Monday, October 31, 2011 Another town in Tuscany from the 1300's. Still in good shape since the Black Plague killed almost everyone and the city was abandoned. Stopped and toured a winery and saw olive getting pressed and oil coming out! Kind of like cider........apples in, cider out!

Think I'll leave Jerry! He can haul those crates of olives!

This is Villa Lecchi where we have spent the last 4 nights. Wonderful place, family run and fresh food from the garden. Mama cooks in the kitchen (she's only 72) daughter Laura runs the place, and all the other family members help in one way or another. Checked out the garden and chickens this morning. Had fresh leek and mushroom soup for dinner. Off to Venice! No comments: Sunday, October 30, 2011
Spent the day in Florence. David was wonderful.....what a hunk! Unfortunately, no pictures allowed! Saw more beautiful churches and ate more Italian pizza. Walked miles......have to keep my pants at least zipped, if not fastened!1 comment: Don't we look Italian in our scarfs!! We spent the day in Siena. Beautiful city from the 1500's. We climbed the bell tower. 500 steps up and 500 steps down! Even managed to walk to the bus without help!

No comments: Friday, October 28, 2011 Next headed toUmbriaand the mountain top town of Todi. What a view!!
Found a little bench with a slant to enjoy a little Gelato...........well, maybe a lot of Gelato! Now to Tuscany.1 comment: Finally got internet service again! Rome was unreal. Coliseum had been flooded with 15 feet of water from a rain storm several days before we got there, but we lucked out and they opened it the morning we were to tour it.
You can see the size compared to the little people. Originally, there had been a statue of Augustus by the front that was almost as tall as the building. It was torn down and melted to use for weapons.
Old bridge over the Tiber River. We walked all over Rome for several days. Went to the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, and put 3 coins in the fountain!!No comments: Friday, October 21, 2011 We visited Pompeii today. Started out with a little rain and then it cleared up and was a beautiful day. Pompeii is an amazing place, we had a tour guide that was born in Pompeii and was very entertaining and informative. His father was an archeologist on the site for years. You have to read your own source for info on Pompeii as there is just too much to talk about here. The bottom photo is of one of the bodies that was found when they excavated. It is actually a plaster cast of the hollow space that left after the body disintigrated.Off to Rome tomorrow.

No comments: Thursday, October 20, 2011 Toured Amalfi today. Sherrir Mick Winn walked to the top of the hill with us to a beautiful garden area. Walked by the Villa Rovello in Rovello where Richard Wagner completed one if his works that I can't remember the name of!
Villa Rovella1 comment: Wednesday, October 19, 2011 Managed to hook up with the tour today and had our first bus ride..........and what a ride it was. Had to stop several times to position so that we could pass another bus! The Amalfi Coast is beautiful. We are staying at this hotel for 3 nights.......even get to unpack! Supposed to rain tomorrow. Hope the Gods are with us and the sunshine stays. Limoncello tonight, mmmmmmm! 1 comment: Tuesday, October 18, 2011 That's how you deliver wine in Italy! No messing around with bottles! Looked at more ruins that were over 2000 years old today. Drove to our hotel with a little side trip.........only 30 miles out of the way! Not near as bad as that screw up in Texas years ago. Hey, it's had when the only map you have has a whole country on it. If we hadn't taken that detour, wouldn't have seen this gentleman taking a break! All the men dress here.......even the old ones! If not a suit, at least a sweater over the shoulders. I'm going to have to work at getting Jerry to look the part! Tomorrow on to the Naples Airport to meet the rest of the tour.
No comments: Sunday, October 16, 2011 Only Jerry would find an Italian cat in need of a scratch! Stopped in Spoleto today and looked at Roman Ruinsfrom the first century BC. Boy, they don't build 'em like that anymore! They still live and work in this town with roots back to the 6th century BC. Thnk they have had more than one or two Centennial celebrations. We walked through the main arch that people having been waking through for over 2000 years.Kind of puts things in perspective! More pizza for dinner!

2 comments: Saturday, October 15, 2011 Clothes hanging out of a building over 600 years old. Does that mean I am a littled dated??? Not nearly as practical as my Amish line, but does the job! Drove through more of Tuscany and ended up in Gubbio. Has just a little history. They found bronze tablets that dated back to the beginning of Christianity and were discovered in the 15th century. They are written in the Umbrian language. Toured the Palazzo dei Consoli and the Duomo there. Another Italian meal. 2# today!

No comments: Friday, October 14, 2011 A little windy on the Plazza overlooking Florence. the Duomo is in the background with the red roof.

Stopped in Fiesole, just north of Florence to look at some Etruscan ruins. They were here about 600 years before the Romans! Drove on into Tuscany. Beautiful vineyards and fields of all sorts of vegetables. Stopped at an old castle, from 900 A.D. Climbed the bell tower. What a view! We are staying 2 nights at this hotel and then will head South.
No comments: Thursday, October 13, 2011 Found an interesting road today. Managed to go over this spot twice.........one on the way to getting lost, and once on the way back! Did manage to make it to Florence. Don't know which is worse........ the city traffic or rural roads!

Walked all over Florence. Crossed the Arno River on the old bridge that now houses a ton of gold and jewelry shops. Met the daughter of a friend who is studying in Florence for a semester. Delivered a care package and a hug from her Mom. More great pizza.....with a Carlsberg! Out of the city and back to the country tomorrow. Hopefully, with better roads. No comments: Wednesday, October 12, 2011 Took the scenic route to the hotel today. What a drive! The view was beautiful. Finally found our hotel and the homemade tortellini was unreal! No comments: Tuesday, October 11, 2011 Had pizza and local red wine last night. Great first Italian meal! Can't wait for tonight! Yes, we ate the whole thing! I'm going to spend November letting our pants out!

No comments: Tuesday evening about 5 pm..........8 am where most of you are. Got to Venice about 1:30, (yes, we had to get off in the middle of the runway in Frankfurt to change planes to go to Venice. Seems they are a little short on gates in Frankfurt!) picked up the rental car and drove about an hour to Bassano del Grappa, NW of Venice. Have to admit, we did stop to get our first gelato. YMMMMMM! The view is from our balcony. We have been up for about 30 hours. Think we will eat early and hit the sack. Now, if we can sleep all night instead of a wake up call about 3 am!!!! We'll do a little exploring here tomorrow and try to head for Bologna. Till then, ciao!

No comments: Monday, October 10, 2011 Arrived in Denver by 8 am. 3 am was really early. Now to wait 6 hours for our next leg to Chicago. Note the new travel clothes! Will let you know when we get to Italy. No comments: Monday, August 22, 2011 Attended Abby Evans' wedding over the weekend in Flagstaff. We had a great time and the wedding went off without a hitch. Lots of friends and met many new people. Abby is the youngest of three of our friends from long ago. Anneka and Lauren both were able to attend with us, so we had a mini family weekend also out of the deal. No comments: Sunday, August 14, 2011 We're going to revive our blog with a recent bike trip to the Catwalks in New Mexico. Maybe we will back up and update some of our other recent travels. But first the most recent. Our mototcycle groupl, the White Mountain chapter of the Star Touring Motorcycle riding association, went on a ride to the Glenwood, NM on Sat. there were only five bikes on this ride, plus one bunch in a car following ( with kids). It was about a 300 mile ride in the mountains and turned out to be a beautiful day. The weather forecast called for 70% change of flash floods, but we made it home with only a few drops of rains. Barely enough to even cool it down.
The Catwalks is really a single trail hung on the side of a cliff winding up a creek in Western NM. Originally it was to slurry ore down stream to a mill. But it the 60's the forest service revamped it and hung a metal walk way on sides of the cliff. It goes up the stream for about 1.1 mile on this catwalk on the side of the cliffs. Past that point the adventurous can hike another 15 miles into a wilderness area. We didn't go that far because we wanted to beat the rain and headed for home.No comments: Thursday, October 08, 2009 Yep, same people, same clothes! Waiting at the Brussels airport. Had a 1:00 pm flight, but we got there at 9:00......needless to say, we had plenty of time.....to have another waffle! Did our allnighter and got into Phoenix at 8:30 pm (5:30 am Belgium time!) Anneka picked us up and delivered us to her house. Izzy was glad to see us! Stopped over to see Lauren and Kyle for a few minutes and headed home. Boy, did our own bed feel good last night! Now, to get caught up and do something with all these pictures!

No comments: They do train stations up right in Antwerp! Even had trains coming in on 3 different levels. Was rainy all day, so we got a little soggy. But one day out of 28 wasn't bad.

Jerry thought it was so neat, he had to have a picture. Didn't get to far from the train as I had already boarded. A little gunshy from our train escapade from earlier!

They do like their fancy city halls in Europe. This one was built the the 1500's. Had another cup of Belgian hot chocolate at a little cafe on the Plaza---even ate outside----they do provide heaters and lap blankets. There must have benn 100 diamond shops in Antwerp. 80% of the diamonds in the world are cut in Antwerp.
No comments: Monday, October 05, 2009 No pictures today. Forgot to put the disk in the camerasoall the pictures from Antwerp are on the internal memeory of the camera. Will have to add pictures when we get home. Did take the train to Antwerp----kind of. We got the the train platform and a train was there--about 10 minutes early, so...........Jerry hopped on the train to check it out, and it left........................with me standing on the platform! We did like we taught the kids. I stayed there, he got to the next stop, go off and took the next train back! Guess the train was 1/2 hour late, so things were all screwed up! Did make it to Antwerp and went on a tour of the diamond cutting area. Got to see one of the5 bestguys in the world cutting a diamond. No baubles for me.....we ate too many waffles today! Got back to the hotel and are just about finished packing. Still in 2 bags, they are just heavier than when we left. Off to the airport in the morning. See you all soon!No comments: Sunday, October 04, 2009 So I guess they do church differently in Belgium---they get a marching band to spice things up! A whole band was playing in front of the church, just happpened to see them as we drove by. We were off early this morning to see a WWII cemetary in the Netherlands, and one in Belgium. Looked strange to see the American Flag flying across
the Dutch sky. This was taken at the National Cemetary in Margraten. There are 8,301 headstones plus names of 1,722 mising.

Next we drove into Belgium to the cemetary at Henri-Chapelle. There are 7,992 headstones with names of an additional 452 missing carved in marble. The grounds were beautifully maintained. The surrounding countryside is like something out of a fairly tale. Hard to believe 65 years ago there was a war on this very soil.

After we did the cemetaries, Lola took us down the
garden path---well not exactly!! Did finally end up
at Chateau de Jehay. It has a moat! Grounds were

gorgeous. Have to go home and garden! After
looking for a gas station by our hotel for an hour,
we gave up and came home. Off to Antwerp
tomorrow. Then, we really do have to pack!

Just happened to wander into a cathedral in Brussels and the choir was practicing for a wedding thia morning. Anneka, we taped some of it for you. they were really good! Church was built in 1226. They rennovated it in 1983 and found the foundation of the original church from the early 12th century. We went in the crypt and took pictures, it was really neat!

Woulnd't you know, about noon we hear a bunch of honking--here come the bride and grrom followed by a bunch of honking cars---just like a good old Iowa wedding!

This is Manneken-Pis. He is Brussle's favorite little boy, doing what little boys do. He has been around since at least 1419. There are several theories about him, from putting out a bomb with the handiest thing, to letting go on a Spanish sentry under his window-----regardless, he ahs over 800 costumes that have been donated. we saw them in the museum. His outfits are changed daily. Today he was a drum major!

Of course, what else would the United States send but ELVIS!

Flowers everywhere......no frost here yet! Buildings are unbelievable. Have had more than our share of waffles.......with chocolate.....with strawberries......with white chocolate.....with powered sugar............... mmmmmm. I'm sure we will find some more tomorrow. It is 7 and we are back at the hotel. Shoes off and watching a little CNN!No comments: Older PostsHomeSubscribe to:Posts (Atom)FollowersBlog Archive 2011(19) October(17)Another town in Tuscany from the 1300s.
