Please ask the clinical staff member assisting you if you have any questions about where your specimens or tests will be sent.

Depending on the type of lab testing you will be getting done, it may be necessary for you to plan ahead to ensure that you are able to fast if necessary. Fasting for the purpose of a lab draw means that you do not eat or drink anything but water 12 hours prior to your blood draw. If you have concerns about this restriction please discuss in further detail with your healthcare provider.

Our Providers

Dr. Adkins has been providing family medicine with obstetric care since 2004. He was chief resident in South Bend, Indiana and has additional training in Cesarean deliveries, colonoscopies, vasectomies, and skin surgery.

He was recognized as an outstanding upcoming family physician by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

He has a Master’s Degree in Health Systems Administration from Indiana University, serves with the American Board of Family Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He teaches medical students from the University of Washington.

Dr. Adkins enjoys teaching patients how to improve health through lifestyle so they can avoid seeing him in the office.

Philosophy of Care:

I believe that caring for the person as a whole is an important aspect of medicine.

Our bodies are very interconnected and when something goes wrong with one part, it can affect the whole. It is important to me to provide quality medical care to my community and to be an advocate for my patients and their health.

Personal Interests:

My partner, Madeleine, and I moved from central Texas to Pullman, excited that we could spend more time hiking, skiing, camping, and exploring the PNW. We brought along our two cats and adopted a pup who loves going on adventures with us. I also enjoy playing the guitar, listening to music, relaxing at home, and traveling the world.

Why did you decide to become a Family Medicine MD:

I was initially torn between Family Medicine and 0B/GYN. I loved being able to assist moms in the process of childbirth, but I also loved getting to watch the kids grow up, treat the parents and grandparents, and overall get to have my hands in all the different medical fields. I ultimately chose Family Medicine, but also completed extra training in Obstetrics so I could get the best of both worlds.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I understand the hurdles and barriers that can arise for receiving care in the medical field. My goal is to be as personable and supportive as possible to help my patients meet their health journey goals. Whether it's providing resources, referrals for surgeries and therapy, or just lending a compassionate listening ear, I strive to be there for each and every one of my patients.

Additional information:

I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a physician, so I completed my undergraduate in Biomedical Sciences at Texas AM University and then went straight into medical school at Texas AM as well. I trained at Texas AM Family Medicine Residency in Bryan, TX. I participated in the Advanced Obstetrics track, where I received my training in deliveries and cesarean sections. I am board certified in Family Medicine and have privileges to work at Pullman Regional Hospital.

Philosophy of care:

It is a privilege to work with people on a personal level. I see my role as part of the medical team and to provide patients the support and guidance that is required in order to lead a healthy lifestyle and work towards their personal goals.

Personal Interests:

A role that has brought me joy and fulfillment like no other is being a mother of two teenagers (Cassie and Sam). They certainly keep my husband, Bill and I busy with their personal interests. We have a rich life here on the Palouse with adventures in the mountains, rivers and spending time with our dear friends and family. In the summer, you are likely to see me working in the yard where I am a novice gardener.

Why did you decide to become a Family Medicine PA-C:

I wouldn't work in any other field. I love working with people of all ages. It is gratifying to me to see young families and work by their side as that precious baby turns their world upside down! Those babies evolve into teenagers and then adults. I also truly enjoy working with a population whom has arrived at the other end of the spectrum of life. Each of these stages are filled with invaluable lessons and it is gratifying to be a part of these stages with our patients.

Additional information:

My path to become a PA was a windy one, but has helped to transform who I am now.

attended Drury College in Springfield, MO where I obtained my BA in psychology. After working in a court mandated drug rehabilitation facility for teenagers in Chicago, I decided to make a significant switch to physical therapy. I then pursued a degree as a physical therapist assistant and worked in this realm first in Chicago and then on the Palouse for a total of 13 (?) years.

After starting my family, I decided it was time to go back to school again and this time obtained a MA degree in Physician Assistant at the University of Washington. This field has provided all that I have been searching for: working with people in a very close relationship, making a difference and will continue to challenge me every day.

Philosophy of care:

Everyone has a fundamental right to health care and, in partnership with their physician, they should have the opportunity to play an active role in their own care. My goal is to provide guidance, advice, and treatment based on current medical evidence, and to help my patients attain and maintain the best possible state of health. I believe that a long-term relationship with a trusted physician, one who has come to know each person's history, values, and goals is the key to excellent health care. It is truly a privilege to build these long-term relationships with families, to share in their joys and sorrows, and to be a trusted source of medical care and guidance over time.

Why did you decide to become a Family Medicine physician?

In medical school, I believed I was best suited to the field of OB/GYN, because I loved providing pregnancy care and delivering babies. However, I realized that I missed following the babies I delivered and wondered how those mothers and fathers were handling parenthood. I wanted to see those babies grow to become toddlers and teenagers, while providing guidance to their parents during those demanding and joyous years. I could do all of that in Family Medicine, and I could treat diabetes, heart disease, asthma, skin cancer, infections, mental health problems --you name it. I chose a residency program that offered excellent training in obstetrics as well as broad-spectrum family medicine, moved from the east coast to the west, and have been practicing in Washington (except for 3 years in Idaho) ever since! After 20 years, I still find it challenging and energizing to be a family doctor.

Personal Interests:

I love the Northwest for it tremendous access to outdoor activities. I enjoy hiking, biking, backpacking, rafting, and international travel. I also enjoy curling up with a good book, drinking coffee with friends, and watching movies. I am married and have two teenage girls. (Note: I both provide and readily accept any tips on raising teenagers!)

Education Experience:

Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, B.A. in Sociology and English University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Doctor of Medicine Tacoma Family Medicine Residency Program, Rural Training Track Fellow of the American Academy of Family PhysiciansMedical director of Pullman Family MedicineChair of the Network Operations Council of Pullman Regional Hospital Clinic Network (PRHCN) Active medical staff member at Pullman Regional HospitalBoard-certified in Family Medicine

Philosophy of Care:

As PA-C's, the foundation of our practice is treating patients as more than individual symptoms. We view care as an entire connected system; mental, physical, and emotional states all matter. My goal has always been to be an empathetic and understanding provider. I want to know about you, not just to address chronic and acute conditions, but to create a working relationship that facilitates better health outcomes so you can continue to enjoy life to the fullest.

Why Family Medicine PA-C:

I chose Family Medicine because I want to help people lead healthy productive lives regardless of age, gender, or ailment. Our bodies are continuously changing throughout our lives. From prenatal development to advanced years, I have always wanted to be part of that change, helping in preventative care, routine checkups, and diagnosing illnesses and issues.

Personal Interests:

My partner, our Great Pyrenees, and I are avid outdoor explorers in all seasons. We spend our time together hiking, backpacking, skiing (backcountry, alpine, and nordic), biking, kayaking, fishing, hunting, foraging, and gardening. If I am not in the clinic, odds are I am out-of-doors enjoying nature.

Education:

Undergraduate: Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, Ml

Physician Assistant Graduate Program: Heritage University, Toppenish, WA

Organizations: American Academy of Physician Assistants, Washington Academy of Physician Assistants

Certification: National Commission On Certification Of Physician Assistants

Philosophy of Care:

I believe in patient-centered care. My job is to provide the patient with information and recommendations to help guide them in decisions regarding their healthcare. My main goal is to keep my patients as healthy as possible in ways that make sense for each individual.

Personal Interests:

I love being outdoors and enjoy pretty much every outdoor sport. Being outdoors also allows me to dabble in photography, which is one of my favorite hobbies. I take advantage of every opportunity I can to bake and love learning to cook new dishes. I love music and have been working on my eclectic record collection.

Why did you decide to become a Family Medicine MD:

I initially started working in research. I have always enjoyed science, but I found myself wanting to be more directly involved in the lives of the people I was trying to help. Family medicine provided an opportunity to help others and become a part of their lives in a unique way.

Additional Information:

After completing my undergraduate degree, I pursued a master's degree in microbiology and immunology. I worked in cancer research before starting my medical degree.
