Description:

WELCOME AP EUROPEAN HISTORY and WORLD HISTORY Students to MR. FREEBIRD'S HISTORY VILLAGE! Welcome WILLIAMS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS and PARENTS! I am very blessed that the road led me through Grimsley High School, in Greensboro, NC, hand in hand, we SLAYED dragons together. Many of the pictures on this website represent the adventures that we shared together over the years that I taught at Grimsley. I will always reserve a special place for all Whirlies and our time together. But I am honored that the Journey's End has brought me to my SHIRE, Walter M. Williams High School, in Burlington, NC.I am proud to continue my professional career teaching your sons and daughters and I hope that the shared experience we have inside and outside of the classroom is meaningful and purpose enlightening. Teaching is my passion and I engage my students on a daily basis in this love affair I have with history and philosophy, and the Human Experience .I will do my best to share the answers we collectively compile to the greatest question- WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE HUMAN? Thank-you for your trust, your confidence, and your support on our journey.FREEBIRD MCKINNEY Walter M. EVERYTHING BEGINS WITH BIOGRAPHYFirst of all, in getting to know me, you need to know that I am fulfilling my ENTELECHY, on a daily basis. I was literally, figuratively, and metaphorically, BORN TO BE A TEACHER! It is my calling, my destiny, and my purpose, and apart from being a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a friend, and a HUMAN BEING, I take no other aspect of my life more seriously. I truly am a historian, a literary fanatic and a philosopher at heart, and I passionately engage in the pursuit of knowledge and the acquisition of wisdom as I draw in every waking breath. The impetus for this tireless journey lies in my dedication to the profession of education and to each and every one of my student's self-realization and self-actualization. Why do we let them wash it away? Why are we allowing them to take what's good? Why don't we teach our children what is real? Why don't we collect and save what is real?Look very hard and swim the ocean,We must find what needs to be found.Look all around and find a wise man,Feed us the truth and keep us sound. All of us must swim the seas'Cause our path's been washed away. All of us must swim the seas,'Cause our path's been washed away. My one purpose is to swim the seas.Find the truth and spread it around.Give it to the children that know how to listen,So they can pass it on after I drown . . . Arrested Development (A more in-depth biography, including a resume and up-to-date VITA, can be found in the Biography section of the website.)II. TEACHING PHILOSOPHYI am very much looking forward to working with each of you as we embark on this challenging journey through the AP European History, AP World World History, American History, or IB Philosophy curriculum! I consider it the utmost professional honor to be a member of the Williams High School staff and apart of the Social Studies Department. This being said, my intent is to challenge each of you to work harder than ever thought possible, but to do it in a way that is fun, engaging, and ultimately educationally and intellectually rewarding. I am extremely passionate about HISTORY, LITERATURE, and PHILOSOPHY and about TEACHING! My definition for success lies in the amount of knowledge each of you gain, and how your life has changed once this knowledge is synthesized, not necessarily in the grade achieved. WILLIAMS HIGH SCHOOL WEBSITEWe will be meeting five days a week for 1 hour and 30 minutes each day. My approach can best be described as a blend of traditional and non-traditional classroom methods. There will be daily PowerPoint presentations and lectures, which will be viewed at home, and then we will engage in class discussions using the Socratic Method. I will also use music, DVD's, You Tube clips, and other medium presentations, on a daily basis, but I am very committed to student-driven discussions, small group cooperative learning, project-based assessments, and the integration of modern technology to an academic curriculum that is centuries old. I promise it will not be a class where you simply listen to me talk for an hour and thirty minutes every day while you take notes. YOU WILL BE ENGAGED!I am living a dream! To this end, I pledge to make myself available to any student seeking additional help. I will be available from 3:25 4:30pm after school each day, but I am also available any other time, so long as I have 1-2 days advance notice. III. USING THIS WEBSITEThis website has been designed to be used both as a virtual teacher and as a tool for your continued academic success at Williams High School. Classes will use this website as your syllabus, your assignment guide, your calendar, your data storage, and your virtual classroom . As we work through the dynamics of the website, you will learn to become accustomed to its many possibilities and to its many resources which will aid you in your preparation for your respective end-of-course tests. I believe that while I enjoy being a pathfinder, I also embrace the reality that there have been many individuals who have walked the Path before me. So rather than recreating the wheel, I have begged, borrowed, and stolen much of what you will see on this website and then have created my own version by synthesizing what our class will utilize. Personally, I would like to thank my mentor, Larry Treadwell of Bishop Verot High School, as well as, Mr. Oberacker of Los Amigos High School, and Susan Pojer of Horace Greeley High School. They have all been instrumental in the construction of my website!GOOD-LUCK!
