Welcome to the Talisman Music website, featuring musician and teacher Carl Thor, the Celtinalia harp/dulcimer duo, contra dance bands Hands4/Stepwise, Bandwidth, and Cascade Crossing, as well as the Celtic group Talisman. Find a variety of products in our web store, and information about our teaching, sound engineering and composition services, as well as events we are promoting. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly everything on our performance calendar has been cancelled for the last two years. But although we haven't been performing, we have not been idle during this time. See below for some new ways to engage with our music. Watch here for updates. Please take care of yourselves and each other — physically and psychologically — and we'll see you on the other side of this difficult time.

Online music lessons: I am conducting hammered dulcimer and piano lessons remotely over the internet, using the Zoom video conferencing platform. In this new environment, there is zero risk of infection, and geography is not a limiting factor! If you would like to begin lessons, please get in touch. BandCamp: Did you know that musicians only earn a fraction of a cent when you listen to their music through a streaming service like Spotify? Even if you buy a download through a service like Apple Music, only a small part of the sale trickles down to the artist. But there is a better way for you to support us and the other musicians you love! We are now on BandCamp, a site where you can purchase downloads and physical recordings (streaming comes along with your purchase), and the artist receives about 80% of your payment! We'll be adding more of our music over time, so keep an eye on our BandCamp site.

The CDBaby Store for purchasing physical CDs and digital downloads has shut down, and we're in the process of adjusting to that loss. You may still find some dead-end links to the CDBaby store throughout this website, but we'll be correcting those as we continue our migration to BandCamp.

I offer private lessons on hammered dulcimer and piano in Portland or Vancouver, and occasional dulcimer workshops in Portland and the Willamette Valley. ALL TEACHING IS CURRENTLY REMOTE, OVER ZOOM, due to COVID. See Lessons or Contact us for more info.

Dance

Contra dance in Vancouver, WA, at Contra in the Couve!, held on the second Friday of every month at the Hazel Dell Grange, 7509 NE Hazel Dell Ave. This fine, roomy dance hall has a great wood dance floor and an easy-to-access location just a few blocks from I-5.
Come dance with us in Vancouver! Lesson at 7:30pm, dance at 8:00pm.
ALL DANCES ARE CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Special note for Portland contra dancers: Contra in the Couve is just 4 freeway miles from the Interstate Bridge, and no passport or security check is required for entry into Washington state!

Spring Dulcimer Rendezvous

The 2020 and 2021 Hammered Dulcimer Rendezvous events were cancelled. A small in-person band camp was held in August of 2021.
Registration is now open for a scaled back 2022 Rendezvous, scheduled for May 19-22 with visiting instructors Karen Alley and Mark Alan Wade. Visit nwdulcimer.com for more information.
