More About

The BIA-NKY Enzweiler Building Institute (EBI) is the longest running and one of the largest post-secondary training programs under the auspices of the National Association of Home Builders. The Program began in 1967 and continues to provide a well-trained workforce for the local construction industry. Many of our region’s most successful construction businesses are owned and operated by EBI graduates.

EBI operates on an apprenticeship model. Students work in the field during the day and take classes at night. Programs in Carpentry, Diesel Mechanics, Electricity, Facilities Maintenance & Remodeling, Heating & Air Conditioning, Masonry, Plumbing, and Welding are taught by professional trades people each September through April. Students are in class two nights per week for three hours each night. Emphasis is placed on preparing you to succeed in your field, now and well into your future.

Programs Available

Carpentry Program

EBI’s oldest program, carpentry is a two-year curriculum. Assignments are updated annually to address the needs of today’s construction employers. Often, assignments are completed in conjunction with local non-profit organizations to provide students with actual time in the field to further hone their skills.

Rough Carpentry

Focuses on developing the basis skills needed for excellence on the job. Content covers safety, blueprint reading, math for construction and construction terminology. Students master skills through hand-son practice under the direction of a seasoned carpenter.

Finish Carpentry

Hones the basic skills and advances students’ knowledge and precision. Through hands-on assignments, students complete higher-level tasks that enable them to master their craft.

Electric Program

Electric is a licensed profession that requires candidates to train under a master electrician before being eligible to sit for licensure. EBI’s Electric Program is approved by the State of Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction as a licensure education program. The program is a four-year approach thoroughly covering the practice of electric in residential, commercial and industrial settings.

The curriculum is 100% centered on professional practice as electricians and is heavily rooted in teaching the electric code. Classroom discussions and activities help students understand relevant theories and how they apply on the job.

Heating, Ventilation,

HVAC Program prepares students to work as licensed field technicians and installers. The curriculum is continually revised to satisfy today’s workforce needs and to prepare students for the International Code Council (ICC) Journeyman Technicians Exam. The program blends hands-on application on a variety of furnace and air conditioning units as well as designing ventilation systems with classroom time focused on the topics necessary for the examination. Students are also prepared to complete EPA 608 examinations.

Students can select either part-time or full-time enrollment. Part-time students attend class two nights per week from 6 to 9 p.m. for two years. Full-time students attend class four nights per week from 6 to 9 p.m. and complete their required 288 hours of classroom time in one academic year. The full-time approach enables students to take their journeyman examination with one year of work experience in the HVAC field.
