admittedly, this course (MLE802) does not prepare you for the rigors and subtleties of film criticism; thus, your analysis of Sepet doesn't need to address in depth such elements as mise-en-scene, cinematography (color, lighting, camera angles, depth of field and focus), editing, sound, casting acting. Nonetheless, just try your level best, using whatever knowledge you have, to make sense of the director's filmic artistry.

By performing this close analysis of the two texts, it might be possible to answer the question now raised by the article on "Reducing, translating, and referencing Shakespeare for youth" by Hulbert, Wetmore, York (2006):

b) Is Sepet's attempt at "translating" and "referencing" Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet ultimately a "reduction" of Shakespeare's art?

This blog and the Google Doc will only be closed at the end of the course, so you can share more of your insights as the weeks pass...3 comments: Thursday, March 19, 2015 For MLE802: The last online discussion has moved to this blog!Hey everyone from MLE802: Language, Culture, and Education!

So just for the record, what do you think of Sam Smith's album? (Check out the songs on Youtube if you don't have it on iTunes.) Hope you enjoyed the album as much as I did. If you did or didn't, what would be your critique of it? Do the two music reviews (Review 1; Review 2) reflectsome of theattributes of a literary analysis you yourself would perform on the songs?

Also consider at last the question: How would you incorporate the multimodal analysis of pop songs in your literature classrooms without makingthese exercisesany less changing than regular "practical criticism" on unseen poems and prose passages?4 comments: Wednesday, March 11, 2015 Critical Media Literacy - Analyze this!Dear AAE233 (2015) netizens! Welcome to an old blog for our new online discussion experience!

Week 9 Task: Critically analyze this parody of Taylor Swift's music video You Belong With Me.

What are the explicit and implicit messages in this text?
What kinds of literacies (e.g., media literacy, cultural literacy, social literacy) should audiences possess when viewing this text?
In your view, could/should this media text be used in your English language classroom? Why (not)?11 comments: Friday, September 5, 2014 MLE802 (Aug 2014): Online Discussion 1Compare and analyze two sets of translations reductions (written by your seniors in Dr Whitehead's class) of A Midsummer Night's Dream with respect to the following questions:
a) Which version do you think is superior? Why?
b) What ideas, drawing inspiration from this exercise, do you have for using Singlish to teach Shakespeare in lower secondary, upper secondary, or even junior college classrooms?
Remember to refer also to the original Shakespearean text on which these translated versions are based.12 comments: Tuesday, February 25, 2014 Multimodal Analysis 2
