GLUON ROLLUPS

Gluon is a purpose built sidechain which is designed to avoid the drawbacks of Ethereum – Congestion and Gas – and the issues of UTXO based plasma sidechains. Gluon which utilizes rollups in a novel fashion originally was designed for high-speed trading without custodial risks. Gluon creates efficient, small rollups (using Merkel Root) to utilize the fundamental security advantages of the Ethereum main chain.

KEY ADVANTAGES

The development of the Gluon Rollups Layer2 directly resulted from the foreseen scalability issues of plasma sidechains with UTXO models, especially for exchanges. It is an alternative approach to some other Layer2 models such as ZK Rollups and Optimistic Rollups. ZK Rollups generate a SNARK Proof which causes issues as it takes additional compute resources and creates a larger footprint on-chain, creating scalability issues as the state grows linearly. Optimistic Rollups, suffers from limited throughput and a withdrawal delay of 7 days. Gluon, however, overcomes these issues while also having the key benefit of full knowledge transparency and an explorer to give full certainty of the correctness of the Layer2 state.

Gluon Rollups benefits over UTXO based Plasma Sidechains which suffer from some drawbacks especially for an exchange.

WITNESS BAGGAGE

The utilization of the main-chain for transactions such as deposits causes witness baggage. This is an over reliance on the main-chain for confirmation which can create large transactions.

MASS EXODUS

If a large number of users want to exit the chain a large amount of UTXOs become overwhelming and due to unpredictable congestion and fees could cause the plasma sidechain to fail integrity checks.

UTXO SHREDDING

Outputs have the tendency to be fragmented to the smallest possible size, causing issues with scalability and the natural outcome of time priority.

DECENTRALIZED TRANSPARENCY

Gluon Rollups generate G-blocks or Gluon Blocks as an ordered Merkel root on the Ethereum mainchain, for proof of validity of chain state. This includes all current balances and asset pairs. The Merkel root reduces the footprint, cost and speed of confirmation over larger unnecessary transactions. The Gluon state has a real-time explorer to track any activity. In brief, security is maintained by every participant having sufficient data to prove correctness of any new entry and a link to prior entry. Validity can be proven by tracing all the way back to the origin just like a UTXO system. Since such a lookback would be impractical changes are validated in real time to maintain efficiency.

A contract upgrade on Gluon can happen without individual users having to interact with a new contract deployed and any user data is migrated seamlessly. This could be a critical piece of code needed in a timely manner, or a proposed upgrade. This is also related to the comprehensive Gluon fraud proofs that can inform of any need to halt, or take action.

One of the most crucial design decisions for Gluon was addressing every type of feasible type of fraud while maintaining sufficient decentralization and scalability. You can learn more about these necessary fraud mechanisms in the Gluon White Paper.
